Howie once received a death threat at a USA-Brazil friendly. He still believes in Fred Adu. He plays forward in coed rec, although not well.

Seems to be a lack of CBs on this team. There’s Opara and Kitchen (although Kitchen is really a defensive mid). Who else??? I’m guessing they might try Valentin or maybe Sarkodie. Williams and Villafana don’t seem very good in the air and are thus ill-suited to play anything except fullback.

  2. Trent Hill says:

Defense is the weakness, with CB being the heart of that weakness. Assuming we qualify, this is why most people are expecting at least 1 overage spot to go to a CB. I expect 2.

Any two of Parkhurst, Bocanegra, Goodson, Ream.

Going forward, though, the team looks dangerous. I’m hoping Wooten will be able to be released for the Olympics.

  3. Howie says:

Valentin did play centerback for two years at Akron and has played at there with Chivas and in the preseason with Montreal. Porter also says Okugo can play there. Agree that it’s really thin. This mini-generation is really thin there…the 87-88 group had John, Ream, and Gonzalez.

It should be enough to get through CONCACAF, but it could be hairy and I definitely fear a Agbossoumounde vs. Guatemala in the U20s type meltdown. Probably why we’ll see Bocanegra or Goodson at the Olympics if they make it.

  4. Steve Trittschuh says:

Thanks Howie, didn’t know that. Didn’t catch many Chivas USA games last season and I’ve never seen an Akron game with Valentin. Its too bad Agbossoumonde’s professional career hasn’t gone well, it seems he’d be a perfect fit for this group.

  5. Award says:

I would imagine that if Boss wasn’t injured he probably would have been selected. An Injury to Opara in this tournament could be catastrophic. So lets hope no injuries are sustained to Opara, Kitchen, or Valentin.
The U-20’s will be stacked with good CB’s: Okuwonu, Anthony Brooks, Will Packwood, Walker Zimmerman, Javan Torre, Cunningham, Mobi Fehr. Little surprised Porter didn’t bring in at least Ibeagha instead of S. Williams.

  6. Piaggio says:

I gotta admit I don’t really follow the MLS that much and Williams is completely new to me. But, I was looking at his wikipedia page and it says he plays as a defender for Philadelphia. Couldn’t he play at CB? Even replace Opara or Kitchen in case any of them get injured?

  7. Chris says:

I agree, I think any of the OBs in camp except villafana could play at cb because its concacaf and they aren’t really physically imposing teams, like those that we’ll play in the olympics

  8. USA says:

Caleb Porter has done an excellent job with this team. I can see them advancing. With Shea, Adu, Taylor, Gyau , Boyd I see a strong attack. The mid is full of talent as well. Don’t know much about the defence.

  9. Howie says:

I think the closest Williams has played at CB with Philadelphia was when Nowak weirdly decided to run out a 3-5-2 in the playoff series. Valdes played 32 matches and Califf 33 last year.

Even this weekend when Nowak and Califf were fighting and Califf was benched, Nowak went with Chris Albright at CB and kept Williams wide.

Not sure what he did at Harrisburg or UNC.
