A lot of stuff happening over the weekend.
Steven Goff has his usual weekly roundup of Americans abroad to catch you up one what you may have missed.
We had some goals this weekend. Aron Johannsson had himself a peach of a game, scoring twice and setting up the other goal in AZ’s 3-1 win (highlights). Alejandro Bedoya came off the bench and scored the game-winning goal in Nantes’ 1-0 win (highlights). Terrence Boyd came off the bench and scored the game-tying goal from the penalty spot in a 2-2 draw (highlights). Shawn Parker got the start and scored the opening goal of the game in Mainz’s 4-1 loss to Bayern Munich (highlights). And Matt Taylor got the start and scored his fourth league goal of the campaign in Preußen Münster’s 4-0 win (highlights).
We also had some goals from guys in lower leagues, which we don’t have highlights for, but you can follow along with our goal tracker.
In case you missed it on Friday, Will Packwood was sent out on loan to League Two side Bristol Rivers. Packwood found himself in the lineup over the weekend (photo) and apparently had a Man of the Match type performance in the loss. The local press also had some nice things to say about Packwood.
One huge positive was the debut performance of on-loan centre-back Will Packwood, whose mature display belied his years and the fact that he is looking to bounce back from a career-threatening broken leg.
The Birmingham City player looked a born leader, unafraid to issue instructions to more senior colleagues, and won most of his battles in the air and one the ground.
Duane Holmes also made an impact this weekend while coming off the bench for Huddersfield Town in a loss to Leicester City.
Death, taxes and Zak Whitbread injuries. His latest is a calf injury which saw him get subbed out in the first half.
Michael Bradley returned from injury and made Roma’s bench, but did not get in the game on Friday, a 2-0 win over Napoli. With a couple other teams losing in Europe, Roma is the only perfect team in any of the top European leagues.
Brek Shea and Maurice Edu both started for Stoke City’s U-21 team on Friday with Shea scoring a goal and picking up a red card.
Steven Goff is hearing that Gent, Brugge and QPR are interested in Oguchi Onyewu. Greg Seltzer is reporting that Gooch is currently training with QPR.
The Americans Outlaws are getting some love this week with Founder and President Korey Donahoo making an appearance on the Men in Blazers’ SiriusXM show last week. And Brian Straus takes a quick look at the various chapter logos.
Mexico hired Miguel Herrera this weekend meaning they have gone through four managers over the last month. The US have had four managers over the last 18 years.
And Zlatan Ibrahimovic is really, really good.
