As we posted this morning, Tony Taylor scored a goal in a friendly yesterday, a 3-1 win over Xanthi Skoda.  And here is footage of Taylor’s goal.

I can’t tell if that first touch is awful or brilliant.

^awful, the dish and run was good and he put the ball in the net, everything in between ehhhh. It was a very difficult ball to control, I think the defender may have just got a toe to it before it arrived.
I hope the cypriot league puts up more stringent defending than that for taylor.

  3. Trent Hill says:

In this league, if Hoyos can net 15+ goals, he could get a move to a bigger league and get on the USMNT radar.

Its not that easy. Cyprus is 8 teams. Its very top heavy, and continental scouts know that. Taylor’s quantity of goals will matter not, he will have by my count 15 games to show himself: 6 regular season fixtures (AEL, APOEL, Anorthisis) 6 games in the final champions group round (4 top teams) and any europa league matches he gets.

Cyprus is not scouted much by the continent at all. It is notorious as a career graveyard of promising african and south american players. Really the only stepping stones out of Cyprus are the Balkans (think Partizan, Maribor, Xanthi) and West Asia (israel or the gulf, though no american has played in a gulf league). This was a brave career move by Taylor if he is honest when saying he hopes for senior caps.

I’m rooting for him, but I think realistically he will not be in the picture for another 2-3 years at the earliest. This is a critical year for him, nonetheless, he has to bag a bunch of goals and get out of cyprus to anywhere.

  5. Trent Hill says:

To be fair–isnt it only a loan? If so, that’s not so bad. If it’s a sale, maybe he’s hoping to be able to make the move to Israel/Balkans or use the European games to get in the shop window.

I agree on all other counts–I know it isnt a huge shop window in Cyprus. I also agree it could be a couple years before he gets on the radar. That’s ok, because he is young.

  6. daniil says:

He signed with omonia on a free transfer after estoril didn’t renew his contract.

  7. Todd T says:

Wow that first touch was……………………………………………………………………………….crap yeah that’s what it was ….just terrible.
