A few links for Saturday

In case you missed it earlier, both Josh Gatt and Conor O’Brien scored goals today.  Daniel Stevens also scored a goal in Kemi Kings’ 2-1 loss to GBK in Finland, but there are no highlights on that one.

While those guys scored in league action, a few Americans found the back of the net in preseason friendly action today.  Matt Taylor scored a goal in Preußen Münster’s 2-0 victory over Hannover 96.  Joe Gyau scored a goal in Hoffenheim’s 3-0 win over SV Stadelhofen.  And Marc Pelosi scored in Liverpool U-18′s 8-1 win over Exeter.

The annual Milk Cup tournament is a favorite on this site and Tab Ramos has named his 18-man roster for this year’s tournament.  The roster includes five players from last year’s team (Cody Cropper, Juan Pablo Ocegueda, Boyd Okwuonu, Walker Zimmerman and Victor Pineda), which finished in third place.  The roster also has forward Mario Rodriguez listed with Kaiserslautern in Germany.  The US’ first game will be next Saturday against Denmark.

We haven’t heard much on Josh Wicks since his departure from IFK Mariehamn in February, but it looks like he has ended up on Icelandic First Division side Thór Akureyri.  Fellow American and ex-teammate from Mariehamn, Joe Funicello, is also on the team.

Is this the same Thor that just advanced in the first round of the Europa League?

  2. Matt says:

That would be the same team, Ian.

Hmm. Don’t know if I see this U-20 side is really giving teams much trouble in the Milk Cup. Most of the other big players are in pre-season with their respective clubs, so I can see why a lot of them are not on the roster i.e. Brooks, Keisewetter, Dunn, Guido, pelosi, amongst more.

Really surprised Luis Gil isn’t on the squad. But I think I would rather him continue to progress in MLS right now!

So when did Mario Rodriguez get signed to Kaiserslautern? This is the first I have heard of it.

Would have liked to have seen a few of the U-18′s that performed well in Portugal in May i.e. Andrew Oliver, Mobi Fehr etc…

This defense better be a lot better than when they made the South American trip. Letting in 8 goals in 3 games is not good enough.

    Good Luck to the team.

Luis Gil starts for one of the top two teams in the MLS. It’s possible he wasn’t released for a U20 camp.
