KuPS vs. VPS Highlights
August 12, 2015 (12:44 PM) by Matt Benson

In just his second game with the club, Tristan Bowen scored a goal today in KuPS’s 2-2 draw to VPS.  Bowen and Stephen McCarthy went the full 90 minutes for KuPS while Isaiah Schafer went 90 minutes for VPS.  Here is the Veikkausliiga highlight show with Bowen’s goal coming at the 2:07 mark or check out below in GIF form.

KuPS vs. VPS Highlights
April 24, 2015 (8:13 PM) by Matt Benson

Since the internet is still awesome, someone did another Freddy every touch video.  Freddy Adu got the start and played 74 minutes in KuPS’ 1-0 win over VPS on Thursday.  Stephen McCarthy came off the bench and played 11 minutes for KuPS, while Jordan Seabrook went the full 90 minutes for VPS.  Here is all the Adu action of his second game in Finland.

A few links for Monday
March 30, 2015 (12:04 AM) by Matt Benson

Here are a few links to start your week.

Aron Johannsson has been ruled out for Tuesday’s game with a toe infection.  Jordan Morris has been called in from the US U-23 team in Bosnia to replace him.

Jurgen Klinsmann told ESPN’s Doug McIntyre that he plans on calling in the Euro-based players for the June friendlies against Germany and Netherlands even though most of the European seasons end in early May and the Gold Cup is not until July.  So much for any vacation.

Normally a wing player for the US but he plays centrally at the club level, Alejandro Bedoya is willing to play wherever on the field for the USMNT.

The US finally found out its first opponent of the Gold Cup as Honduras overcame a 3-1 first leg deficit to beat French Guiana 4-3 aggregate.  The US will face Honduras at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas on July 7.

Here are highlights of the US U-23’s 5-2 win over Bosnia from Friday.  And here are some photos from training with the U-23ers.

The US U-23 team will be taking on Mexico’s U-23 team at the StubHub Center on Wednesday, April 22.  Tickets will go on sale this Thursday.  I might have to pick up a ticket for this.

The U-20 team lost their game against England’s U-21 team, 2-1, on Sunday.  Here is the game report.  Hopefully the highlights will become available in the next couple of days.

In case you missed it, Freddy Adu signed with Finnish side KuPS.  He won’t be the only American at the club as former New England Revolution defender Stephen McCarthy signed with the club in January.

Also in Finland, former Santa Clara forward Harrison Hanley signed with Mikkelin Palloilijat.  He has already played in a couple Suomen Cup matches.

Chris Tsonis was last seen in Iceland with Fjölnir last season but he is now with USL’s New York Red Bulls II.

Devann Yao scored a goal and had an assist in Neustrelitz’s 2-0 win over Greifswalder SV in the semifinals of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Regional Cup last week.

Luca de la Torre scored two goals with Fulham’s U-18 team this weekend.  Still looking for highlights of the brace.

US U-17 forward Haji Wright has trained/trialed with some teams in Europe over the last two years but it looks like he is going to sign with the New York Cosmos.

Quentin Westberg finally found a new home in Norway with Sarpsborg 08.

Caleb Stanko looks like he is getting closer to returning to the field/training after tearing his ACL in 2014.

Want some more Google-translated interviews?  Here is one with Devante Parker.

And finally, it looks like a couple Americans (Tomas Buchmiller and Samuel Strong) are on trial with Eintracht Frankfurt.

A bunch of links for Tuesday morning
February 3, 2015 (1:12 AM) by Matt Benson

Lots to get to so let’s dive in.

Bobby Wood left the USMNT camp so he could sign with FC Erzgebirge Aue.  There seems to be some confusion among the American folk (thanks to trying to translate German reports) on whether he signed a permanent deal or if it is a loan deal (I think it is a permanent deal).  I think the confusion comes from most articles talking about Erzgebirge Aue bringing in two players, Wood and Román Golobart, with Golobart coming on loan while Wood signed a contract through 2016-17.

In case you missed it at the end of last week, Joe Gyau needs another knee surgery and is out for the rest of the season.

Alejandro Bedoya has signed a contract extension with FC Nantes through 2018-19.  Ligue1.com also has a nice article up on Bedoya.

