Aron Johannsson had himself a nice day on Sunday, scoring two goals and picking up an assist in AZ’s 3-1 win. Here are AZ’s goals.
Ice Man is an assassin!
Loved the cut back and fire to far post.
His touch is sick….next World Cup he will definitely be a starter…
Question is will he be able to displace Dempsey or Altidore in this cycle??
That third goal, though. Jeeze.
I think Dempsey has possibly lost his starting spot. It’s early yet, but he hasn’t been playing well for the Sounders (to be fair: fighting an injury). Regardless, we have to make room on the field for this kid.
It’s going to be either Demps or Altidore that lose their spot.
The USMNT now has the quality in the attacking third where there may be a scenario where both Lando and Demps are not starting at the WC.
2tone I said that about Donovan and had everyone jumping on me.. I stated that Donovan is now a bench player at best and Dempsey is getting close to playing left bench right next to him… Both Fabian Johnson and iceman should and will start in 2014… So please again stop saying that Donovan is the face of US soccer because he is not at least not anymore
Wow, his technique is brilliant. He will be a great long term replacement form Dempsey.
Dempsey is now regretting his move to sounders. Its frustrating just watching. This last game @dallas (which they lost), 90% of the passes to dempsey were at his chest or head. Played guys in scotch free twice with great through balls and watched his mates scuff shots. He still has the quality, but beneath the sounders style of play and his injuries its hard to see. Badly needs a winter loan to get back into form.
Btw, johansson, brilliant match. I don’t think we have to worry too much about the 1 or 2 forwards who will start at the world cup. Having multiple options for each game based on the opponent as well as options off the bench is important. Johansson and Altidore willl both play significant minutes, and probably both start at least a game.
Dempsey played Brad Evans in beautifully and he should have finished an easy goal but didn’t. If we are judging Dempsey purely as a goal scorer than he will suffer. He had a decent game against Dallas. Either way, no one should be starting every W.C. game except Bradley. Bringing in Donovan, Dempsey or Johannsson off the bench is a plus any way u look at it.
The 2 that are saying Donovan will be a sub in Brazil are deluded. He’s a key player…
Anyone saying Altidore is not going to the world cup is just silly.
Anyone saying Donovan wont start is just as silly. He’s very much still a key player. In case anyone forgot, he’s also still our top scorer by a LOOOONG ways.
the us is lucky to have such a kid in their squad. Wow the third goal hummmmmmmmmmm
u dont mean to tell me that zusi will start will you??
The challenge will be getting Altidore and Johnasson on the field at the same time. It was a little rough in Panama – expect to see them work and work to try to get that right. Jozy has played better with a partner for the US – they may or may not be the right partners. Donovan, even in his poor games, makes everyone around him better. He’ll start.
Hate to say this but Landon Donovan not starting in Brazil is not a bad idea. Of course Landon will see the field, but Donovan could easily be benched on the wing for Timmy Chandler or Fabian. I’m not saying Landon is not needed, but he’s getting old.
Thanks Gregory, I am saying the same thing.. I respect Donovan and he has been great for us but his time is almost up…
Landon is 31…..not 35. Landon is like the Wayne Gretzky of American soccer. it’s more than just about having the fastest wheels…. from a technical and mental standpoint he is still our best player. he sees the field like no one else… he is still our best passer and until Jozy Altidore scores goals at the World Cup level Donovan is still our best clutch goal scorer
I want Geoff Cameron in the starting lineup but hasn’t Klinsmann already said that he’s not going to play right back? he wants Cameron to win a starting center back job at Stoke otherwise he’ll be coming off the bench. and I don’t think there’s any chance in hell that Jurgen Klinsmann will go with backline of just 3.
Right now, I think Besler/Cameron is our best pairing. They’re very good.
But if we can’t get Cameron in at CB, he should be playing RB (unless Chandler wins the spot back). LB should be Fabian Johnson.
I have like this
Fabian , Johansson, Bedoya
Beasley, Besler, Brooks, Chandler
and Howard of course
Agreed, no way JK goes with 3 in the back. Whats all this Chandler talk? He has rejected call ups & hasn’t played with the USMNT since February. I would be shocked if he earned a WC roster spot at this point.
Like it or not, I think this is our current starting line up.
I don’t love our back line. Can you imagine us drawing Portugal and having the likes of Ronaldo running at Brad Evans. I could definitely see Cameron earning the RB spot in the coming months with the outside shot of Cherundolo getting healthy/fit and earning his spot back. RB is definitely our biggest question mark though.
Also, I LOVE Johansson as much as the next USMNT fan, but he’s definitely not taking Altidore’s spot & Dempsey is in poor form right now, but there’s still 8 months for him to gain it back. It’s Dempsey’s spot to lose.
Ronaldo running at evans… *shudders*
Yeah, Ronaldo (or any of the world class athletes we’re likely to face) running at Evans makes me shudder. I’m much more comfortable with Cameron, Cherundolo, or Chandler there. Apparently your name must start with a C in order to start at RB.
I honestly don’t get all the people leaving Donovan off their XI and Dempsey out of their squad. It’s silly.
Also: Can we please have a talk about wanting to start Beasley over F. Johnson at leftback?
If I had to pick today!!!! Please don’t beat me up as I know Klinsmann has other ideas!!!
Donovan – Johansson – Dempsey
Bradley – Jones
F. Johnson – Cameron – Brooks – Chandler (or Cherundolo if he is ready)
Sorry, but I will pick star USMNT players or Euro players over MLS anytime!
CP–I agree, except I’d swamp Donovan and Johannson’s spots.
Landon will be 32 in Brazil, that’s very old for a winger. Landon has had some big moments but you play for the future. Soccer players bodies break fast.
Please stop making up Chandler controversy, he’s capped tied and no way Jurgen leaves off a healthy Chandler. Chandler is a Bundesliga veteran at age 23 because he is good. No way should Evans ever see the field over a healthy Chandler.
we need replacements for both Beasley and Evans or we wont get out of the group stage. Period.
Dirk nails it. Beasley was an emergency fill in, he should not be a starter at leftback. Same for Evans.
At RB: Cameron, Chandler, or Cherundolo.
At LB: F. Johnson.
Beasley and Jermaine Jones should only be subs in Brazil at best. I like Cameron in JJ’s spot and Fabian in Beasley’s spot. Fabian has no trouble getting up and down the field creating chances on offense and smothering all comers on defense. RB is a big question mark–Cherundolo at worst, Chandler would be okay, seems out of the picture currently. I don’t really like Cameron there. I’m hoping Brooks can get in the mix OR that Gonzo and Besler can grow up fast. Back line is by far the biggest problem on this team as of this moment.
Donovan and Dempsey should clearly both be preferred to start–but we have plenty of talent available to sub them off or give spot starts in their place. Neither have lost a step and both have vision and experience that will be very much needed. We have enough youth and no need to replace them just yet. However, if they prove to be lacking in any way next summer, they should get a quick hook.
