2012 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Draw
December 6, 2011 (3:12 PM) by Matt Benson     Email This Post Email This Post

CONCACAF held its draw for the 2012 Olympic Qualifying Tournament today with the US being selected into Group A with Canada, Cuba and El Salvador.  Group A will plays its group stage games in Nashville (booooo for me in LA), while Group B (Mexico, Honduras, Panama, Trinidad & Tobago) will play its group stage games at the Home Depot Center.

The top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals while the winners of each semifinal game earning a spot in the 2012 Olympics in London.  The key here for the US and Mexico is both need to win their group so they can avoid playing each other in the do-or-die semifinal matchup.

Both the semifinals and final will be held at Livestrong Park in Kansas City.

Also, Caleb Porter will hold a domestic training camp with the U-23’s in Sarasota, Florida between December 15-23.  That roster should be announced in the next couple of days.

Thats a great draw for the U.S. Not so much for Mexcio. I could see Mexcio not making it out of the group stage again.

  2. William says:

Likely means US will meet Honduras again to make the tournament.

  3. Trent Hill says:

Mexico could very well lose to both Panama and Honduras. Rough draw for them.

  4. Steve Trittschuh says:

Easy group for the Nats. But the Mexican U-23 team is VERY talented and the US should do whatever it can to avoid them in a semifinal match-up.

  5. ZacB says:

This draw makes me nervous. The poor timing of this tournament limits the player pool and the fact that US Soccer has placed a lot of importantance on getting to the Olympics will put a lot of pressure on some young guys that wouldn’t make the roster if we make the Olympics. I really hope Mexico holds serve and we don’t face them in the semis,it will be “game over’ in that event.

  6. William says:

With Mexico winning the u20 WC and placing 3rd in the U17 I gotta believe they win this tournament.

The US needs to beat Honduras to get in I feel.

  7. Dorito_420 says:

Actually you got it backwards, William. Mexico won the U17’s and got 3rd in the U20’s.

  8. Howie says:

Much like with the U-20s, it’s basically a one-game tournament. Hopefully Mexico rolls through Group A as I would rather the US avoid them in that semifinal.

The good news is that unlike with the 20s it won’t be a road game. I’m sure there will be some Hondurans in KCK, but at worst it will be a neutral crowd on a decent pitch unlike the disaster in Guatemala.
