Jozy Altidore is headed to Bursaspor on loan
January 31, 2011 (4:17 PM) by Matt Benson     Email This Post Email This Post

Of course a couple minutes after I post that there is no real news to report on Jozy Altidore, he fires up the twitter and confirms that he is headed to Bursaspor on loan for the rest of the season.

Altidore has struggled to find consistent playing time with La Liga third place side Villarreal this season and a loan deal to the defending Turkish champions will hopefully allow him to see more of the field.

Bursaspor are currently in second place of the Turkish Super Lig, two points behind Trabzonspor.  They also participated in Champions League earlier this season.  As for some other club history, their most successful foray into European competition came in the 1974–75 European Cup Winners’ Cup when they reached the quarterfinals.

This will be Altidore’s third loan stint since coming to Villarreal in 2008, having barely played at Xerez and saw lots of playing time at Hull City last year.

One other non-Jozy tidbit that I forgot to post about in the last entry, Howie already pointed out that Lamar Neagle would not be returning to Finland, but you can add two other names to that list.  Greg Eckhardt and Brian Pope did not re-sign with VPS.

  1. Chas says:

Great movy for Jozy. It must have been frustrating that when Nilmar was injured he played less, and someone else won the job to be the starting forward.

  2. Alex says:

I think Jozy can handle this league. The few Turkish league games I have seen are slow, physical, and pretty technical. If anything, I hope the league will get his diving propensity in check, as the refs are a little less trigger happy with fouls and cards.

  3. Howie says:

I imagine Sal Zizzo and Danny Szetela are currently calling every club in Turkey in hopes of continuing the Turkish reunion of the stars of the 2007 U-20 squad. Too bad Mikey is missing out by going to Aston Villa instead of Galatasaray.
