US to play at Ukraine in March
January 15, 2014 (12:18 PM) by Matt Benson     Email This Post Email This Post

The Ukrainian Football Federation’s website has this up on their site.  For those of you that can’t read Ukrainian (who doesn’t?!), Ukraine will host the US on March 5 in a city/stadium to be determined.  The report also says that they have until February 10 to decide on a location for the friendly.

Steven Goff has also chimed in which makes this rumor look like it has some legs.

The US is 0-2-1 all-time against Ukraine with all three meetings taking place in the US.  The last meeting was a 1-0 victory by Ukraine in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania on October 23, 1993.  Ukraine is ranked #18 by FIFA and #20 by Elo.

Thoughts on the match/opponent?

Goff was able to get some form of confirmation.

Good that we have more friendlies in Europe during March. Ensures our first team will be there and we get more used to the European style of play prior to the WC…

Interesting situation with ukraine, similar to us with a lot of regression of top players to their domestic league (and tymo to russia which is similar-natured). A lot of young quality in that team, they almost took down france in the playoff, and they play well at home. Not to great defensively, so it should be a fun game 🙂