The USMNT is now back in California training before Sunday’s friendly against Panama.  Jurgen Klinsmann is not happy about the team’s fitness.  Here is Panama’s roster for Sunday’s game.  I will be there in the flesh to check this one out.

Also in USMNT news, more than 33,000 tickets have been sold so far for April’s friendly against Mexico.

This is probably recycled rumors from last August, but Sunderland might have been interested in Geoff Cameron this transfer window (I vaguely remember Cameron-to-Sunderland rumors last transfer window).

Eric Lichaj has a new manager at Nottingham Forest and it is someone with experience of managing Americans (Spoiler Alert: It is former Bolton manager Dougie Freedman).

New York Red Bulls midfielder Sacha Kljestan got a nice sendoff from Anderlecht this past weekend.

Bundesliga.com has an interview up with Julian Green.

bundesliga.com: Are you allowed to speak German in the changing room? Or does it have to be English? Or even American-English specifically?

Green: [Laughs] Well the coach [Jürgen Klinsmann] would prefer it if we spoke English as much as possible, but I have to admit that we do slip into German sometimes!

Ashton Götz has signed a contract extension with Hamburger SV through 2016-17.

We had some goals this weekend.  Aron Johannsson scored his first goal of 2015 in AZ’s 3-1 win over Heracles (highlights).  In Scottish League One action, Kevin Dzierzawski scored a goal in Peterhead’s 2-0 win over Stenhousemuir (highlights).  And while it wasn’t a goal, Tim Ream was credited with an assist in Bolton’s 2-2 draw to Wolves on Saturday (highlights).

And we had a few goals in friendly action this weekend.  Alfredo Morales scored a goal in Ingolstadt’s 2-0 win over Shawn Barry and LASK Linz.  As for Shawn Barry, he scored a goal in LASK Linz’s 2-1 win over Trnava.  Babajide Ogunbiyi scored a goal in Viborg’s 4-2 win over OB.  And Paul Arriola scored a goal in Tijuana U-20’s 4-1 win over Morelia on Friday.  Jon Arnold was there and got some quotes from Arriola.

Staying at Tijuana, Greg Garza had to be subbed out of Tijuana’s senior team’s win over Morelia after taking on a hard tackle.  He tried to play through it, but it was bothering him too much.

While it was only a friendly, it was nice to see Zarek Valentin made his first start for Bodø / Glimt since his ankle injury from last season.

Brendan Rodgers recently said some nice things about Marc Pelosi.

Alex De John is now with IK Start in Norway’s Tippeligaen.  De John has made a nice jump from Ekenäs IF (Finnish third division) to TPS (Finnish first division) to IK Start (Norway first division) in three seasons.

As Howie posted yesterday, Stephen McCarthy has signed with KuPS in Finland.

British-American dual national Calvin Crooks has signed with Icelandic side BI / Bolungarvik for the 2015 season.

It looks like Stefano Bonomo, a 2015 MLS SuperDraft second round selection of the Red Bulls, had a trial with Miedz Legnica in Poland and might have another in England soon.

And finally, Jeff Carlisle spoke to US U-17 international Christian Pulisic about trying to prove himself at Borussia Dortmund.  In the article, it talks about him trying to get a Croatian passport through his dad’s ancestry and it looks like he did this weekend (and another tweet about it).

Former New England Revolution defender Stephen McCarthy is off to Finland
February 2, 2015 (5:14 PM) by Howie Michaels

While much of the recent focus has been on Americans returning to MLS, there have been a handful of veterans hopping over to Europe, primarily guys who were unable to secure jobs within MLS. The latest of those is Stephen McCarthy, formerly a defender with the New England Revolution. According to TheBentMusket, he has signed with an old OT favorite, Finland’s KuPS.

The 26 year-old was a 2nd round draft pick back in 2011 and saw decent minutes early, but he saw his minutes dwindle with the Eastern Conference champions, culminating when he made just one appearance this year (and TBM makes no note of an injury).

KuPS finished 7th in the Veikkausliiga last year. Etchu Tabe played for them a few years ago if long-time readers recognize the name.
