Hump day link randomness
April 22, 2015 (12:46 AM) by Matt Benson

A bunch of links that are all over the place.

Roderick is over in Europe on vacation so no The OT Report for this past weekend.  As for some highlights, we had goals by Cole Grossman, Evin Nadaner, Cesar Romero, Björn Maars Johnsen, Jay Denny and a brace by Christian Pulisic.  We also had assists by Joe Corona and Aron JohannssonFreddy Adu made his debut in Finland.  Bobby Wood returned from injury and started for Erzgebirge Aue.

As for the mid week so far, Gedion Zelalem help setup a goal for Arsenal’s U-21 team.  Michael Orozco had an assist as Puebla won the Copa MX final over Chivas (Herculez Gomez watched from the bench).  And Andrija Novakovich scored a goal for Reading’s U-21 team.

The US U-20 team is in Austria this week and here is their roster.  They had a 2-2 draw against Qatar yesterday with the US goals coming from Amando Moreno and Conor Donovan.

The US U-23 team will take on Mexico later tonight at the StubHub Center.  Here is their roster.  Apparently manager Andi Herzog asked Hamburg permission for Julian Green to stay after last week’s friendly against Mexico for this game but they didn’t respond yes to him until Green was already on a plane back to Germany.  Herzog also wants to create a pipeline to the USMNT with the U-23 team.  And  Liviu Bird’s random observation from training earlier this week, Jordan Morris has Type 1 diabetes and tests his blood sugar during training.

For those of you that miss watching grainy Youtube videos of Josh Gatt flying down the wings, we have some good news.  He has been cleared to play again after a couple knee surgeries.

Hannover 96 did some shuffling around of their coaching staff and Steve Cherundolo has been promoted to an assistant.

Greg Seltzer took a look at Danny Williams’ performance in the FA Cup semifinals from the weekend.

The USMNT’s 2-0 victory over Mexico last week did well ratings-wise for Fox Sports 1.

Pele thinks the US should host the 2026 World Cup.

Cameron Carter-Vickers and Gedion Zelalem made The Telegraph’s Top 35 hottest prospects in who play in England list.

Mukwelle Akale and Villarreal won the División de Honor Juvenil de Fútbol Group 7 title.

And finally, Tim Ream is better than Jordan Spieth at golf.

Keeping updated on player movement in lower leagues
April 7, 2015 (12:02 AM) by Matt Benson

While most people are aware when the Freddy Adu’s of the world make a transfer, there have been a lot of moves made at the lower leagues involving Americans over the last couple months.  With the help with David (who helps me on a lot of the behind the scenes stuff), here are some of the moves we do know with a bunch of the Scandinavian leagues set to kickoff in the next couple weeks.

Paul Torres was at Landskrona in Sweden last season and now he is with Sandnes Ulf in Norway.

As for another player leaving Sweden, Andy Lorei scored a couple goals for Bodens BK last season, but he has returned to the US and has signed with the Tulsa Roughnecks.

Lorei isn’t the only player returning to the US.  Kevin Sawchak has signed with the Atlanta Silverbacks after bouncing around Finland since 2011, spending his last season with the always fun named KooTeePee.

Taylor University product Matt Poland has signed with Finnish side Sporting Kristina.  And it looks like ex-USL Pro winger Tyrone Hall is also on the team.

Going back to Sweden, Sandvikens IF have recently signed Chris Harris.  Looking at their roster, you will also see they have fellow Americans Adam Kelemet, Anthony Allison and Seth Rudolph.

Want another smaller team with a bunch of Americans?  I was already aware that US U-23 potential goalkeeper Tyler Miller was at SVN Zweibrücken in Germny, but they also have Americans Jimmy Lannon and Evin Nadaner.  I remember when Lannon was at FC Lustenau in Austira, but it looks like he also had a stop with German side 1.FCA Darmstadt in between.

Staying in Germany, Nigerian-American Abuchi Obinwa has been promoted from Hannover 96’s U-19 team to their U-23 team recently as he made a bench appearance in a Regionalliga game at the end of March.

Also in the Regionalliga, defensive midfield Jonathan Koshko signed with Wormatia Worms back in February.  It looks like he was also at 1.FCA Darmstadt with Jimmy Lannon at one point.

Want to cheer for a player in the Faroe Islands Premier League?  Mayowa Alli has you covered.  He was last seen at Vendsyssel FF in Denmark but he is now out on loan to KÍ Klaksvík.

For all you Armenian Premier League die-hards, you are well aware that Bryan de la Fuente is on Ararat Yerevan (duh?!).  He is now joined by Moises Orozco and Victor Garza.

For those of you that remember the run up to the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship, Jay Denny was a midfielder who captained the US U-20 team a couple times but missed out on the tournament due to commitments at Stoke City (that is what wiki tells me).  Since then, he has bounced around various teams in the lower levels of England and he has recently signed with Conference National side Worcester City.  This will be his second stint with the Faithful after playing in two games with them in 2012-13.

This is a shout-out to OT reader Trent who loves himself some Irish soccer and now he was a new player to keep track of in forward Michael Lyons who signed with Irish First Division side Cabinteely.

And finally, for those of you running the J.C. Mack fan club, I don’t know exactly where he is, but he played in a game with Jaro in Finland in February and was last seen on trial with Dalkurd FF in Sweden in March.

With the Scandinavian leagues starting up over the next couple weeks, I am sure we will find out about more guys popping up on random teams.
