Dos a Cero (clap clap, clap clap clap).
Now accepting apologies for those who questioned my judgement regarding FJ at rightback
We should all be thankful for set pieces with that non-creative midfield. Wasn’t a game that was much to look at. Mexico was terrible after the first 25 minutes. Team has no guts or will or fight in them.
Bradley get better soon. Love that Mix came in and did well and got a hockey assist.
I’m gonna wish I had five bucks for every time someone says Beckerman was “tidy in possession”. I’m still not impressed with him but I guess I wasn’t really going to be the way the U.S. set out to play. His gait reminds me of a baby hippo fleeing a pride of lions. A win is a win.
Ha. He looked noticeably uncomfortable at RB in my opinion. He’s a quality player though. I also had him penciled in as starting at RB.
I’d actually venture to say that the first 30 minutes were FJ’s most inept 30 minutes of his USMNT career
Dempsey’s lack of form ringing true on the last two pk’s he’s attempted. Anyone who has been a dedicated fan of the USMNT over the last 12 years wants Landon Donovan taking both of those penalties. Most importantly, given the current form of both players as well as their history, I want Landon taking it.
I’ve watched enough Dempsey PKs at Fulham to know that he has never been good at them. They should always be Donovan until he retires.
Yea. Why is Dempsey taking those in the first place…
Fabian was a weakspot tonight at rightback. Looked completely uncomfortable. However, what a great performance. And loved the bounce-back games from Howard, Gonzo, and Jones.
My father suggested that dempsey may have penalty duties because klinsmann is trying to get him back in form
Dempsey is a big boy. He can get himself back into form. Let donovan take a penalty.
I like dempsey better. I think dempseys a better player. But yeah, like matt said, he was never good on penalties.
Howard – A couple of big early saves…he was the balls tonight and set the tone!
Johnson – is not a RB – he is a LB/LW. Terrible mistake putting him there and correctly fixed.
Gonzo – horrible in distribution and was wearing roller skates vs. Dos Santos, but he is good in the air…I’ll give the man his due
Goodson – I commented to my wife (around 35th minute) that I hadn’t noticed him much and that means that his positioning and marking had to be on point…I’m sure they were. He was stellar except for once he lost his mark on set pieces.
Beasley – good grief he is terrible. Completely whiffed and almost scored an own goal??? LOL. I wish his skill matched his heart and motor – if so he would be a world class player.
Beckerman – he did a few things right and great tonight. One of which was that he put his jersey on correctly. I can’t remember the other…
Jones – He was boss. I told my wife before the start that he is useless without Bradley – he proved me wrong big time! Great game other than the stupid slide tackle that led to the Bedoya Yellow
Donovan – I thought he did pretty well for being a cyclops. If he had two eyes I would say he was one of the worst players on the pitch…but he only had one eye…scoring is always a good thing
Dempsey – he was really bad. I love Duece, but he had one of his worst games in a long, LONG time. Hope he gets his crap together
Bedoya – the yellow card was the fault of Jones with his reckless slide tackle. He was solid in possession I thought but didn’t add much in crossing the ball in the box…maybe I’m wrong but I don’t remember much in that dept.
EJ – He was awesome! How much better has he gotten since coming BACK from Europe? Hope he keeps this form for another year or so…
Mix – Quickly forcing some old guys out. He needs to get in the weight room a bit. A bit stronger on the ball and I think he will be in a big league soon.
“I’ve watched enough Dempsey PKs at Fulham to know that he has never been good at them. They should always be Donovan until he retires.”
This. He’s always been bad at them. I suspect he took it because he’s captain and felt like it.
But yes, it should be Donovan or Jozy.
Since everyone is giving their opinions–
Howard: Huge. Lots of people were talking about starting Guzan for this game and he shut that talk down for now. The guy just consistently steps up in the biggest games.
Fabian Johnson: I didn’t say I WANTED him to play rightback, because I’v seen him do it for his club, but I knew it was likely as an emergency situation. Saying he was “just alright” is a bit generous.
Michael Parkhurst: I’ve always been a supporter and he’s never really disappointed me. No, he isn’t good going forward, that isn’t his game. But he’s solid in defense.
Gonzo: Strong in the air and no mistakes. Consistency has been his issue and tonight there were no hiccups.
Goodson: I barely even remember seeing him tonight, which is excellent news. That’s because a.) Gonzo was in beast mode and b.) He is great positionally.
Beasley: He isn’t a leftback. He is, however, speedy and has heart. There’s no easy way to say it: defensive liability. Still, with a leftback pool as small as it is, he is almost definitely second choice.
Jones: He was class tonight. Was absolutely solid in defense and had a really important recovery run (and tackle) to prevent a go-ahead goal.
Beckerman: I love how he slows the game down in possession. But that’s where my compliments end. As a destroyer he isn’t all that effective and as a passer he most often creates dangerous 50/50 situations or just plain passes it off to the other team.
