George John scores a goal with West Ham’s reserves
January 24, 2012 (3:29 PM) by Matt Benson     Email This Post Email This Post

George John played his first game in West Ham’s claret and blue today, granted it was with the reserve squad, but he scored West Ham’s only goal in a 1-1 draw to Gillingham.

“I pride myself on working hard – that’s how I’ve achieved what I’ve been able to do,” said the Seattle-born centre-back. “I think I’m a decent defender so I just do my job well and pass the ball to the guys who need it.

“I’m excited about the opportunity. England has the best football league in the world and I’m always up for a new challenge. The only way to get better is to play with better players.

“This opportunity presented itself and I said ‘Why not?’. I’d like to take my career as far as I can take it and I would like to continue that career with a fantastic club like West Ham United.”

Not a bad debut for John.  His first chance for senior team action will be next Tuesday when the Hammers head to Ipswich Town.

I find it hard to believe they have 4 center halves better than him. It won’t be long before he is on the full squad and starting.

I really wish Leeds would’ve gone after him.

Can anyone else see a John-Cameron CB combo in the near future?

If we see John/Cameron we wont be wanting to see anything else

Lets see how fast he gets put into a first team and how well he play’s first. But yeah I would like to see a John/Cameron pairing. But right now Onyewu still has that RCB slot. But I will say that Bocanegras time as LCB should be winding down. With the emergence of Whitbread, Cameron, Parkhurst, John, and Ream I think the CB position will be in good hands going forward. Bocanegra does not have the right technical skill that Klinsmann is looking for. If Klinsmann continues to play a highline defense then Bocanegra’s time is coming to an end. He does not possess the right speed and or quickness to recover if a FWD beats the highline. We saw that in the Slovenia game, and his disribution is nowhere close to Cameron’s, Parkhurst’s, Ream’s or John’s. I appreciate what Bocnegra has done for the national team, but 2012 is the time to start giving more of these CB’s time on the field with the first team. Onyewu is still in the mix; he has been in really good form for Sporting CP, and looks to have finally gotten back to his best, and his passing skills and distribution have become a strength of his since going to Sporting. Personally come WC 2014 I see Onyewu and Cameron as the Cb pairing with Whitbread and John as the back-ups. Alternates: Ream, Parkhurst, Opara.

Fellas, we are starting to develop some centerbacks and that is exciting.

  5. Trent Hill says:

For now, I’m fascinated by Parkhurst/Onyewu, but I think John, Ream, and Cameron are great options for the future.

I was curious about Parkhurst….now not so much.
    I am,however, confident in John.
    I am intrigued by Whitbread.
    Cameron is promising
    Ream has potential.
I will agree with you on one point however that at least one of the CB spots is Onyewus to loose
While I don’t see him starting necessarily I would expect Gonzalez to make every roster if he makes a full recovery
