A bit of this and a bit of that

Jurgen Klinsmann was supposed to release the roster for the upcoming qualifiers later today, but it now looks like he won’t until this weekend due to injuries.  One thing we do know, Michael Bradley has been officially ruled out due to his ankle injury.  Klinsi also dropped some hints while speaking to the media before Tuesday’s US Open Cup final.

Greg Seltzer thinks outside the box for two possible left back candidates for the USMNT.  Don’t know if I totally agree, but worth a look.

Sacha Kljestan and Anderlecht were beaten 3-0 by Olympiacos in Champions League action on Tuesday.  I am no expert, but it is tough to win Champions League games when the average age of your starting lineup is 22.2 years old.

Herculez Gomez appeared in his first league game since coming back from injury on Tuesday.  He got the start and played 72 minutes in Tijuana’s 2-0 loss to Club América.

Joe Gyau and Fabian Hurzeler both started for Hoffenheim’s U-23 team on Wednesday with Hurzeler scoring two goals in a 4-0 win over Hessen Kassel in the German Regionalliga.  As you can see from our goal tracker, it was Hurzeler’s first goals since May 5.

Former Hoffenheim midfielder Danny Williams spoke to Brian Sciaretta earlier this week about finding his stride at Reading.

Duane Holmes is impressing Huddersfield Town’s fans with his play since making his debut over the last two games.

RJ DeMello caught up with Chukwudi Chijindu to talk about his big goal that saved Thor’s season.

Brian Sciaretta also talked to Nermin Crnkic recently.  Crnkic made some noise with the Michigan Bucks in last year’s US Open Cup and now he is in the Czech Liga.

I know I mentioned it last week, but a new USMNT project for the site should be going up on Sunday night/Monday morning.  Also, we might be relaunching a series that Howie and I did like three years ago that we quit doing for whatever reason.  There might also be some guest writers who participate.  So be on the lookout for that starting next week as well.  Just trying to add some newer stuff to the site.

I always thought landon donovan would make a good fullback. Wouldn’t it be cute if Beasley and Donovan were our starting fullbacks

    @Matt

The J.Jones and Mo Edu at LB was a MLS article, hence it kinda makes no sense.

I think JK would/has put Danny Williams, Lichaj, Chandler, Spector, Rheam, or even a left footed JAB at LB before Edu or Jones.

Really think Edu’s best position is on the bench behind Cameron, J.Jones, and Danny Williams. That’s coming from a Maurice Edu Terrapin fan.

CB or RB makes more sense for Edu or Jones. I thought it was reported JK had Edu at RB for during a camp.

Would like to see J.Jones try CB or RB. Let Cameron take holding mid and try out Jones somewhere else.

  3. Gregory says:

Why is my Github Avatar showing? It did that automatically. lol

Hope JK has fun with the friendlies and plays his elite players everywhere. But please holding midfielders go backwards, not forward. Example J.Jones at CB/RB, not CAM or striker.

Wildcard Timmy Chandler is the only defensive player I would like to see at RM or winger. Chandler at RB paired with Lando at RM could look good.

  4. 2tone says:

I had to laugh when Greg Selzter is saying Edu is left footed just because he has hit a few long range shots for Rangers. Anyone that has watched EDu over the years knows that he is right footed. He passes with his foot, he dribbles with his right foot, and he tackles with his right foot.

And no I do not want to see Edu or Jones at LB. Horrible thought experiment.

  5. Dirk says:

I wonder if Jk won’t bring in Eric Lichaj “because now is not the time to be experimenting”? Yet he experimented with Beasley at LB, Danny Williams at RM, and Brad Evans at RB…but won’t play Lichaj at his natural position. Where is the logic?

  6. Trent Hill says:

I really want to get looks at Chandler/Lichaj at RB and I’m not interested in “experimenting” at LB anymore–give it to Fabian Johnson and find out who we’re going to play at Leftwing (Shea? Zusi? Iceman?)

  7. Trent Hill says:

Naturally F. Johnson is injured. But who replaces him for Hoffenheim? A young, 19 year old, leftback who is German-American. Hell yes.
