A whole bunch of links for Monday
January 6, 2014 (12:02 AM) by Matt Benson     Email This Post Email This Post

Lets start this off with some in-house stuff.  Will did another goalkeeper interview for the site.  This time with Notre Dame goalkeeper Pat Wall.  So go read it.

I also posted most of the highlights from this weekend’s FA Cup.  Finally was able to find Jozy Altidore’s assist, but in GIF form.

A couple photos from those FA Cup matches.  Clint Dempsey is back in a Fulham shirt and this just looks right to me.  Tim Ream is sporting a “milk was a bad choice” beard these days.  And Sebastian Lletget made his first team debut for West Ham in a loss to Nottingham Forest.

In the rare case you missed it, Jurgen Klinsmann selected his roster for January’s camp on Friday.  He also did his usual post-roster release Q&A on US Soccer’s website.  And he also did a video where he talks about the camp.

The US U-20 and U-18 teams are also holding January camps and their rosters were released this weekend.

One of those players on the U-20 team, Freiburg’s Eric Lickert, talked to Brian Sciaretta about his selection to the squad.

Time to strike up the rumor mill.  Juan Agudelo was spotted at Stoke City’s Britannia Stadium this weekend.  Maybe attempting another shot at a work permit?  While last week’s lazy rumor was Michael Bradley-to-Fulham, this week’s looks like it could be Aron Johannsson-to-Stoke City.  “What’s a team with a bunch of Americans…….yeah, put Stoke City down”.

Liga MX kicked off this past weekend with some Americans sporting some new shirts for the season.  DaMarcus Beasley played a little wing back and left back for Puebla in these new blew Kappa kits.  And four Americans (Greg Garza, Joe Corona, Edgar Castillo and Herculez Gomez) saw the field for Tijuana in these new white Nike kits.  I like the Tijuana shirts with the black/grey on the sleeves.  Speaking of Liga MX, we might have some new content on that in the near future.

Now that Bob Bradley is the manager of Stabæk, he is doing the US press tour with Brian Sciaretta and Greg Seltzer.  And here is an extended video interview with Bob.

Kicker is already rolling out its World Cup preview stuff.  Here is a Google-translated breakdown of the USMNT.  They also have a video on Jozy Altidore, which also includes some quotes from former USMNT player Thomas Dooley (the video is all in German).  And Kicker must be a huge Jozy fan as they have a photo slideshow of his career.  Won’t they be surprised when Aron Johannsson is starting against Germany instead of Jozy come World Cup time (I am joking……sort of).  And if you know German, feel free to let us know what is being said in the comments.

Brooks Lennon, a 16-year-old from Arizona playing with Liverpool’s U-17 team, was in the build-up of Liverpool’s goal in this video (I believe he is #7).

This video was done last September by MLS, but I am always a fan of American soccer history (and it is new to me), so here is a short video on the Bethlehem Steel.

The guys over at A Football Report put together their annual “The Best of Football Writing” list for 2013.  Some really good stuff in there.  Bookmark it and read many of those over the next couple weeks.

And finally, I haven’t done a shameless plug thing in a while.  We are on Facebook, so go “like” us if you want.  Not a Facebook fan?  We are also on Twitter.  The main account (also basically my account) is @socceroverthere, while Howie can be followed at @Howie_OT.  Why not also follow other guys who help out with the site from time to time:  Will (@letskillrobots) and Jon (@ArnoldcommaJon).

Kicker’s is the first accurate description of our formation I’ve ever seen. Thank you kicker T-T
I know the players play the game, but I am afraid that joachim low will just tactically dismantle us. We had the benefit of not facing any geniuses in qualifying (although dely valdes has a bright future). Getting out-coached tactically to the point of obliteration is a distinct possibility at the world cup.

Glad Jozy got the assist, but lets be honest, we’re all glad the game wasn’t televised. From the radio broadcast it sounded like he had 5 really good opportunities to get a goal and fumbled every one of them against really weak competition.

Nice to know I can count his truly bad games on one hand, but still, not good at all for his confidence.

Dooley basically just says that Jozy’s an “animal” and was an exceptional player from early on in his career. Had success at the national team from a very young age. Had trouble early on in his career in Europe, but has advanced technically at AZ. He has the unique combination of youth and experience. The announcer mentions the racism incident in Holland and describes Altidore (incorrectly) as cool and calm (he was calm during the chanting, but Jozy does lose his cool with bad calls and dirty play).

From watching this video and reading the photo spread, Kicker (and the Germans in general) see Altidore as kind of unpredictable and (in my opinion) consider him a serious threat because of his combination of atheticism, strength, and technical ability (hold up play and shot). Basically, it’s hard to defend Jozy b/c you don’t know which Jozy is going to show up and can pull things out of his hat.

    Thank you Jack.

And I think most USMNT fans would agree that we never know what Jozy is going to show up.
