John Brooks got the start and went the full 90 mintues in Hertha Berlin’s 1-0 loss to Stuttgart on Friday. Here are some highlights.
Klinsmann may be a lot smarter than me, but it really seems like not bringing Brooks on for a cameo during the Costa Rica game could have been a boneheaded move. Perhaps he told him he would start him in a qualifier once we had clinched or maybe he knows Brooks is 100% committed to the US, but it would have need prudent just to lock him down and move on with life.
If Klinsmann starts Brooks in Costa Rica and the USA loses, Brooks would be a scapgoat like Timmy Chandler.
JK always has to worry about that Bruce Arena effect, that if he loses with foreign players everyone sh%its themselves and thinks Dax McCarty could have done a better job.
I wasn’t saying to start him. I was saying bring him on for the last 5 minutes once we were down 3-1 and cap tie him to the US.
Ian–it may have been pre-arranged that Klinsi wasn’t going to cap him, just bring him in to give him another look at the set-up before capping him next time. Often players want to spend some time in the set-up (and give their home FA a chance to change their minds) before getting tied.
