Matthew Dunn signs with Chivas USA
April 17, 2014 (3:31 PM) by Howie Michaels     Email This Post Email This Post

Matthew Dunn, who once upon a time (2011, to be precise) captained ‘Merica at the U-17 World Cup, has signed with Chivas USA. The signing had been rumored (reported? He was posting about it on Facebook) but wasn’t official until today, most likely because MLS was trying to figure out what mechanism would allow him to enter the league as a former youth international but still reunite with his former U-17 coach, Wilmer Cabrera.

Dunn is a product of Köln’s youth academy and was with OFK Beograd in some capacity during the 2012 season. The 20 year-old midfielder spent last year at the University of Maine at Fort Kent, a small liberal arts school in Franchophone Maine that is a member of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (I had literally never heard of it until Dunn) that is apparently okay with former professionals in its ranks. He had a strong year with the Bengals, scoring 7 goals along with dishing out 10 assists in 17 games although I am not going to try to gauge the level of play in USCAA.

Howie once received a death threat at a USA-Brazil friendly. He still believes in Fred Adu. He plays forward in coed rec, although not well.

A few USCAA soccer schools are around Pittsburgh and had a friend who played at one. Imagine good high school soccer or bad division III soccer as the level of competition… either way I’m confident in saying the MLS will be a step up

I’m actually from Maine and I’ve spent a significant amount of time thinking about how the heck this guy could have ended up at that school. It’s difficult to express how little there is in Fort Kent, Maine. I have never actually been there but it is Aroostook County, which is the largest County by land mass in Maine but smallest in population. There are 70,000 people in the entire county. I looked at the roster and there were 3 Americans on the squad last year. I just don’t understand how/where/why these guys are recruiting so hard considering they’re in community college league basically. This is just baffling on so many levels.

contrary to popular belief…there is civilization in Southern Maine!

  4. Cam says:

ok just fact checked myself not the smallest population total of any maine county…but my point stands, theres nothing there. it’s vast and barren.
