HerculezGomez

Copa MX group play this week brought plenty of action from Americans playing south of the border. Most notably the continued reemergence of Hérculez Gómez at Puebla, who scored yet again for La Franja on Tuesday night in a 2-1 win vs. Mérida. Herc now has three goals in just five appearances since his winter transfer (highlights). Meanwhile, Joe Corona wore the captain’s armband Wednesday night for the third straight Copa MX match for Tijuana. Alejandro Guido, Paul Arriola and John Requejo all also got on the act with significant minutes for the Xolos, who picked up a 3-2 victory vs. Coras de Tepic.

Last weekend marked the return of the Bundesliga, and the U.S. contingent’s German clubs were back it with midweek games. Fabian Johnson got another start on the left wing for Borussia Mönchengladbach on Tuesday, going the distance and helping the Föhlenelf to a 1-0 win over Freiburg, securing the club’s hold on 3rd place on the table (highlights). Timothy Chandler, John Anthony Brooks and Julian Green did not play for their respective clubs, each for very different reasons.

Meanwhile, in perhaps the game of the week, or at least the midweek, Aron Jóhannsson started Thursday, played 85 minutes and scored the winning goal for AZ Alkmaar in a huge 1-0 win at Ajax. It’s the second straight game on the score sheet for AronJo (highlights). He subbed off late with an apparent ankle injury, though subsequent reports indicate the injury is not considered serious and he may only miss one game (link).

Here’s the rundown on how everyone did so far this week (Monday thru Thursday). We’re changing things up this time with a breakdown by league, rather than a straight alphabetical list. Let us know which format you prefer:

BUNDESLIGA (Germany)

John Anthony Brooks (Hertha BSC) – John was on the bench but did not play Wednesday in Hertha’s 1-0 loss to Bayer Leverkusen. He was benched by manager Jos Luhukay, who was subsequently fired on Thursday (link).

Timothy Chandler (Eintracht Frankfurt) – Timmy was not in the 18 Tuesday in Frankfurt’s 1-1 draw vs. Wolfsburg. He was serving a one game suspension for yellow card accumulation.

Julian Green (Hamburger SV) – Julian was not in the 18 Wednesday in Hamburg’s 3-0 loss at Paderborn 07. He has not made the squad in two games since the end of the winter break.

Fabian Johnson (Borussia Mönchengladbach) – Fabian started and played the full 90 minutes Tuesday in ‘Gladbach’s 1-0 win vs. Freiburg. He was involved in the buildup of the lone goal scored.

EREDIVISIE (Netherlands)

Aron Jóhannsson (AZ Alkmaar) – Aron played 85 minutes and scored the only goal Thursday in AZ Alkmaar’s 1-0 win at Ajax. He subbed off with an ankle injury, but reports indicate it is not considered serious.

Rubio Rubin (FC Utrecht) – Rubio played the full 90 minutes Wednesday in Utrecht’s 1-0 loss at Willem II.

LIGA MX (Mexico)

Fernando Arce, Jr. (Club Tijuana) – Fernando was on the bench but did not play Wednesday in Tijuana’s 3-2 Copa MX win vs. Coras de Tepic.

Alejandro Guido (Club Tijuana) – Alejandro started and played the full 90 minutes Wednesday in Tijuana’s 3-2 Copa MX win vs. Coras de Tepic.

Michael Orozco (Puebla F.C.) – Michael was not in the 18 Tuesday in Puebla’s 2-1 Copa MX win vs. Mérida.

John Requejo (Club Tijuana) – John came off the bench and played 25 minutes Wednesday in Tijuana’s 3-2 Copa MX win vs. Coras de Tepic.

Jesus Vazquez (Leones Negros) – Jesus got the start and scored a goal in Leones Negros’ 2-0 win over Necaxa in Copa MX action on Wednesday (highlights).

THE CHAMPIONSHIP (England – 2nd Division)

Tim Ream (Bolton Wanderers) – Played the full 90 minutes Wednesday in Bolton’s 2-1 4th Round FA Cup loss vs. Liverpool. Bolton led late, but gave up 86′ and 90′ goals.

ASCENSO MX (Mexico – 2nd Division)

Julio Morales (Coras de Tepic) – Julio was on the bench but did not play Wednesday in Tepic’s 3-2 Copa MX loss at Tijuana. He is not yet USMNT-eligible, but his recent January camp call-up certainly bears watching.
