dempsey_1

Good Day to you all and welcome to our special Mid-Week Commentary.  We have enough action going on today and a number of American Players involved with their teams in England, Germany and Belgium and others. As usual, please participate with chat and opinions. There is a lot of stuff going on out there, controversy following yesterday’s game in Holland, transfer rumors and speculation as well as last night snooze-fest in Houston. So let’s hear from you as I keep the scores and news up to date.

  1. 2tone says:

One week from today WCQ starts in San Pedro Sula. The USMNT better be ready to play. Deuce, MB90, Jozy, and Howard need to bring their “A” game.

  2. 2tone says:

No more overrelying on Donovan now. Lets see if the team can show themselves capable without one of my favorite players of all time Lando.

  3. David says:

Trent Hill, forgive me my ignorance, I don’t really follow the Galaxy. Donovan has had the opportunity to go to Everton (short loan) twice and taken it. If Everton had asked this year would he not have said yes again? I thought that it was Donovan that dissed the idea this year? Like I said I don’t really follow this…..but all that aside I would like to see Donovan in the EPL for a full season, especially if it re-vitalizes his play for the US, Everton is the obvious choice (Donovan’s history) and with a lack of cash for Moyes to get players. England’s transfer window will close tomorrow, but MLS is open till April – maybe its not to late for a loan move, if Galaxy/MLS are willing.

  4. 2tone says:

I think Chandler, Bradley, and Fabian Johnson will be key to the USMNT either getting a win or a point at San Pedro Sula

  5. David says:

Samsminiarmy, yes, almost certainly. Jozy is on a fire right now, and I am sure that pretty much every big $ club is watching.(just check out the top goal scorer’s around Europe right now) If he can keep up the pace, and perform for the USMNT, he will undoubtedly move this summer

  6. David says:

Anderlecht have won their Semi Final cup match v Genk 1 – 0
Of course we are dealing with Belgium :) and the Semi-finals
are a home/away series. Next game Anderlecht will visit Genk on 2nd March with a 1 – 0 aggregate lead.

  7. David says:

2tone, can’t argue those three..just hope that Fabian is match fit. Hopefully he starts on Saturday, and we get to see. Really looking forward to seeing Chandler play again, he can really create a problem for the opposition, not used to seeing the US exercise this attacking system with him in place.

  8. David says:

    OK some score updates;

Liverpool have gone 2 up at the Emirates – I am sure that Rogers is now the savior and calls will increase to fire Wenger

Norwich still lead Tottenham, Spurs are slowly beginning to take hold of this game – expect a Dempsey goal soon :)

    Everton still lead WBA 2 – 0

    Other games
Barca have broken the ice, thank god for Fabregas..Barca in need of a goalscorer :)

Fulham and West Ham are exchanging goals like crazy 2 – 1 Fulham 53rd min.

Mata has scored for Chelsea over Reading 1 – 0

  9. David says:

    WOW Arsenal

2 goals in 2 minutes and its all tied up

    Arsenal 2 – 2 Liverpool

  10. David says:

West Brom get one back at Everton (70)

    Everton 2 – 1 WBA (70)

Everywhere is suddenly going goal crazy!!!!

  11. David says:

2tone, Honduras beat Canada 8 – 1. If Klinsmann can’t get the USMNT to bring its A game on the 6th, the call from the fans will be for JK to step down!

  12. David says:

Dempsey replaced by Holtby 71st minute – don’t like that move from AVB at all

  13. 2tone says:

Here is my 23 man roster now:

    Dolo will be out.

    GK: Sean John, Howard, Guzan
Defense: Chandler, Parkhurst, Castillo, Fabian, Cam, Gonzo, Besler, Boca
    CM’s: Bradley, Beckerman, Jones, Kljestan
    AM’s: Gatt, Zusi, Feilhaber, Corona
    FWDS: Deuce, EJ, Jozy, Gomez

Williams gets left off because he has been warming the bench lately.

  14. 2tone says:

Well, it looks like Deuce has some competition now. Don’t know why a coach would pulling your hottest striker right now though. Seems strange.

