A few things for Thursday evening

A couple tidbits for today.

Rumors started brewing this morning that Blackburn Rovers put in a transfer bid for FC Dallas’ George John.  The 24-year-old center back is a promising USMNT candidate, but wouldn’t have to worry about his lack of playing with the USMNT for a UK work permit since he holds a Greek passport (he was also invited by Greece’s national team to a camp in May……cap him now, Jurgen?).

He is also Howie’s and I’s winner for the 2011 “Stuart Holden MLS Cheap Contract of the Year” award since he is only making $42K this year yet is one of the better players in the league (Stuart Holden was only making about $34K a year with Houston a year or two before he left for Bolton).

There is also this report by the Lancashire Telegraph claiming that he should be on his way to Blackburn for a medical soon.

FC Dallas’ 6ft 3ins defender played for his club in Mexico on Wednesday night but is expected to arrive in England imminently, with boss Steve Kean saying he expected a defender to have a medical at Brockhall today.

With Carlos Bocanegra making his debut with Rangers today and Alejandro Bedoya having a good shot of making the roster this weekend, Rangers’ website has a nice little interview with Maurice Edu to talk about the new Americans.

For those of you not paying attention since the US did not qualify, the final of the U-20 World Cup is this weekend and will be between Brazil and Portugal.  Brent Latham takes a quick look back at what could have been and selects a starting lineup/roster if the US were in the tournament.  It is too bad that the US did not qualify as the talent at the U-20 is pretty good.

And in the “rut roh” department, Stefan Jerome’s Sigma Olomouc has been fined and stripped of points for match-fixing.

George John to Blackburn eh? Sucks for my FCD, but good for the man! Hope it works out.
