A pretty blah game, but the US found a way to get a 2-2 draw.

Michael Bradley is good.  Josh Gatt does exist.  Here are the highlights

  1. Dirk says:

Jozy Altidore was poor throughout save for that 1 set up to Jermaine Jones which was horribly botched.

Josh Gatt looks promising but raw

Danny Williams just had a bad night.

Michael Bradley had a very good night when it counted most.

Hercules Gomez was ineffective yet again time to sit him down

  2. Dirk says:

Clarence Goodson is mistake prone. Geoff Cameron was better. Fabian Johnson looks good made some nice runs, Tim Chandler had not as big an impact on the other side. Tim Howard was amazing. Jermaine Jones was all over the field didn’t get a yellow card, his finishing in the final 3rd was so so. would have liked to have seen Terrence Boyd come on for Jozy much sooner. Juan Agudelo back header to Bradley is the kind of smart play that Jozy rarely makes. Was very happy to see Mix Diskerud get the game tying goal.

All in all a draw on the road in Russia is a good thing

  3. Badwolfdc says:

In their last four games, the Russians had not conceded a goal (3 @home 1 on the road)Lead group F in WCQ Europe with max points. 4 games 4 wins.
They beat Northern Ireland, Azerbaijan, Israel and a Cristiano led Portugal.
Not a pretty game, unusually poor defense,Midfield was OK, Bradley was very impressive and at times bossed. Mix and Sasha, IMHO played well. I agree with Dirk that Danny Williams had a bad night. I disagree with most poster’s, in that I thought that Jozy was not bad, definitely mediocre, but not bad.
I am not as worried about the Defense as I am the mid-field. There is a real shortage of creativity in the US Mid-Field, with the exception of Bradley. The mid-field just can’t seem to find a way to feed the forwards. We seem to have a group that are very good at speedy forward runs (Sasha, Fabian and occasionally Jones) but very few creators. There is no problem with the attacking midfielder/withdraw forwards, with Gomez, Donovan and Dempsey, but at forward there is a problem. My personal opinion is that the forwards we have do not fit very well with Klinsmann’s system. Altidore and Boyd are kinda clones, both seem better with their backs to the goal. Agudelo would be a better choice as 2nd forward, but he just doesn’t have the experience yet and needs to work on his upper body strength, all that will come with time. I don’t particularly like Wondolowski, but his forward facing positioning would probably help the team when they use a 4-4-2.
Final thought; I thought that the next generation played pretty well, Gatt, Mix, Fabian and Agudelo were all at average or above for inexperienced internationals playing a very good Russian team in their house. Future looks pretty good

  4. Trent Hill says:

Badwolf isn’t alone. I thought Jozy did ok too. Not bad, not great, but okay.

The young kids played great. Mix, Gatt (raw, but good), Boyd, and Agudelo were all pretty good.

Bradley is good. Jones was also good. Williams had an off-night. Johnson is good. Chandler was no Dolo.

All in all–drawing a great Russia team, away from home, when missing Donovan, Dolo, Boca for 70 minutes and Dempsey is pretty much a win for me.

  5. Howie says:

A bit surprising to realize that this was tied for the best record for the US in a calendar year given the general malaise in the program.

  6. Gregory says:

Chandler looked good, he should start over Dolo.

Gatt looked like he didn’t belong at first, he settled down but it’s obvious he can’t dribble.

Goodson is a drop in quality with passing out of the back.

J.Jones is not an attacking midfielder.

    D.Williams could have played better.

    That was a great draw.

  7. William says:

    Howard was good again…shocker
Chandler had a better 1st half than 2nd…I hope he really is committed but I won’t count on anything until I see him in Feb.
Cameron was really good again but Johnson was our best defender
Goodson did well but that miscommunication can not happen
Gatt needs to be more aggressive next time
Bradley was the best player on the pitch for the US…again
Jones was very good this game and I’m not a fan
Huge fan of Williams but he was poor
    Gomez was sub par
Altidore worked hard and did the best he could for the most part…squandered a couple of chances and seemingly was lacking in confidence.

I really wanted to see Gyau though.

  8. daniil says:

Haven’t seen the match yet but the goals looked nice and timmy looked real good. Good result. All in all, yeah it was a pretty good year, mostly that one huge tear from spring to fall. Just goes to show how far the program has come, the expectations are just that much higher. We still have to stay focused and make forward we go into the hex strong.

  9. 2tone says:

IF you would have asked me two weeks ago if I thought the USMNT could get a result against Russia in Russia without Dempsey, Donovan, Dolo, and Zusi; I would have laughed and told you no way. But they team got a result and competed fairly well against the #9 ranked team in the world who by the way doesn’t give up goals at home. I think that says a lot about the USMNT progress under Klinsmann. Onwards and upwards!

  10. Jeffrey says:

I think the most important issue the US needs to deal with right now and I hope everyone can agree is Sasha Kljestan’s pedo-stash.

