So I kind of thought last night’s #DempseyWatch had fizzled out. I go for a run after work, stop to get myself a burrito on the way back, and check my phone.
And this was basically me.
Clint Dempsey, captain of the US national team, scorer of 62 Premier League goals, owner of Fulham’s Premier League scoring mark and three OT XI MVPs, will be playing in MLS this fall.
In what I’m going to call the most shocking transfer in American soccer history, Seattle will pay Tottenham a reported $9M fee and Dempsey $32M over four years to make Deuce probably one of the three* biggest signings in league history.
Many will be disappointed to see Dempsey trade awesomeness in Europe for awesomeness in the Pacific Northwest. It’s a little surprising given Jürgen Klinsmann’s previous statements on seeing players challenge themselves at the highest level; of course, Klinsmann’s opinion on MLS generally seems to have changed.
So, yeah. React away.
*- I’d put him behind Thierry Henry and David Beckham. You could probably argue a case for guys like Hristo Stoichkov, Cuauhtémoc Blanco, and Rafa Marquez.