Mix: What can you say about that chipped-turn? Sublime. And keeping the cross low and fast–just perfect.
Donovan: Went missing for small spells, but was particularly impressed with his pressing and his off the ball runs. Goal and an assist speaks for itself.
Dempsey: Missing for much larger spells and missed the penalty. Bad night for Deuce.
Bedoya: Worked hard, as he always does. Had a few good runs, but like Dempsey–went missing too much.
Zusi: Too small a cameo to judge on.
EJ: He consistently impresses against CONCACAF nations. We know that. Now lets try him out against a Japan/Ghana/Bosnia and see what happens.
Klinsi: Wonderful. Great subs, decent line-up.
Howard: Great game after a suspect game in Costa Rica.
Fabian Johnson: the last time I saw this guy play this poorly it was over 80 Degrees. How hot was it in Columbus? that was awful save for one run.
Michael Parkhurst: great half, I have never seen this guy have a bad game. I’ve got no problem having him run out at RB.
Gonzo: Distribution out of the back was LACKING, accept for one nice pass. Strong in the air(I know it has been said numerouse times already) but Jones SAVED his arse with that covering run.
Goodson: Well done. But like Gonzo, too many 50 yard bombs out of bounds while in possession and errant passes into the middle of the field.
Beasley: Yeah, he isnt playing his best position, we get it. He is soccer “old”. I don’t care. we dont have a better option and we also have not been abused down the left side while he was on the pitch. Going forward he has speed, and ellusiveness and opens up the defense. Underappreciated.
Jones: great final 60minutes. but that first 30 was starting out to be a replay of Costa Rica. TOO MANY BS passes and give aways. great recovery.
Beckerman: Well done, as asked for. I get the impression that he does not see the field very well when the opponent is playing with speed. In possession his view of the field is like he is wearing blinders.
Mix: what did he get? 20Min? Awesome as soon as he steped on the field.
Donovan: I hear that he went missing? He was all over the field. He was fantastic. When the game was getting hectic and out of control did anyone notice who stepped on the ball and got them under control? Did you see his runs with the ball? Did you see his passes to the feet of his teammates? Did you notice the quality of his crosses? Did you see the timing of his run on his goal? or his covering for his fullback that had just made a run? HE CAN NOT POSSESS THE BALL FOR 90 MINUTES and race from the left side of the pitch to the right side of the pitch to get camera time!
Dempsey: EFFING AWFUL! not missing! Awful, and uninspired. I love this player, I HATE watching him get knocked over, lose possession and BITCH! I don’t care if the rest of Europe and SA does it. I HATE THAT GUTLESS GAME. I HATE that my favorite player resorts back to it at times. Too good to play that poorly.
Bedoya: Good game, good in possession, great in recovery. Well done.
EJ: Alway nervous with EJ, but this was a good offensive game. Hell he played really well. His first touch is the one that kills me, beyond that I think he is an exciting player.
Klinsi: I like Klinsi. I dont know enough to be critical of a coach. I like his emotion. I liked his selections, I would have like to have seen Arron Johanson take over for Dempsey for the final 30. But maybe that is me being a fan and not tactical or politcally correct.
It is so funny let’s just take a moment.
FJ at right was a cover that made sense on paper and he had an off night. FJ is better than any outside back in the pool period(except a healthly Dolo)…and aside from Donovan he is the best LM that we have.
Jones did what he had to…when he plays within himself he is a must start.
Beckerman did what he always does and gets no love for it.
Howard did fine but never really was tested. Guzan and Rimando would have made the same saves. He will get the start in Brazil because of experience and talent. Guzan is as good and maybe be better at times. He is going to be the goalie for the next cup.
Mexico was terrible and this game is not any more a measuring stick then the loss to Costa Rica.
Finally, Klinsi gets more things right then he gets wrong. Give the man or at least his staff(if you are Philipp Lahm)some credit. The next two qualifiers are going to to be fun. Results largely don’t matter…who will get called in from the fringe??? Lichaj, Sasha, Gatt, O’Brien…Freddy Adu. Okay, Adu was me just being silly!!!!
Howard wasn’t really tested? Come on dude, he had four big saves – one of which was from Beasley. And yes, Guzan maybe makes those saves but give Howard at least some credit.
What exactly did Beckerman do that he didn’t get love for? Jones bossed the MF, not Beckerman.
Finally Klins gets more things right then wrong? Surely you can tell a difference in possession, offensive prowess and player development from years past?
I agree with you that the next two qualifiers will be fun and hopefully we get to see a few young players, but damnit – you still have to develop team chemistry so you should expect the majority of A-team guys called in and playing.
I wish the US would stop hiring people to sing the national anthem, and just let the crowd sing with the music
I didn’t say that Howard played poorly. He is a very good keeper that runs the defense well…that is why he is a starter. He made a couple of good saves for sure.
