Tuesday linkage

This video pretty much sums up US Soccer right now (minus the cheap shot portion).

I posted a bunch of injury news on Saturday.  As for some more updates, DaMarcus Beasley had to be subbed off the field on Sunday due to a foot injury.  Alejandro Bedoya sat out this weekend’s game with FC Nantes due to a hamstring injury, but he is hopeful he can play next weekend.  Jermaine Jones’ Besiktas debut has been delayed due to a groin injury.

We know Eric Lichaj is going to be out a while, but his groin injury could possibly be a hernia.  And Aron Johannsson missed this weekend’s game with AZ Alkmaar, but he should be returning to training this week.

Sebastian Lletget scored a goal for West Ham United’s U-21 team in a 2-1 loss to Manchester United on Monday.  The goal is Lletget’s fourth of the year with West Ham’s U-21 team.

Stuart Holden is starting to train again with Bolton Wanderers and he received some good news from manager Dougie Freedman last week.  It looks like Freedman and Bolton are going to give him a new contract this summer once his current contract expires.

Kicker is reporting that Fabian Johnson will sign with Borussia Moenchengladbach this summer once his current contract with Hoffenheim expires.

With a bunch of Huddersfield Town’s players returning from injury, manager Mark Robins told the UK press that they might send Duane Holmes out on loan so he can get some playing time.

Another “Jozy Altidore does more than score goals” type story out of Sunderland.  Teammate Adam Johnson had some nice things to say about Altidore’s performance against Newcastle from two weeks ago.

“There is a lot more to him than goals. Against Newcastle he must have been a nightmare to play against. Genuinely, I thought he was awesome.

Even though he scored two goals in a friendly for Bob Bradley’s Stabæk last week, Michael Stephens, as well as fellow American Christian Eissele, are trialing with Swedish side GAIS.

Goalkeeper Alex Horwath has been trialing with Ljungskile SK in Sweden over the last two weeks and he was rewarded with a contract with the club.

Here is a new interview with Fabian Hurzeler where we learn that he also holds a passport with Switzerland to go along with the US and Germany.

And finally, some new jerseys got released this week.  Josh Gatt, Ben Spencer, Ethan Horvath and Molde FK have some new home and away kits for the 2014 season.  While Eric Lichaj and Nottingham Forest have a new third jersey for this year.

New Klinsmann interview, this time with FIFA…

I still want him to score goals, but nice to see Altidore getting praise for Sunderland as he is their primary exit valve. As well, he has done many things well since his arrival in terms of holding the ball up well and linking the midfield to attack.

I am still critical of the runs he is making, because I think he is often putting himself in a position not to score, but I’m not entirely convinced that this isn’t what the manager is telling him to do since he is so much to deal with for the fullbacks.

You can tell a players impact when he leaves the field, and on his recent form when Altidore gets pulled off Sunderland become a shell without is impact.

Now if he could just score the winning goal against City in the Cup he’d become an club legend over night.

Injuries are part of the game. Better to get the injury bug in February then May.

As fans we are obsessed with goals, but Jozy is doing a fine job at the dirty work for his team. He muscles with the best CBs in the World. I’m talking out of my a$$ but I think he’s growing more of a player banging with the best in the game even if he’s not scoring. I only half believe that I wish he as still scoring hat-tricks with AZ.

  4. Dirk says:

Pity about Lichaj. He’s better than Evans and can also play LB. Groin injuries are never ever good. That’s been the one thing that has held him back, he can’t go a full season.

In other news, the U-18’s lost to the Canary Islands U-18’s 3-2 to round off their Copa Alantico tournament. Their final record in the tournament was 0-0-3 after a 1-0 loss to the Argentina U-20’s and another 1-0 loss to the Spain U-18’s.

Bad week all around. I guess I can take solace in the fact that the U-17’s won the Aegean Cup recently. Keep in mind the U-18’s had the the golden boy Palmer-Brown on their side. I wonder of he played well in the tournament. I hope someone can find highlights or a match report or something.

Forest coach said yesterday that Lichaj will be out 7-10 days. Will be training next week.
