Another start at right back and another assist for Fabian Johnson, this one happening on Hoffenheim’s game-winning goal as they defeated Bayer Leverkusen 3-2. Here are some highlights from the match.
Although I love Cameron, this is why F.Johnson or Chandler will start against Ronaldo
With Fabian Johnson getting more run at RB at Hoffenheim, I’m starting to lean towards a FJ-Cameron-Besler-Beasley backline for the USMNT.
although that would be great in your opinion, you are not the manager. fabian will start at LM and chandler will not be on the plane. I’m not saying that’s for the best, but that’s what is going to happen.
is besler pacy enough for portugal?
It would be risky for Geoff to be put at CB. He’s gotten zero time there. Gonzo and Besler both have their shortcomings but at least they regularly play the position.
I have no problem with Besler. I think he was our best defender in 2013 (looking at US games only, not at the club level).
I would rather have an out-of-position Cameron at CB than Omar right now, who hasn’t looked right since his knee injury. If Omar can get back to the level that he was playing with in 2011 when he won MLS Defender of the Year, then I have no problem having him start at CB with Cameron at RB then we can start talking about Fabian vs. Beasley at LB.
I thought that was one of Besler’s best attributes…speed
I agree with Matt on Omar, I haven’t seen him really lock down the position. I would assume I was with most people pushing for him to get a look by Jurgen when he was a one man back line for the Galaxy, but to be honest I’ve never seen him bring that form to the USMNT. Never mind, I don’t think he is on that form now for the Galaxy either.
I still think our biggest issues are: 1) who will pair with Besler; 2) right back; and 3) LW/LM.
I think Johnson slotting in at RB solves more issues than it creates and functionally it makes more sense given the players involved. If Zusi is on the right wing it allows him the space wide he wants, and it opens the channel for Johnson to cut in as an inverted RB. While watching Beasley defend is not for the faint of heart, he has done a good job at LB, and he provides a ton of offense from the position which we will need given our lack of talent at LM/LW.