Trent said, “Lots of people were talking about starting Guzan for this game and he shut that talk down for now.” I do not think he did anything world class last night…he made 3 saves according to ESPN(I actually thought he made more.) I believe that those saves could have been made by either Guzan or Rimando…because they are both very good keepers as well. At times Howard makes world class saves and at times he is timid.
Compare Guzan’s and Howards EPL numbers for last year…and you will see that they are even or even slightly in Guzan’s favor. And Guzan did it with a terrible back line. With all that said I think Howard is the number one but not because he was “out of this world last night.”
Beckerman is the “Rodney Dangerfield” of US Soccer. A consistent player who defends first, works hard and keeps possession. You know what you are going to get with him. He is not a superstar on the national team but more of a role player. He comes in and does his work. As for what he did right according to you was to “put his shirt on”. After that he went out on the field and tried to fill the shoes of the best player on our team…but he didn’t try to play outside himself. He should be respected because he stepped onto a field with against a team that should have hurt us last night but for some reason didn’t. I am certainly not saying that he was responsible for Mexico’s lack of cohesion…but he didn’t do anything that led to any real chance for Mexico either. So give him some credit.
I am not sure that I understand your comment about Klinsi. I do think we play with more possession, offensive prowess and have better players. Even playing with so many players out last night we still had %48 possession(again according to ESPN…and again I thought we had less). Which I imagine is better than before Klinsi was hired?
Finally your last point…no I do not expect a January camp type roster and probably nobody on my list except maybe Lichaj(if the right back situation doesn’t get clarified). I expect that he will bring in roughly the same 23 but will give Aron Jóhannsson a start/(45 minutes second half), JAB(same) and maybe Mix as well. Because damnit-these will be real games that mean something to the other teams and therefor are great learning experiences for players. In the end mean nothing to us.
If you had said it makes a difference to the FIFA rankings and that will give us a chance to get in the first pool of seven. I would say you are delirious because we are never going to get there. I also know you are too smart(being serious) to even suggest such a thing.
“Fabian Johnson: the last time I saw this guy play this poorly it was over 80 Degrees. How hot was it in Columbus? that was awful save for one run.”
It was very hot and humid in Columbus last night. He DOES seem to struggle with hot weather, as does Jones. This will likely be an on-going problem with our European-raised players (Jones, Johnson, Boyd, and Johannson).
“Howard wasn’t really tested? Come on dude, he had four big saves – one of which was from Beasley. And yes, Guzan maybe makes those saves but give Howard at least some credit.”
Agreed. Howard was big–that’s why most are calling him MotM. Guzan might’ve made the same saves, sure. But don’t take that away from Howard.
Michael Parkhurst–I am surprised by how few people notice him. Guy has been SO solid in defense every time he’s been on the field.
Glad other people noticed the bright spots in Lando and Jones’ game. Both made great covering runs at times.
Todd T–I don’t think we’re going to get into Pool 1. But I think that should be the goal at any rate. Right now we’re probably sitting in Pool 3 area, so maybe we can get into Pool 2 and avoid a group of death.
I wasn’t saying that Howard didn’t play well, nor did I say he isn’t a very good keeper. I do give him credit he is the number one keeper and deserves it…BUT last night didn’t change the fact that Guzan is breathing down his neck. I believe that Howard has more experience and commands more respect from the USMNT players that he is the obvious number one.
Here are two articles from ASN that I thought were interesting.
I agree with you about Landon’s play on the left. I like it so much a I would rather see him there and push FJ to left back and let Bedoya/Zusi fight it out for the right side.
I also agree that the last two games should be used to put our stamp on the qualifying process. Klinsi says that the US lacks a killer instinct. The desire to put the cleats in the throat of the opposing teams…but I will bet 20 imaginary soccer over there dollars that he is going to use it to look at AJ, JAB and different combinations.
PS I now realize why ESPN had Howard down for 3 saves…they didn’t count the Beasley shot.
PSS ASN supports your claim that Howard was the best player in the game.
I owe an apology to Trent …. But I am suspecting that Trent is really Jurgen Klisman in disguise… Lol… Good win from us… Can’t wait to see us in brazil..
Cam, totally agree, having a singer is so stupid. Play the music standing alone, as a national anthem should be and as FIFA does at actual competitions. I hate hate hate bringing out some random individual and hearing them turn o’er into for and eviscerate the music at their whim.
“I agree with you about Landon’s play on the left. I like it so much a I would rather see him there and push FJ to left back and let Bedoya/Zusi fight it out for the right side.”
Yes. Or put Dempsey at rightwing, Bedoya in the attacking spot. Or shift Dempsey/Bedoya to the right and play two true strikers (AJ next to Jozy).
“I owe an apology to Trent …. But I am suspecting that Trent is really Jurgen Klisman in disguise… Lol… Good win from us… Can’t wait to see us in brazil..”
If I were Klinsman, we’d have capped Brooks on Friday night and plays AJ for the final 20 last night. Thanks though.
Great pod about the game and not because they make many of the same points I made above…okay maybe a little bit.
