US-Guadeloupe Aftermath Links

It wasn’t pretty, but the US won 1-0 and advanced to the quarterfinals.  As for some quick thoughts from me:

– Hey Jozy, where has that been?
– Steve Cherundolo and Eric Lichaj looked good on the flanks.
– Clint Dempsey did not have a good game shooting.  And the team as a whole was awful at finishing.
– The team in general looks tired.
– Hopefully Lichaj continues to emerge at left back as Carlos Bocanegra brought a calming presence to the middle of the backline.
– Landon Donovan had another pretty quiet game.  How bad was his “illness” from last week?
– Granted it had a lot to do with the competition, but US Soccer is fun to watch when they are attacking that much (and even better when they score!).
– That stadium looked and sounded great.  A potential place to have US-Mexico in the future?

Howie was in attendance, so I am eager to hear his thoughts once he gets back.  Here are the highlights.

Now for some links/recaps/reviews/player ratings from around the web.

Fun fact of the game: Jozy Altidore is now tied at 12 goals in 12th place in U.S. history with Carlos Bocanegra, Frank Klopas, Eddie Johnson and Clint Mathis.

The US will next play Jamaica on Sunday at 3 PM EDT at RFK Stadium.  If they win, they will play the winner of Panama/El Salvador.

Thoughts on the game?

Jozy Altidore from distance with power???? Jozy Altidore helping defend?????

Clint Dempsey needs to learn form over function.

LD was a tad more active.

There’s something wrong with this team. Hopefully this is a case of not peaking too early.

Lichaj, Cherundolo, and Bedoya share MotM. Solid D (if a bit shaky on the left) and excellent getting forward. Lichaj got into spots we haven’t exploited in ages. Served up a peach that Donovan wasted. Cherundolo did equally well only to send inviting crosses to a slow, unathletic Wondo.

Jozy should not score a wondergoal and call it a night after the 9th min.

Dempsey possibly guilty of one of the worst misses in US history.

Is Donovan sick, injured, or just past it?

MB90 safe and steady. Only one errant pass that I saw.

Jones a little awkward but OK.

  3. Thursby says:

I was happy with all the chances created. I would have been happier if they could have converted more of them.

My MotM was Cherundolo. The most disappointing player was Donovan. I have never seen him get caught from behind so many times. Are we witnessing his decline?

  4. Steve Trittschuh says:

One of the worst games I’ve seen Donovan and Dempsey play. If they keep playing like this the USMNT will not make it past the semis.

  5. Garret Craig (garretkc) says:

I don’t think they could have USA/Mexico at Livestrong, just because the capacity is too low.

  6. Cam says:

why doesn’t anyone talk about USA vs. Mexico in the pacific northwest? not only are there great fans in that region but also due to the relatively low amount of Mexican immigrants in that part of the country there is a better chance that the crowd would be significantly pro-US

  7. Davis says:

I agree with Cam. I’m dying to watch a MNT game at Qwest.
