US U-20 vs. Mexico Highlights
   March 3, 2013 (8:34 PM) by Matt

It was tied up after 90 minutes, but Mexico scored two goals in the extra 30 minutes to win 3-1 and claim the 2013 CONCACAF U-20 Championship.  A nice run by the US U-20ers.   Daniel Cuevas, Wil Trapp and Jose Villarreal were all named to the all-tournament team.  Here are the highlights.

I’m not super pissed because I consider this a World Cup qualifying tournament and we qualified, but there were 2 no-doubt-about-it penalties that weren’t called and a borderline red card tackle. Also, the amount of play acting and rolling around on the ground, especially from the Mexican players, was nauseating. I did enjoy the pace and openness of the game and thought the US was slightly better. Can someone tell me what the red card for the US player was for at the end if the game? I was at a bar with no volume.

P.S. There’s no way Trapp should be on the all-tournament team.

  2. Matt says:

They didn’t show it as it happened (I think the camera was still on another player who was on the ground), but once they showed the replay, O’Neill pulled the guy down with the back of his jersey from behind. It was a good call by the ref. I was surprised that Cropper didn’t get a card for punting the ball while arguing after it.

  3. Trent Hill says:

Cropper should’ve gotten carded. O’Neill did and deserved it.

But yes, we deserved two no-doubt-about-it penalties. USA really should’ve won. Im not mad, though, USA qualified.

  4. Trent Hill says:

Also: consider that some of our top U-20 players didnt make the trip and several more went home after qualifying was achieved.

  5. Jerry says:

Not surprising the US got jobbed by a CONCACAF officiating crew once again. Mexico should be ashamed of themselves because they know who really won that game/rugby match.

I wonder how much of it plays into the ref already having given a penalty and not wanting to feel weird giving a team more than one or not wanting to be accused of match fixing or whatever. I’m sure we didn’t have the cream of the officiating crop for this tournament, and we qualified and then gave a pretty much full strength mexico team a run with a really depleted team of our own

On a longer term note though, I think a game that can be described as a rugby match should be one that the usa is gonna win. What we have now as a program was built through heart and grit. I know klinsi is trying to ‘refine’ the american game and I can see how ramos might also favor a more technical approach. Is that how the usmnt gonna be 20 years down the road?

  7. Todd T says:

I see Klinsi’s vision of possession football being more present in the U-20′s. During the game they(the anouncers) talked about how the US chose a smaller more controled style players and that would be a negative for set pieces. In doing so they at least seemed to have ideas and technical ability above the present full MNT. I know that is a strecth but if we were to look at the teams(U-20′s) in the past…(like the ones the current Senior Mens team played on…yes I know there might be exceptions) this team really seemed to have more balance and better ability. It is exciting…but just how many of these players of this team will go onto the the full Men’s Team will remain to be seen. I hope Fox puts U20 WC games on because they are fun to watch and we seem to be more likely to make an impact there then on the bigger stage.

  8. William says:

The game was an absolute blast to watch…especially the 1st half. Concacrap refs absolutely suck, nothing to see here.

The play-acting is embarrassing and players should be suspended after the fact. This SHOULD NOT be part of the game as so many like to excuse this hanus action.

The US with a healthy Packwood, Pelosi and Cuevas would’ve been a serious force this summer. Oh well.
