US vs. Mexico Highlights
   August 15, 2012 (7:47 PM) by Matt

Here are the full highlights.

Michael Orozco Fiscal becomes only the fifth US player to score against Mexico at Azteca.  The US wins its first game ever against Mexico on Mexican soil (now 1-23-1).  And Mexico loses only its ninth game ever at Azteca in 120 total games (now 79-9-32).

And this photo is awesome.

I told people that Shea was going to have a good game!

    Good historic win!

But Torres needs to be shelved, and I am also not convinced with Jones as well.

Torres is supposed to be a our possession guy, but this is just another game where he has shown that he is just not up to snuff at the international level. it’s time bring in other players.

  2. 2tone says:

If Holden is back playign well then I see him slotting right into where Torres is playing.

  3. Tyrese says:

AMERICA! Great win before qualifying next month. Donovan should never be played as a striker he’s not good at it. Our midfield was trash today without Bradley. What about feilhaber in mid?

  4. Trent Hill says:

Bradley was needed for sure, as was Dempsey. I agree Donovan should be in the midfield in an advanced role.

    I thought Jones wasn’t bad.

How about Edu-Cameron eh? That worked pretty well.

  5. Trent Hill says:

And we were missing Altidore, Bradley, Dempsey, Boca, and Donovan for half–that’s a big win to be missing so many.

Does anyone know how many regular starters Mexico was missing?

  6. Matt says:

hey people you know we won right?

  7. Daniil says:

Mexico’s roster was slightly more normal than ours. They also gave some new guys a shot, although had fewer players on the squad as fillers

Hammy tightness or not, donovan’s play was mediocre at best, he’s not an automatic starter for us in 2014

And if jones continues to give up perilous free kicks and do little to move the ball… were not exactly short on centre-mids. He really needs to step it up, for me.

  8. Ian says:

    Yeehaw!

  9. 2tone says:

That was prettyy much Mexico’s starting 11. missing Salcido, and Gio.

  10. Gregory says:

Lets give credit to JK for starting 7 CDM/LB and getting the win.

The starting lineup was still pretty much an “overthere”/ “south of the border” line-up.

D.Williams at RM needs to get a little credit, haha that’s a win over Italy and Mexico. It looks ugly, but theirs something about it.

  11. 2tone says:

Here is my attempt at who Klinsmann will select for the jamaica qualifiers.

With another dissapointing showing from Torres I get a feeling Klinsmann is going to drop him. Klinsmann specifically stated that Torres needed to have a good game last night, and then he went and laid another egg.

Here is my 22 man roster against Jamaica.

    GK: Howard, Guzan, Rimando
Defense: Johnson, Dolo, Castillo, Cam, Edu, Boca, Ream
Middies: Bradley, Jones, Williams, Beckerman, Corona, Pontius
Attackers: Donovan, Shea, Dempsey, Gomez, Altidore, Boyd

  12. 2tone says:

Here is the problem though. Dempsey is not in Jol’s plans to play for Fulham, and he continues to really get nothing going for a transfer. Will Dempsey be fit for the USMNT.

    starting 11.

    4-2-3-1

    ——————Howard————
    Dolo——Cam————-Boca———johnson
    ———–Beckerman——Bradley————–
    Donvoan————-Dempsey————Pontius
    ——————Altidore———————

  13. 2tone says:

Heres is another question. Everyone is watching Donovan basically age not physically, but psychologically before our eyes. Is Donovan a detriment to the USMNT as a starter? Would he be better served as a sub going forward?

These are things that klinsmann needs to figure out. For me Donovan has not been good enough the past few outings with the USMNT.

  14. Jaime says:

I agree 100% with you 2tone, Donovan is a shadow of what he used to be and the same is true for Oguchi.. I would love to se GATT and Gyau take Donovan spot as a starter. I hope JK invites these guys for our game against Jamaica..

  15. 2tone says:

well with Liverpools signing of the Morrocon Addias I think that his is name; it’s lokking hihgly unlikely Dmpsey is goign to Liverpool. He either needs to stay at Fulham, or possibly go to Everton. It’s not looking good for Dempsey right now.

