Sunderland is headed to its first League Cup Final since 1985 after knocking off Manchester United in penalty kicks today.  Jozy Altidore came off the bench and played 34 minutes (no penalty kick attempted) in the victory.  Here are the goals and the crazy penalty kicks.

  1. Trent Hill says:

Englishmen went 0 for 4 in their kicks. The remaining 6 players went 3 for 6. Wow.

  2. CP says:

The Daily Mail gave Jozy a player rating of 4…yikes!

  3. CP says:

Trent – no wonder why England always loses (to Germany, etc.) on penalties! Hahahaha

  4. Ian says:

Altidore was better than a 4. He played on the wing which is somewhere I’ve never seen him before. He was getting back defensively and actually blocked a couple crosses. The one give away I recall he chested the ball to a teammate who retreated because they thought he was bringing it down to control it. On the attack he was pretty sharp and aggressive, but is unwilling to shoot. I remember a number of times he played the ball back at the edge of the box instead of pulling the trigger. Those passes weren’t terrible decisions though as it allowed Sunderland to sustain pressure on Manchester United for long periods. I was disappointed he didn’t take a penalty, especially considering how atrocious some of those attempts were. This is a small thing that probably has nothing to do with the outcome, but he physically manhandled Rafael on the wing and he’s the player who missed the deciding penalty haha. Overall, I’d give him a 6 seeing as he didn’t do much wrong and the offense was much better when he came in and got involved.

  5. Davis says:

The Sunderland message boards pretty much hate Jozy. I’ve seen multiple people call him the worst prem striker they’d ever seen. I think that’s awful harsh but I think we need to start accepting the fact that Jozy isn’t going to succeed at Sunderland. He’s played extremely well for the Yanks and in the Netherlands, but I have yet to see him have a truly noteworthy performance in England.

  6. Slinker says:

Is there no away goals rule?

  7. Matt says:

The League Cup semis have a weird away goal rule. They don’t go into effect until after the extra time period.

If neither team would have scored in extra time (so 2-2 on aggregate with Man Utd having the only away goal), Manchester United would have won. Since both teams scored in extra time to make it 3-3 on aggregate with both team having an away goal, that is why it went to penalty kicks.

  8. Dirk says:

Jozy was okay. Two things are killing him.

He is not making aggressive runs for the ball, particularly at the top of the box. He is passive. Back to goal, turn and shoot doesn’t seem to be his thing.

His teammates don’t seem to have a lot of faith in him.

Maybe that’s why he doesn’t make those runs… catch 22.
