Sort of a pre-game primer & links thing

The US has its last Gold Cup group stage game tomorrow against Costa Rica at 8 PM Eastern on Fox Soccer.  The US can win Group C with a win or draw and would likely face Martinique in the quarterfinals.  A loss would match them against Honduras in the quarterfinals.

Here are the official US Soccer game notes.  The US is 12-12-6 all-time against Costa Rica, although hold a 5-0-1 mark against the Ticos in the Gold Cup.  Landon Donovan is the only player on the current roster with a goal against Costa Rica.  And the last player to score on Costa Rica was Clint Dempsey during the Snow Clasico in March.  Costa Rica has gone 704 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal.  Hopefully that ends today.

Grant Wahl was at today’s press conference and gave us some goodies.  Jurgen Klinsmann plans on using his best squad instead of experimenting with lineups with a quarterfinal slot already in hand.  He also thinks Chris Wondolowski will start since he usually brings a starter to the pre-game press conference and Wondo was there on Monday.  And Klinsi decided to troll the Costa Rica fans.

US Soccer’s YouTube channel gives us the latest video on Tony Beltran.  And equipment manager Jesse Bignami instagrammed this great photo from today’s training.

I did a bunch of numbers and facts on Sunday about the USMNT and Wondo’s great run of play as of late.  Elias also added a couple things on Wondo.

Grant Wahl confirmed the game time for September’s World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica.  It will be on September 6 at 8 PM Eastern on BeIN Sport.

The injury bug hit on Monday.  First we heard that Fabian Johnson picked up an ankle injury.  Hopefully he should return by the end of the week.  Then the horrible news about Josh Gatt being out for the rest of the Norwegian season due to an upcoming knee surgery.  Then late in the day, I found out that Jonathan Spector fractured his right cheekbone during a behind-closed-doors training match against MK Dons last week.

I did some cleaning up of our goal tracker last night.  Found some more goals of guys in lower leagues that we missed.  Plus I found a couple decent YouTube channels with Finnish league highlights, so I linked a few more goals that we were missing.  If you ever find a highlight or know we are missing a goal, please let us know.

Terrence Boyd and Rapid Vienna were already knocked out of the Austrian Cup on Sunday in penalties to Shawn Barry and LASK Linz.  Boyd came off the bench and made his penalty, while Barry went the full 120 minutes of Linz.

Also over the weekend, Bobby Wood continues his strong push for playing time/starting spot with an assist in 1860 Munich’s 2-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen.  Here are some highlights, including Wood’s assist around the 1:40 mark.

While some reports came out last week that Tottenham transfer-listed Clint Dempsey, his agent says that he is not being shopped around.  And I don’t know if I posted this last week or not, but Dempsey was second on Tottenham only to Gareth Bale in fewest minutes played across all competitions per goals+assists.

A few more links to add about Jozy Altidore’s move to Sunderland.  I know there has been some discussion in our comments about how many goals would equal success in people’s eyes for Jozy, but Greg Seltzer is guessing 12 goals in league play for Altidore in 2013-14.  If you can understand the accents, here are some Sunderland fans commenting on Sunderland’s moves, including Jozy.  And here is short video interview with Altidore.

Everton have signed 23-year-old goalkeeper Joel Robles and Roberto Martinez has “warned” Tim Howard that he has to fight for his starting spot.

And staying with goalkeepers, Caleb Patterson-Sewell talked to Andy Schreur about his move to Gil Vicente.

I haven’t done a shameless plug roundup in a while so here I go.  Are you following me on Twitter?  How about Howie or Jon?  Did you also know that we are on Facebook and you can “like” us?  So do that now.  And you should probably also buy one of our Sacha Kljestan mustache shirts.  They are great and only $20 (That is including shipping too!  So you can just tell yourself that the shirt is only really $15).

Speaking of Twitter, I asked for some new music suggestions and a bunch of people told me some things to check out.  Some of the ones that I have listened to so far and liked include Bonbo and Chvrches.  Yay for social media!

I have a stuffed Saprissa mascot sitting on my entertainment center. Is it bad karma to leave up for this match? Discuss.

  2. CC says:

Any chance you could include more regular coverage of what Freddy Adu is up to (or not up to)? Or have you all given up on him too?

  3. Alex says:

Have to see the Giaccherini signing as a good sign for Jozy. Shows Di Canio’s intent as well as the possibility that he will enjoy more quality service than we were expecting. Hopefully a lineup with Sessegnon, Giaccherini, and Johnson in good form will get Jozy into double digit goals.

Howie: cast voodoo curses on it and then repeatedly poke it in the belly during the match.

Win or draw and we are guaranteed to play Martinique, I’m pretty sure

Haway the lads! If you can understand their accent… haha I remember meeting the Sunderland u18s, in one of their games a mexican-american kid fouled and was complaining to the refs. Listening to the nor’esterners do a mock cholo accent (think spanglish meets cali meets ebonics) was one of the funniest moments of my life.

  5. Gregory says:

I hope Beckerman going 90 minutes last game means Mix and Holden start in midfield.

  6. Matt says:

CC, there is nothing to report on Adu. He either dresses and doesn’t play or he doesn’t dress for Bahia.