  16. Daniil says:

Arsenal could target dempsey having just stacked em up by selling rvp

arsene wegner has said before he’s a fan of dempsey. I think dempsey really just wants to play champions league ball, so if the gunners don’t go after him he’ll probably play out his contract with fulham

  17. Dirk says:

A lot of Donovan bashing going on here. Does anyone even watch him play with the Galaxy? They crushed Chivas the other night, Donovan was the best player on the pitch, he had a career high 4 assists. He was brilliant. This was Saturday. Now why was he poor against Mexico? Because the whole team stunk. What the hell is Donovan supposed to do with the combined creative talents of Kyle Beckerman, D.Williams, J.L. Torres and J. Jones in the midfield? Beckerman is tragically slow at this level, Williams is a DM playing out of position on the right, Torres is a deep lying passer playing, once again, OUT OF POSITION behind the strikers, and Jermaine Jones didn’t hit one decent thru ball all night long when he wasn’t making poor tackles just outside the box. What was the difference in Donovan between Saturday and Wednesday? Donovan was playing with creative players like Robbie Keane and Juninho who know what position to be in and when to be there. Watch the highlights. Anyone who says Donovan has lost his edge or is not a USA first teamer is clueless about what is actually going on. Here is the link.

  18. Piaggio says:

this game really pumped up! so much that I took some time off work to make this:

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AsUfFTsh63PgdEhHanFVVjJQM2ZHNktyTWtQbkFpVXc

It’s sort of a depth chart with all the players that could be part of the World Cup Squad (if the US makes it, knock on wood). Feel free to edit it, fix any errors, complete it with whoever you think has a shot and share it with whomever you want.

  19. 2tone says:

At Dirk- Who is bashing Donovan. There is not one sentence by anyone that is bashing Donovan. There are questions about his recent play and psychological frame of mind, and why should there not be. Both of the questions I asked are valid questions. Not once was I disrespectful about Donovan.

Donovan in the past two months has said he doesn’t necessarily have the passion for soccer anymore, and that he is thinking about retiring in 2013. He may not be psychologically in it anymore. Once you start to check out mentally buddy it starts to show in that person’s game, and quite frankly it has shown in his game with the Nats and with the Galaxy this year.

  20. Gregory says:

Please realize that playing well in the MLS should give you a invite to cupcake camps, not A squad camps. The USMNT has actually depth playing in Europe and Mexico.

The MLS top to bottom is an awful league that all my friends refuse to watch because the games are ugly.

Donovan has looked old every single USMNT game since his Scottish hat-trick.

It’s science that humans lose a step around age 30. Remember Jason Seahorn different sport but same idea. Donovan has a decent skill set with the ball, and can still produce but 30 is old for a winger.

  21. Dirk says:

Donovan leads the MLS in assists this year. His loan spell at Everton was highly productive. People want to judge him based on a Mexican friendly in which he was playing with a tight hamstring and zero creativity in the midfield. You are making unqualified psychological evaluations of his state of mind. You are free to do so but it is rather meaningless.

He will be a starter on the WC 2014 team guaranteed. The only way that won’t happen is if someone better comes along. Someone in this thread mentioned Joe Gyau and Josh Gatt need to replace him. Based on what exactly? Gatt’s superior play for Molde in the Norwegian Tippeligaen?? Far below MLS in quality. Or Gyau playing for Hoffenheim’s reserve team in what is basically Germany’s 4th division? And these people are serious too.

Stop jumping to conclusions based on a handful of meaningless friendlies. When it MATTERS, he has always stepped up to the plate and will continue to do so.

  22. 2tone says:

You do know Gyau is on the first team now. Just saying.

Yes Gregory we all know how you feel about MLS.

  23. Dirk says:

I hope he does well. But let him do well before people clamor for his call up. Obviously the US needs speed on the wings, so perhaps either Gyau or Gatt will pan out.

  24. William says:

I feel good about our CB situation with Cameron playing so well and marking Chicharito in the AZTECA. It won’t get much more difficult for him than that.

I feel good about Fabian Johnson ANYWHERE in the lineup. He will be a Capt. someday for his club, possibly the US.

I feel good about where Terrance Boyd will be in about 2-1/2 more years. He is big, strong and works hard. He has imagination and anticipation in the box. He will be good.