  15. David says:

    2tone: AVB > Overrated

  16. David says:

    OK scores

Tottenham tie things up – Bale

    Norwich 1 – 1 Tottenham (84)

    Reading 0 – 2 Chelsea (71)

  17. David says:

    2tone, let me digest your 23 :)

  18. David says:

2tone, OK GK’s Howard, Guzan is a given I think.

Sean v Bill – (IMHO)I think that JK played Sean last night because he is on the cusp. He certainly didn’t do anything dumb last night, but it wasn’t a game that challenged either. I think Hamid gets the call. (take into account I’m from DC :) )

  19. David says:

    Final scores from EPL

Norwich 1 – 1 Tottenham (all Lewis Holtby did was get a yellow)
    Everton 2 – 1 WBA
    and
    Arsenal 2 – 2 Liverpool

  20. David says:

Real Madrid have tied things up Raphaël Varane header from Ozil cross 1 – 1 (84)

  21. David says:

2tone, Defense, I’ll go with you on that….but I don’t see Besler getting much play time, or Boca.

  22. David says:

    scores:

    Man Utd 2 – 1 Southampton (88)
    Reading 1 – 2 Chelsea (89)
    Fulham 2 – 1 West Ham (89)

  23. David says:

2tone, CM. arhhh!!! I know you’re right, but JK loves Edu and he doesn’t Kljestan, can’t call that one, otherwise yes. Oh and I am one of those that don’t rate Beckerman.

  24. David says:

Fulham make it 3 – 1 over West Ham in dying minutes

  25. David says:

Wow 5 minutes into extra time and Reading tie things up with Chelsea (maybe they think their in the FA Cup)

  26. David says:

    Scores:

    Manchester United 2 – 1 Southampton (FT)
    Fulham 3 – 1 West Ham (FT)
    Reading 2 – 2 Chelsea (FT)

  27. 2tone says:

I don’t rate beckerman either, but JK does. Kljestan should get the call over Edu in my opinion. But with that being said I could see both Edu and Kljestan getting called up and Corona not.

  28. David says:

IN the the El Classico – all square 1 – 1 off to Barcelona for the second leg

  29. David says:

2tone, AM, I would like to see Gatt, Zusi and Benny, not sure about Corona, haven’t seen him play recently. I know Gatt just tweeted he is on a plane back to Norway (worrying)
This to me is the area where the US has the biggest gap. Having Donovan and/or Dempsey in that creative role has always paid dividends, Benny is the only AM that has experience as the creator…maybe having Dempsey as a withdrawn forward lining up with Benny…..not sure – the wings are going to be on fire with Gatt, Zusi and Chandler. Oh hey what about Benny and Bedoya?

  30. David says:

    2tone, FWD:

Jozy, Dempsey, Gomez (that’s some line up) #4 Fwd I guess it will be EJ, but I didn’t like his performance last night, and that’s when he should have shone.

  31. David says:

Andy Najar is now Official – to Anderlecht

  32. 2tone says:

Well it looks like Gatt will not be in the squad. Thast a tad dissappointing. I just don’t see where any kind of dynamic play is goign to come from.

  33. David says:

2tone, you know this is the first time that truly is difficult to pick that 23 – we discussed this and didn’t mention Diskerud, Torres,Morales,Ream,Agudelo the list goes on. A place on the USMNT has become more competitive than I can ever remember, and when all is said and done that (not the win/loss record) will be JK’s legacy

I am extremely optimistic about the future of US soccer and of the USMNT

  34. David says:

OK that was fun today – even though the number of American games was fewer than hoped for.

Thanks everyone, good stuff, good chat, :) differing opinions, but good stuff

Be here this weekend for more of “The Thread” the weather in Europe is improving, we should see some German lower league games added to our major leagues.

  35. Trent Hill says:

“I don’t really follow the Galaxy. Donovan has had the opportunity to go to Everton (short loan) twice and taken it. If Everton had asked this year would he not have said yes again? I thought that it was Donovan that dissed the idea this year?”

Donovan wants to move to the EPL–it’s an open secret. He loves Everton and its fans and was not shy about saying he’d love to play there. Unfortunately, Donovan’s greatest benefit is his greatest curse. His marketability makes him a millionaire much beyond his wages. It also means that the number Everton might be willing to pay him for his ability as a player (call it 7-10 million) would not even approach his value as a marketing tool for the Galaxy (in the tens of millions).
