The last time at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park
   January 15, 2013 (11:32 PM) by Matt

With the latest news that the US will play its first home qualifier of the Hex at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, I decided to take a quick look at the last (and only other) World Cup qualifier to be held at that stadium.

The date was November 19, 2008 and the US had already clinched a spot in the Hex when they faced Guatemala in the last match of the CONCACAF third round.  Bob Bradley trotted out the following starters:

Brad Guzan; John Thorrington, Clarence Goodson, Michael Parkhurst, Jonathan Bornstein; Freddy Adu, Pablo Mastroeni (capt.), Ricardo Clark, Sacha Kljestan; Kenny Cooper, Jozy Altidore

While the bench looked like this:

Davy Arnaud, Conor Casey, Brian Ching, Troy Perkins, Drew Moor, Cory Gibbs, Chris Rolfe

The US won by a 2-0 scoreline with Freddy Adu scoring first in the 54th minute and Kenny Cooper scoring the second goal in the 69th minute.  Here are the US Soccer highlights of the match.

  1. Manny says:

I miss the old Adu :(

  2. 2tone says:

Freddy Adu is doing the same things in Philly except he has horrible strikers. This video confirms that Adu should have been called into the January camp. Would rather see him over Feilhaber.

  3. Hafiz says:

I concur with 2tone. If Buddle can get into camp with the dismal season that he had, there’s no reason Adu should have been left off of the roster. God knows creativity is lacking on the USMNT, and Adu isn’t afraid to take defenders head on.

  4. Mitch Malitz says:

Adu involved in almost every single highlight there.

  5. Brennan says:

Freddy is raging on this video. Really would have liked to see him called in for Jan camp.

  6. daniil says:

i dont think adu is as good as some people do…
that being said, I wonder if it might be a little culture thing that JK holds against him, adu kinda symbolizing a foregone time of american soccer that Klinsi would like to move away from.

  7. Ian says:

Reading the ticker was fun, Mike Mussina, Yao Ming, Marc Bulger.

  8. Trent Hill says:

I agree that Adu should’ve made camp cupcake. He was great at last year’s gold cup.
