Motown Philly: Maurice Edu is officially back in MLS
January 27, 2014 (2:03 PM) by Howie Michaels     Email This Post Email This Post

After a bunch of rumored controversy, Stoke City has agreed to loan another American, as Maurice Edu will spend 2014 playing in MLS for the Philadelphia Union. The midfielder, who has made just one (!) Premier League appearance since joining Stoke during the infamous Rangers’ fire sale of 2012, will be on loan with an option to buy.

After reasonable success at Rangers (despite being injury-plagued for two years), Edu failed to have such success with Stoke City. He had a decent spell on loan with Bursapor in Turkey in the latter part of last year, but he has been a non-factor for Stoke since then. With a deep central midfield for the US, it makes sense for Edu to go after any playing time ahead of the World Cup, where he is currently probably on the outside looking in. There was allegedly interest from France (sort of a rollover rumor for Edu, it seems), England, and Spain, but Edu opted for the City of Brotherly Love.

Edu joins Brek Shea (Barnsley) and Juan Agudelo (FC Utrecht) on the suddenly stacked “Stoke Americans Loaned Out” 3×3 team.

  1. Gregory says:

Mo Edu has no chance of claiming a CDM spot with Danny Williams in form with Reading. His only chance is making the bench over Parkhurst as the utility defensive player.