  11. chris says:

williams looked awful but hey everyones entitled to a bad day, i think he should still be our number 6
jozy wasnt awful but the chance johnson gave him in the second half a good striker would have finished
bradley and howard were awesome, surprise surprise
agudelo and boyd looked pretty good off the bench
    gatt was a little dissapointing
jones played well other than the blown chance altidore created for him
johnson another good game from him
would like to see more of mix
chandler look solid but still hes not dolo

  12. William says:

    dynamite drop-in jeffrey!!! well played.

Williams, Jones and Bradley don’t mix. JK needs to pick two (so as long as one of them is Bradley) and just go with it. Agree?

Jozy IS a very good striker. I would say that a confident striker would have finished that…Jozy didn’t look confident

    Boyd really didn’t do much

Gatt was capped for the first time ever AT Russia…I think given the circumstance he was pretty good.

Would love to see more Mixx!!!

  13. chris says:

@william, heres my strongest usa starting 11
Bench-Guzan, Rimando, Goodson, Gonzalez, Lichaj, Chandler, Beckerman, Jones, Shea, Adu?, E.Johnson, Altidore

Boyd did set up the tying goal with his backwards header, yes i agree on jozy, he is a fine striker for his club but right now for country its just not working for him, i cant even begin to explain it. Also the reason i go with torres on here is that we need a more attacking looking CM if were going to play with those three in the middle, which looks like the plan in the future. I could also see Zusi, Kljestan or Mix filling this role but i would like to give torres a chance there

  14. Gregory says:

You really think Dolo would have played better then Chandler at RB vs Russia? Chandler was not beaten once on the wing, and he showed the ability to bully wingers off the ball. Height doesn’t mean anything, but Chandler is 7 inches taller and 11 years younger then Dolo. (And much faster) I’m not trying to suck Chandler off, but it’s pretty obvious Chandler has/will takeover at RB.

FYI Bocanegra is done by next year. His old and getting older, same with Goodson. Cameron made Goodson look outclassed with his distribution, even though Cameron is still shaky at times. Cameron should get better the more EPL games he plays.

  15. Kyle says:

One thing was evident today. There is life without Landon Donovan. I kind of want him to retire now.

  16. Kyle says:

Oh yea and I fully expect someone like John Anthony Brooks or Omar Gonzalez to be our second starter next to Cameron in the near future.

  17. Kyle says:

It’s good to know as well that with Chandler and Gatt on the right flank either one can burst forward with attacks, knowing the other has the ability to defend.

  18. Trent Hill says:

Donovan isnt what he was around 2010 right now, but he’s still world-class and it shows when he turns up. I’m guessing after the Playoffs end, he gets a good rest and then moves to Everton.

  19. chris says:

@gregory-dolo was fantastic in the last few qualifiers and i like his experience, yes chandler looked good but i still dont trust him that much.
@kyle- have you watched the MLS playoffs? Donovan has looked fantastic and when he comes back he still has his starting spot, period.

  21. Trent Hill says:

It was definitely entertaining and a draw really felt like a win to me. Playing away from home, in those temperatures, against an in-form Russia that’s ranked 9th in the world, while missing 3-4 of our best players. That’s a good result.

  22. Ian says:

I thought this was a very entertaining game. Despite a couple mental errors I really feel like this is the best the US can play at the moment. The announcers kept talking about Russia dominating the game and outside the first 10 minutes I didn’t see that. I thought the US really picked it up at the end if the first half and were the aggressors in the second. Look at the goals each team scored. The US had 2 wonder strikes (Diskerud’s was going far corner before the deflection) while the Russians got a gift and a soft/dumb penalty. I thought the US looked really good in tight spaces. The Russians would flood the side of the field the ball was on and forced the US to play quick passes to get out. I wish they would have switched the field more to take advantage of the Russian tactics. It’s obvious we need someone to partner Cameron in the middle to really tighten up the defense. Overall I was really encouraged. Maybe on my lunch break I’ll give my opinion on each player’s performance.

  23. Gregory says:

J.Jones can kill a game on the attacking half, he has zero vision when dribbling and prefers to fight off defenders rather then passing the ball when pressured. Sadly he is still one of the best options at Mid.

Playing vs Russia’s A squad is not comparable to playing Guatemala, Jamaica or A&B. Zusi would have looked like a lost runt vs Russia, I watched Zusi in the MLS playoffs and he didn’t look good.

Gatt has a chance to be good; honestly he does not have world class speed, running the 100m in 11seconds is fast but is not near world class. That showed vs Russia, even though Gatt did show he is athletic and fast. He really needs a transfer to a better league. He can rely on his speed in Norway, but in the Bundesliga/EPL, everybody is an athlete. He was much more impressive then any MLS winger or midfielder.

Gomez needs to score goals, I would trash him, but his work rate and defense is top notch. He also has a nice touch and high soccer IQ. But he needs to score goals.

Altidore looked okay, keep in mind Russia’s defense his World Class, he was able to when alot of headers, even though his touch was not that good. I really doubt anyone other then Dempsey would have done any better.