I DON’T feel good about Castillo every getting called in. I would rather see Bornstein at LB.

I DON’T feel good about Jones playing in the MF with anyone other than MB. MB is THE MAN in the center of the pitch and it will be that way for some time to come.

I DON’T feel good about a “speedy” striker option, or at least the one’s JK has called in recently. We have another 9 months before the Gold Cup to try out the Gatt’s, Gyau’s, etc.

  25. chris says:

my prediction for roster for games against jamaica-
    gk-Howard, Rimando, Guzan
def-Bocanegra, Goodson, Gonzalez, Onyewu/John, F. Johnson, Cherundolo, Lichaj, Chandler/ Spector
mid-Jones, Bradley, Torres, Dempsey, Williams, Edu, Shea, Adu
    fwd-Donovan, Altidore, Agudelo, Gomez

    thoughts?

  26. 2tone says:

Chris- John is a no, Gonzo is a no, Agudelo over Boyd? Probably not. Cameron has solidified a starting role at CB either at LCB or RCB. I would say that Goodson may be out of the picture now. And Onyewu will have to be an absolute beast for his club the next two weeks to get called up as well.

You have pretty out there callups especially players that are not in favor at the moment.

I think we see Klinsmann bringing in a few more attacking options against Jamaica. We might see Gatt’s first call-up, and Chris Pontius get a deserved call-up.

And really we have no idea if Dempsey will be match fit and in form. He really needs to get his Club situation in order. I wouldn’t be that surprised not to see Dempsey called-up.

  27. 2tone says:

By the way Dempsey is not playing for Fulham this weekend, and Jol has pretty much phased Dempsey out.

  28. chris says:

why not john and gonzo? It would be nice to get gonzalez cap tied. I do like cameron, although he struggles with marking defensively, something gonzo does very well. If he can defend well on the ground he can completely take onyewus spot as playing pretty much a sweeper. Goodson should 100 percent be called up. I thought he played extremely well during the may/june series of games. I understand if he doesnt want onyewu, then he could be replaced by ream, parkhurst or cameron. Also i would like to see agudelo called up, give him some confidence, like he did with shea. I love boyd but i think agudelo has a higher upside. would like to see gatt and pontius get called up. Dempsey will have his situation sorted out by the end of the transfer period. Jol isnt going to blackball his hands down best player for too long.

  29. 2tone says:

No John and Gonzo because they both just got back from Injuries, and both are still not in form. Pretty sure I saw Cameron mark Chicharito well all game. Thats an Elite FWD he was marking. I question Gonzo’s quickness; I don’t question Cameron’s quickness.

Gonzo will get his chance, but it won’t be during the qualifiers. I forget that the USMNT hs a game against Russia in February. Maybe thats when John and Gonzo will both get their chances.

  30. chris says:

Have you watched a galaxy game in the last month? Gonzalez has looked fantastic, i also wana see where cameron slots into what stoke is doing, which may be as a holding mid, which a position we have a bit of depth in.
Also cameron lost chicharito a few times in the box. I was very impressed with him but i know what he is, i wana see different cbs and figure where they are in comparison to cameron. Gonzo was about to be transfered to nurnburg before he tore his acl so he def has some future. I also wana see John before it’s too late, he is 25 which even for a defender is a late time to get your first cap. I also hated edu at cb, edu is great because he is a fantastic athlete but that is not really shown at cb, also a lack of clearing. This is my starting XI at jamaica
    ——Howard———
    Dolo-Goodson-Boca-Johnson
    ——-Jones——-
    —Bradley—Torres—-
    ——Dempsey——–
    -Donovan—-Altidore

  31. William says:

    Chris,

Tell me you’re not comparing what Gonzo has done in MLS to what Cameron accomplished against an elite striker…

Plus Cameron is going to be a starter in the EPL…

Now with that said, Gonzo is VERY good but I think you grossly undervalue what Geoff Cameron brings to the squad. And I say this because in your starting XI vs. Jamaica you don’t have Cameron.

  32. 2tone says:

Chris- Cameron is going to be a starting CB for the U.S. against Jamaica.

