Jozy Altidore is already scoring at Sunderland & other links
July 11, 2013 (12:01 AM) by Matt Benson     Email This Post Email This Post

Jozy Altidore officially became a member of Sunderland on Monday.  And on Tuesday, he was with the team in Italy and scoring a goal in a preseason friendly.  Here is a photo of Jozy from that game.  And here is a story from Sunderland’s website with some quotes from Altidore about signing with the team.

While Jozy has scored four goals in his last four games with the USMNT, Chris Wondow…..I mean Wondolowski has scored four in his last two games.  And in a cool story, Drew Carey donated some money to two charities in order to buy the “Wondowlowski” jersey.

Jurgen Klinsmann told the press after Tuesday’s game that he did not start Stuart Holden, Oguchi Onyewu or Herculez Gomez due to their prior knee injuries and the turf field at Jeld-Wen Field.

US Soccer has added two videos to their YouTube channel this week, field-level highlights from last Friday’s game against Guatemala and a video of Holden breaking down his first career USMNT goal from 2009.

While Jozy is no longer at AZ Alkmaar, here is what Aron Johannsson and AZ will be wearing next year.  Some interesting collars.

Tony Taylor scored another goal for AC Omonia in a preseason friendly against Xanthi Skoda on Tuesday.  Taylor scored last week against Hapoel Tel Aviv and here are highlights from that game (Taylor’s goal is around the 9:40 mark).

Bryan Gerzicich is now at Hapoel Tel Aviv and Brian Sciaretta got some quotes from him about the move.  Sciaretta also talked to Diego Chavarri about his loan move to Iran.

Here is a story from a local Reading paper on Danny Williams.  It also includes this photo of him from training.

The Daily Mail (yeah, I know) is saying Maurice Edu will be making a permanent move back to Bursaspor.  Edu played in only one league game for Stoke City in 2012-13 before going out on loan to Bursaspor and appearing in 11 league games before ending the season with an injury.

Seb Hines hasn’t been participating with Middlesbrough’s preseason as he continues to rehab from knee surgery.

While he likely won’t play much with Bayern Munich’s senior team during the season, Julian Green continues to see the field with the first team during the preseason.

Michael Hoyos is headed to Greece to play with OFI this upcoming season on a season-long loan.  He also wants to play for the US.

Tyler Ruthven is no longer with IK Brage in Sweden.

Want some news on some youth players?  Emerson Hyndman, FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman’s grandson, has signed an extension with Fulham.  And US U-18 midfielder Omar Thompson has signed a professional contract with Wigan Athletic.

Interesting news about Hoyos wanting to be called up. Remember, he is only 21. He could still be a decent get. Interested to see how he does in Greece.

  2. Jerry says:

I don’t know how to effectively get some of the better German Americans to pick the United States over Germany. Personally, I would couch it in the potential marketing a star US player could achieve by representing the US and a club like Bayern Munich. I can only imagine how much of a boon Dempsey and Bradley have been for Spurs and Roma here in the states in terms of new fans and kit sales. Imagine a USMNT playing for Bayern Munich or United?

  3. Kyle #2 says:

“Altidore marked his debut with a goal, cleverly bringing the ball down on the edge of the box and turning his man before hitting the ball across the keeper and into the bottom corner”

    Sounds about right.

  4. Gregory says:

    Little over/under fun.

How many goals does Altidore need to start Arsenal, Tottenham, or Liverpool transfer rumors?

How many for Man U or Chelsae rumors?

  5. Jerry says:

14 goals with 8 assists leads to Arsenal, Spurs, and Liverpool.

20 goals and any assists leads to everyone including United and Chelsea.

  6. Jerry says:

No idea why Spurs didn’t go for him given how cheap he was, I thought it would’ve been cool if he ended up at Swansea with Bony as well.

  7. Todd T says:

@Jerry how many goals Does Jozy have to score to make people think moving to Sunderland was a good idea. What is the least number of goals Jozy could score before people would start saying that he is lazy, terrible as a hold up striker and his first touch is “shite”!

  8. Todd T says:

Please note the sarcasm intended above!!!

  9. Gregory says:

    @Tod T

How many EPL games does Brek Shea have to play this year before it leaks out that he’s a headcase or his transfer was a mistake? I say 7.

  10. Ian says:

Someone posted this on Ives’ website. Hyndman scores a hat trick. He’s the short one for Fulham.

  11. Trent Hill says:

If Jozy bags 10 this year, that’ll be a successful first year. Would be much happier seeing 15+ though.

  12. daniil says:

A 1:4 strikerate would be a success, so if he playes every game 10 league goals. He won’t though, id be happy with 7. We’ll see what kind of service the cats can get him. Anything more than 10 goals and a top-half sunderland finish will get his name on rumour mills I think.

  13. Trent Hill says:

    Daniil pretty much nailed it.

15 goals and 5 assists and we could see a big move.
