A few links for Friday morning
October 18, 2013 (12:02 AM) by Matt Benson     Email This Post Email This Post

If you missed it yesterday, Will Packwood is going out on loan while Brek Shea could be in the near future.

Will did another goalkeeper review yesterday, this one on Brad Guzan’s game against Panama.

While all the spots haven’t been determined, here is a World Cup draw simulator so you can get an idea of what to expect for the US.  I just got the US in a group with Argentina, Russia and Ukraine.

The American Outlaws now have 100 chapters, so here is a tribute video to all the chapters.

Michael Bradley made Roma’s squad list for today’s game against Napoli.  I doubt he starts, but he is available to play.

John Brooks has also returned to training with Hertha Berlin, although he probably won’t play this weekend against Mönchengladbach.

Continuing with the same theme, Steve Cherundolo has also returned to training with Hannover 96.  Here is a photo of him in action.

Earnie Stewart recently spoke about Aron Johannsson’s decision to play with the USMNT.

Enjoy the weekend.

Switzerland, Algeria, USA, Bosnia. That’s not a horrible group.

We can beat Switzerland, and within the last 3 years we have beaten the other two.

  2. Jerry says:

Not liking this simulation, everytime I run it we’re essentially in the group of death or close to it.

First group I drew: Belgium, US, Ghana Italy
Second group I drew: Uruguay, US, Ghana, France
Third group: Belgium, US, Ghana, Ukraine
Fourth group: Spain, US, Chile, Croatia
Fifth group: Switzerland, US, Chile, Netherlands

I would take the fourth group (and possibly the fifth), but every other group spells trouble.

  3. Bird says:

Due to the Swiss being seeded and possibly France and Portugal both making it via playoffs, I think this WC will have 2 groups of death. Should be interesting.

  4. William says:

    Bird – maybe 3 groups of death…

US have Uruguay, Algeria, Bosnia in my draw. I would take that!!!

  5. Mitch says:

Yep. Pairing CONCACAF with AFC means that the USA and probably Japan are going to end up in so called “Groups of Death”. While it would certainly be nice to end up with a group as easy as last time, playing against top tier competition is always fun.

  6. William says:

It is much more likely that the US draw this:

  7. Ian says:

I got Algeria, England, Spain and the US

Btw does anyone know how Hertha has been doing with Brooks out injured?

  8. Dirk says:

First try I got the group of death.

    Brazil, Netherlands, Nigeria

    2nd try: Uruguay, Russia, Portugal

    Damn, those are both brutal.

Might like our chances a tad more in the 2nd group,

Nigeria would be our “easy” game in that 1st group even though they’re ranked 33 in the world. Netherlands and Brazil, that’s deadly.

I have a feeling we will be in a group of death.

  9. Todd T says:

    I got,

    First try:

    This, is fun, but, meaningless

    Second try:

It is, to early, to start worrying, about this

    Third try:

Hey let’s, enjoy, a very successful, qualification

  10. Tim H. says:

Yikes. My first draw: Argentina, U.S., Russia, and France. Group of death if I ever seen one.

  11. Chris says:

With the simulator you have to remember that some of those spots are still up for grabs, the simulator just shows a best case scenario as far as the quality of teams. For example portugal may possibly be replaced by someone like romania, or senegal going through ahead of the ivory coast. Also, I wouldn’t be too freightened of some european team, they are well known for not traveling too well. Also other than ghana and maybe the ivory coast, africa doesn’t scare me too too much. We just gota cheer for some underdogs in the playoffs, like new zealand, jordan, iceland. With each of those teams going through, the easier our group will be. But we have showed great quality and we can play toe to toe with anyone in the world.

  12. William says:

Chris – I think most fans know what you’re saying. However, you make a great point about cheering for the “underdogs.”

Can’t wait for the EURO draw on Monday!

I’m hoping for a France-Portugal matchup!!! Knowing how the draws usually work out, because of “chance” and certainly not fixing, we will probably see France-Ukraine, Portugal-Iceland, Croatia-Romania, Greece-Sweden.

No matter what though, assuming Portugal nor Croatia isn’t matched up with France or Romania, I think those four teams make it in.

  13. Trent Hill says:

I’d love to see Iceland, Romania, Greece, and Ukraine go through. I’ve no love for France or Portugal.
