Matthew Dunn, who once upon a time (2011, to be precise) captained ‘Merica at the U-17 World Cup, has signed with Chivas USA. The signing had been rumored (reported? He was posting about it on Facebook) but wasn’t official until today, most likely because MLS was trying to figure out what mechanism would allow him to enter the league as a former youth international but still reunite with his former U-17 coach, Wilmer Cabrera.
Dunn is a product of Köln’s youth academy and was with OFK Beograd in some capacity during the 2012 season. The 20 year-old midfielder spent last year at the University of Maine at Fort Kent, a small liberal arts school in Franchophone Maine that is a member of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (I had literally never heard of it until Dunn) that is apparently okay with former professionals in its ranks. He had a strong year with the Bengals, scoring 7 goals along with dishing out 10 assists in 17 games although I am not going to try to gauge the level of play in USCAA.
