CONCACAF is crazy and some other links
February 7, 2013 (12:33 AM) by Matt Benson     Email This Post Email This Post

If the World Cup was decided after one game of the Hex (sounds like a reasonable qualification process!), both the US and Mexico would be sitting on the outside.  While the US lost 2-1 in a pretty flat and depressing effort, Mexico tied Jamaica, 0-0, at Azteca, while Costa Rica needed a late goal from Bryan Ruiz to draw with Panama 2-2.  Here are the Hex standings after one game.

I don’t want to link to every depressing recap, but Noah Davis got a quote from Tim Howard which pretty much sums everything up from today.

“They were a much better team than us today. We looked flat.”

Sunil Gulati spoke to some reporters before the game to talk about future qualifier venues and some other things.

Moving on to some other links.

After leaving a reserve game last week after a rough tackle, Stuart Holden went 90 minutes in a closed-doors scrimmage at Euxton on Tuesday.

Brondby has avoided bankruptcy, so Clarence Goodson will get a paycheck for the rest of this season.

Fresh off a Jemal Johnson sighting at Arlesey Town last week, he will trial with the NASL’s Tampa Bay Rowdies.

US Soccer Development Academy product Cameron Thomas is headed to Germany to play with VfL Osnabruck’s U-19 team for the rest of the season.

In the dual citizens currently playing for other countries department, French-American Maki Tall scored two goals for France’s U-18 team.  And American–born Salvadoran Dustin Corea has signed with Skive IK in Denmark, the same club that signed American RJ Allen last week.

I am headed out of town this weekend, so the posting might be a little light on my end, but David should have the Weekend Commentary thread going.

We look “flat” way too often. Critiquing what happens is easy, but I saw everyone taking the easiest, shortest passes. Countless times Bradley and the rest of the midfielders would have a guy streaking down the flank on a run only to be overlooked(or not seen) for a simple pass. I wan’t more risk and creativity in attack. If not, let’s go back to Bob Bradley Style: 10 guys behind the ball and counter-attack.

  2. Thursby says:

With the two other draws, the loss did not hurt us that much. But we need to step up our game.

I’m a little concerned about the rest of our games though. Obviously panama has a lot of talent up top, mexico is mexico, but panama and jamaica looked pretty good last night too. The good news is panama appears to own a lawnmower. So we shouldn’t have to worry about pitch conditions again save for in kingston.

  4. daniil says:

*that first panama is meant to be a costa rica

I said it back at the draw. This is the toughest Hex ever and qualifying will be a major feat in and off itself. Concacaf is getting MUCH stronger and largely due to MLS. Concacaf >>>>>>>>>>> AFC, Oceania and if CAF didn’t have so many countries I would say it is on par with them…but I think it is close.

I’m just hoping for 4th and a home-home with New Zealand

  6. Jeffrey says:

    BRING ON NEW ZEALAND!!!

  7. daniil says:

Idk guys, new zealand isn’t going to the confeds cup that’s tahiti, don’t rule out those pesky new caledonians either :p

  8. chris says:

we should really be finishing at least second out of this group, and we are just as good as mexico so qualifying shouldnt be an issue but the hex is difficult. The game against costa rica is a must win game period.

  9. Trent Hill says:

If we finish 4th, I’ll be pretty disappointed. We should be finishing at least 2nd in this group, challenging for 1st.

  10. Piaggio says:

Chris, it would be epic if New Caledonia could make it that far into qualifiers, but they are basically out by now. NZ only needs a tie on the next FIFA date to secure the playoff spot with something like 3 games to be played.

  11. William says:

Danill – I checked and New Caledonia lost to NZ at home. Tahiti is mathematically eliminated and I don’t see Caledonia beating NZ in Auckland all the while making up the GD.

  12. daniil says:

Well that’s mildly dissappointing. shouldn’t matter, we’ve got to win games at home, we won’t finish 4th.

  13. Justin says:

Difference in Hex from 4 years ago: way stronger. Jamaica and Panama replace T and T and El Salvador. Tougher stuff.

  14. Gregory says:

Jamaica is a lot stronger after they reloaded with English born players.

  15. William says:

Yes, yes and yes – to the three posts above this one.
