Here is your US-Austria pre-game primer

Here is a quick rundown of things you might want to look at before today’s game.

» The game is at 2:45 PM Eastern on NBC Sports Network, UniMas.

» Austria is ranked #53 by FIFA and #50 by Elo, while the US is #13 by FIFA and #12 by Elo.

» Here are the official game notes by US Soccer.  As for some other random stats/facts:

The US is 1-1-0 all-time against Austria, including a 3-0 win in Vienna on April 22, 1998.  The US goal scorers that day were Frankie Hedjuk, Brian McBride and Claudio Reyna.

With last Friday’s shutout against Scotland, Tim Howard now has 34 career clean sheets, second most in US history.  Kasey Keller has the most with 47.

No matter the result on Tuesday, the US will set single-year records for wins (currently at 16), winning percentage (currently at 16-3-3; .795) and goals per game (currently at 2.32).

» Here are highlights from that 1998 victory against Austria.

Want to see various members of the current team recite the Gettysburg Address?  Why not.

» No game previews for this one, but The Shin Guardian takes a quick look at most first halves for the USMNT.

» If you are into USMNT jerseys, check out our new-ish USMNT jersey history page.

» And finally, a couple links on some youth players.  Brian Sciaretta spoke to Junior Flores while Marc Pelosi signed a new deal with Liverpool.

Janko and Alaba are the danger-men here. Austria is a strong team and we need to play well to beat them.

  2. dertominator says:

Is Frankie Hedjuk’s the worst goal celebration dance in US MNT history?

  3. Gregory says:

Beasley went 90 and Evans got a little rest.

Lichaj starts at RB or LB?

Was Edu called into camp? Like to see Edu at RB or CB.

    damn reyna was good

Love the reading. Hearing all the slightly different accents… that’s what I love about this country and this soccer team.

And that goal celebration is pretty cringe-worthy

Alaba and Michael Bradley will play the same role for their teams today: a deeplying 8 CM, not quite to a 6. This will be a tough test for our midfield play. Two teams whose strengths are the center of midfield, this will be a chessmatch.

  5. Ian says:

There’s not going to be a way to watch a replay of this unless you have NBC Sports right? Please, somebody tell me I’m wrong.

  6. Trent Hill says:

Ian–you could always get video capture software and record it on your laptop. I’m doing that with the Ireland game while watching the USA game.

  7. daniil says:

Just occurred to me why “Herzog” was so familiar…