Neither Goodson nor Boca have speed or quickness, and Jamaica has an abundance of that with their strikers.

Secondly, even if Camreon is playign CDM for Stoke does not mean he can’t play CB still for the Nats. CDM and CB are pretty similar positions not much difference. And really with Hutth being out for a few weeks; Cameron will prbably be playing CB.

Thirdly, Boca is stil playing in the third tier of Scottish football, and Goodson was struggling mightily with Brondby right now.

Yes I have watched Galaxy games the last month, and I saw a quick and speedy FWD Eddie Johnson destroy Gonzo and that defense. Gonzo is still not 100 percent.

  33. chris says:

I can see cameron being called up but i dont see him starting. Also if hernandez (who is not an elite striker), had a touch he could have scored twice. We need a larger center back to weed out crosses, someone like a goodson, gonzalez or maybe even onyewu. Im not sure whats going on with goodson but i doubt bocanegra will stay at rangers for long, at least im hoping not.

Also on another note, you guys seem to know what your talking about. Why doesn’t klinsi call up young players like adu or agudelo. I would much rather have those two then zusi and wondo.

  34. Daniil says:

Right now, adu and agudelo aren’t quite in national team form. If you’re an MLS player, you reallllly have to tear it up to get a call-up, which those two guys arent doing, but Zusi and Wondolowski are. I agree with the sentiment to leave the littluns to focus on their club form.

  35. Jaime says:

    Chris,

I am sorry but let the old guard go, Dolo and Boca are not part of 2014 so why bring the along as starters seriously.. they will on the bench when we face Jamaica here is the starting lineup:

    _____Howard_____
    Fiscal-Cameron-Ream-Johnson
    Jones
    Bradley-Torres
    Shea-Altidore-Donovan

Unfortunately Holden is still out so Jones gets the start there Shea plays because Dempsey wont be ready for this call up and torres plays because JK refuses to call Sascha. For this game this lineup is pretty strong

  36. Gregory says:

I think Capt. Boca should get the start if healthy. Jamaica is legit, most of the roster plays decent leagues in Europe.

If the Reggae Boyz’s back-line is healthy, they can play amazing pact it in Defense, coupled with speed on the counter.

I Love Edu at CB, even if he’s shaky. He can score from set pieces and is a wrecking ball that can bully players.

I would rather see D. Williams at CB then RM. Pretty sure D. Williams is going to be legit when playing a defensive position.

  37. chris says:

If you have to be on fire as an MLS player to be called up, then why was brek shea called up?
Im a huge shea fan but i just think some of the young players should always be called up to continue their development. For example agudelos growth has slowed down since not being called up anymore

  38. William says:

    Chris,

    Cameron is 6-3.

  39. Chris says:

He also struggles in the air. he gave up a wide open header to hernandez that he almost put away

  40. Daniil says:

Shea got a callup because his club situation isn’t productive for his development right now. Agudelo and adu are developing at their clubs, brek shea is being pouty and useless. Best to get him into the camp, get him more confidence, and some exposure to europe if he’s not getting it (which he’s not) with FC Dallas

Agudelo already has attention from europe and is in a productive situation with chivas usa (that’s an oxymoron but its true).

Just my opinion. I’m sure klinsmann knows what he’s doing more than I do lol

  41. William says:

No he doesn’t struggle in the air. You said that the US needed a large CB to weed out crosses. Well, Cameron is 6-3.

And on said play, the near CB has to run to the near post to cover a near post cross. The backside CB has to mark any player making a run to the middle of goal and the opposite full back is supposed to cover the back post. Cameron did what he was supposed to as did Johnson…guess who didn’t? Edu…

Cameron is very good, and better than Boca, Goodson, Gonzo, etc.

  42. chris says:

I have a hard time saying hes better than boca. i think since klinsi has taken over hes been one of our most productive players. I see your points and i could see him being called up over onyewu. you people do know cameron and gonzalez can both be called up right.

  43. William says:

I love Gonzo, but if it comes down to Gonzo or Cameron give me Cameron.

And Boca is WAY, WAY past his prime. I just don’t see Boca staring in 2014 and thus he needs to SLOWLY be replaced. You are right though, Boca at 27 was better than Cameron — who is now 27
