Omar Gonzalez tears his ACL
   January 6, 2012 (8:43 AM) by Howie

Well, that didn’t take long. We’ve discussed the pointlessness of MLS serving as a short-term rental shop, but we didn’t really address the perils. Sure enough, with the news of Gonzalez being loaned to Nuremberg having barely hit the wires, the young centerback is out for 6-9 months with a torn ACL.

The injury, which surely derails the hopes of Los Angeles winning the CONCACAF Champions League, will likely keep the Texan out of World Cup qualifying until the hex. If one considers that full recovery of an ACL often takes closer to two years, it’s a particularly devastating blow. Gonzalez is out of contract after this year — Nuremberg was rumored to be making a summer offer — and being hobbled will likely limit the ability of Gonzalez to find top-tier European employment.

Damn it Gonzo! He finally got his chance…

  2. William says:

    Un-effing real…just wow.

  3. Kyle says:

    karma…it’s a bitch

  4. Andrew says:

Karma? For What? What did Gonzalez do wrong?

  5. Trent Hill says:

Wow, just when he gets his chance–he gets a major injury like that. Sucky.

  6. Kyle says:

…left his first call in by Klinnsmann for a loan.

  7. Andrew says:

The loan was with the intent of trying to secure a permanent move to Europe though. That should be more important than a January camp that does’nt even fall during an international window. He has no obligation to the U.S. right now if he is playing club ball.

  8. klaatu says:

Sad, but I’d bet his career is just about over. Coming back physically is tough enough, coming back mentally is near impossible.

  9. Cody says:

Yea…that one hurts. I think we’ve seen the end of him on the usmnt.

  10. sean says:

Just curious, but why would it take two years to fully recover? Why would his career be over? Plenty of athletes have come back from this type of injury and been successful.

  11. sean says:

And onyewu had a different injury.

  12. mike says:

I thought Onyewu tore his patellar tendon. Mcbride did the same thing and came back much sooner. Onyewu took really long for some reason.

  13. jack says:

Megan Rapinoe came back from two ACL tears to be an important player at last years World Cup. All is not lost for Gonzalez.

  14. sean says:

Its a bit premature to say career is over guys. Tab Ramos came back from two ACL tears to his left knee to be a very good national team player. i’d also like to Dd that Onyewu had a completely different injury so you can’t compare the two.

  15. Howie says:

Yeah, I blew the Onyewu reference. I was trying to publish the post quickly and was thinking he had torn his ACL.

It does often take closer to two years for full recovery from an ACL tear. (Tom Brady comes to mind.) It brings doubt as to whether he would be at his current level by the start of the hex, and it raises serious questions about where he winds up in his club career.
