I don’t really see him as a starter for Everton in 2018, so I guess it’s almost like a Giggs situation where he’ll be a quasi player coach at the end of his deal. I don’t think he can pull a Friedel because his game has always been a lot more athletic and reflex reliant whereas Friedel has always been the more cerebral one who can still play at an older age. Alas, this should be a reminder that this summer will be his last big coming out party as Guzan will take his spot in the next couple of years and likely keep it for a few. It’s possible Tim will retire internationally soon and we always need to be looking forward to the next generation.

People close to the team have said that the reason howard remains USA #1 is that guzan is willing to be #2. After this world cup, it’ll be guzan #1, and howard may retire internationally. This is a good deal for him. By 2017 at the latest its hard to see him still starting, but he’ll still be getting paid.

@ daniil who are these “people close to the team”? you’re right he might retire after the world cup but i do not understand this pervasive idea that Howard is definitively worse than Guzan.

It’s a “grass is always greener” mentality and it’s a no risk argument because nobody is going to call you crazy if you think that Guzan should play. I think when the nats lose people focus on the replacement of Howard because goalkeeper is one of the few positions in which we have 2 world class options.

Just media drudges, nobody too important, but closer to the team than me or you (well, me at least. Maybe we should ask sacha kljestan what he thinks). Andy Glockner said it for SI, and I thought I saw other people saying it but I could be imagining.

I don’t think howard is definitely worse than guzan, but in 2018 its very unlikely that howard, at 38, will be our best gk (mind it might not be guzan either). For that reason I don’t think howard should be our #1 after this world cup. The objective of the USMNT should be success in the world cup, and that means going with someone else in the autumn of 2014.
