First Great American Left Back!
   April 29, 2011 (8:15 AM) by Matt

Howie and I have joked about this a little bit recently, but we want to compile a list of viable left back options for this World Cup cycle, so fire away options in the comments.

Jonathan Bornstein?  Heath Perace?  Brek Shea?  Bobby Convey?  Diego Chavarri?  Greg Garza?

Who do you have?

  1. Ben says:

Gotta go with Greg Garza. He played well in the last U-20 qualifying matches, and is a natural defender unlike Shea, who could be a good prospect as well.

  2. Grant says:

    lichaj?

  3. Steve Trittschuh says:

Chris Wingert has been playing very well for RSL right now and, unlike any of the players mentioned, has consistently been playing LB in a professional league. I think he at least deserves a chance. He played in the CONCACAF Champions League, he appears to have pretty good pace and he doesn’t make many glaring mistakes. Why not give him a chance?

  4. Freegle says:

Robbie Rogers… make the transition. NOW.

  5. Creige says:

Zach Loyd Zach Loyd needs to be on the Gold Team Zach Loyd

  6. Kyle says:

    Zach Loyd

  7. Steve Trittschuh says:

I love how many people jump on the Loyd bandwagon after one good game. He doesn’t even play left back for FC Dallas — Ugo Ihemelu does. Meanwhile, Wingert has been a solid left back for two seasons and one Champion’s league tourney and gets no love.

    Really people???

  8. Chris says:

Sean Cunningham 18 years old with molde in scadanavia. lB been making bench. And German born Daniel Williams with freighberg I here plays lb. Interesting

  9. Ryan says:

I like what I saw from Loyd (reminded me of Hejduk), but I’m not going to anoint him the LB Savior.

I’m been hoping to see Shea at LB for about 2 years now, but he needs consistent playing time at one position, and Dallas does not need him at LB.

Right now, my vote goes to Bornstein, but I would like to see Pearce step his game up.

  10. Howie says:

Loyd and Shea both need to actually be playing LB regularly. Right now, Jair Benetiz is playing primiarly there. Loyd is a useful guy at any backline position, and Schellas can’t decide if Shea is a CB, LW, or LB.

Convey looked great at LB last year, now Yallop has him playing everywhere from RCM to RW in the 4-3-3.

  11. Caleb says:

As an FC Dallas fan, I’m thinking about suggesting “Odds for where Brek Shea will play tonight” to a betting service.

  12. Howie says:

Caleb, that is so brilliant I am disappointed that Matt and I hadn’t thought of it previously. Let it be said that if this was an MLS blog, we’d have a weekly poll for that.

  13. tom says:

I think Heath Pearce has been playing CB the last couple games for Chivas USA.
