The US U-20 team opened up the 2013 U-20 World Cup with a 4-1 loss to a pretty good Spain team. The US’s defending wasn’t particularly good, but Luis Gil’s goal was nice.
at least Gil’s goal was a nice one #brightside
For me these youth tournaments purpose is finding the few players that will make the jump to the USMNT. And in Gil and Yedlin the USMNT could have future stars. In Yedlins case he may very well be heading to the USMNT sooner rather than later.
Gil and Yedlin both looked very good in this match. Big stage, hopefully some big club scouts were taking notes. Gil particularly seemed to have that extra bit of technical quality.
Never watched Yeldin, I have heard good things about him, I hope he’s actually good and not just more cool hair hype.
This scoreline doesn’t reflect how well we played. 3-1 or 2-0 would’ve been more accurate. Spain caught us on the counter each time.
We were playing Torre and Stanko as centerbacks, neither of whom usually play there. Our first, second, and third choice centerbacks were injured or suspended. So, no surprise that the defense was weak.
We were very good going forward and very composed on the ball. At halftime we had 51% of the possession. No, that isn’t a typo.
I’ll add to the list that people have already pointed out in Yedlin and Gil, who are standouts, that Cuevas is VERY good. So is Benji Joya. We’ll be seeing more of both. Alonso Hernandez was injured, but he played well prior to that.
A couple comments as ive been following this team a lot this year-
1. Torre is actually a CB just not a very good one
2. Ocegueda struggled quite a bit today but did show some class previously
3. Joya is a very good player, but he is not a center mid, hes a winger, that would be like saying oh brek shea play some box to box mid, its just not gona happen
4. Gil and Yedlin were very sharp, big futures there
Guys we honestly played better than Spain for most of the game.. Obviously looking at the end score you wouldn’t believe it but Spain just did well on the counter attacks… I would bet my car that if we had packwood and jab we would have won this game… This team has real talent and I would not be surprise if we make a deep run in this tournament ..
agreed jaime, we did really control the game, but we didnt take our chances well at all, especially the one on one with hernandez and the ball joya missed to villarreal
El Salvador is on today and I did a little research to see if they have many Arturo Alvarez-type players and 5 or 6 of them are American-eligible (for whatever that’s worth). VAMO VAMO EL SALVADOR
