Friday morning links
September 11, 2015 (2:12 AM) by Matt Benson

I should be in bed as this week has sucked with work but here are some quick links before the weekend.

The US now knows the final two teams in its group for World Cup qualifying and those teams are Vincent & The Grenadines and Guatemala.  They will join the US and Trinidad & Tobago in Group C.

Well done, FUT Azteca.

The US U-23 team won their second friendly this week, a 2-0 victory over Qatar.  The goals were scored by Benji Joya and Gboly Ariyibi.  Here is also a video of their first half of the week in England.

Cody Cropper is going to miss up to six weeks after having some kind of knee surgery this week.  Looks like the U-23s will be going with Zack Steffen or Ethan Horvath next month.

Benji Joya’s ex-partner in crime, Daniel Cuevas, has a new home and it is with Indy Eleven.

Darlington Nagbe is officially a US citizen.  If he gets called up, I am guessing it won’t be until January.  I think Brian Sciaretta has pointed out in the past that only one MLS player has received his first call-up under Klinsmann in a camp other than January and it was Alan Gordon.

COMNEBOL is meeting up with CONCACAF on September 17 to figure out next summer’s Copa America.  As Jeff Carlisle points out, that date is conveniently a couple days after Loretta Lynch has a press conference in Zurich.  And some reports out of Mexico have the FMF supporting a Copa America in the US.  Basically everything comes down to money.

Could we potentially see a MLS vs. Premier League tournament in the future?  Maybe.

English-American goalkeeper Paul Rachubka has signed with Bolton.

Borussia Dortmund had a friendly against St. Pauli this week.  While most of the world wanted to see Adnan Januzaj‘s debut, Christian Pulisic and Junior Flores both came off the bench for Dortmund, while Fabrice Picault scored for St. Pauli.

Also in weird friendlies during the international week, Jann George scored for Jahn Regensburg in their win over Bayern Munich.

We also had a goal in a game that really counted this week.  Joe Broekhuizen came off the bench and scored the lone goal of the game in VPS’ 1-0 win over Ilves in Finland on Thursday.

And finally, here is a behind the scenes look at Christian Eissele’s club in Finland, Kemi Kings.

A couple links for Thursday
September 3, 2015 (1:36 AM) by Matt Benson

A few things for Thursday.

ESPN’s Doug McIntyre has some nuggets from the USMNT camp this week.  Jozy Altidore is playing well, while it looks like the starting fullbacks will be Tim Ream (LB) and Geoff Cameron (RB).  Also, Jurgen Klinsmann reiterated that Brad Guzan is the #1 goalkeeper through at least the CONCACAF Cup.

US Soccer put up a little fun video on whether Gyasi Zardes scored a goal or not on Tim Howard in training.  Looks like a goal to me.

Ben Lederman has been in the news a lot recently and Ives Galarcep is hearing that Lederman is joining the U.S. U-17 residency program in Bradenton, Florida.

Fresh off his assist with Borussia Dortmund’s U-19 team this past weekend (highlights), Christian Pulisic got to train with the first team this week.

Bob Bradley has been doing work in Norway this season with Stabæk sitting in second place with eight games left and now the Fighting Bob Bradleys will have to finish the season strong without their top goal scorer who was sold to Hull City.

Staying in Norway, Kenya Brown spoke to Viking FK defender A.J. Soares.

On loan from Orlando City, Adam Bedell scored three goals in HB Køge’s 6-2 win over Frederikssund in the Danish Cup on Wednesday.  Here is a post-game photo of Bedell.  And here is an intro video courtesy of HB Køge’s Youtube channel.

A couple other transfers to mention with deadline day this week.  Fabrice Picault is now with St. Pauli in Germany.  It looks like Mayowa Alli is on loan with Thisted FC in Denmark.  And Hardin-Simmons product Matt Pitcock has signed with FC Bern in Switzerland.

An assortment of links for Tuesday
January 13, 2015 (12:38 AM) by Matt Benson

A bunch of goodies to get into.

The USMNT has begun January’s camp this week in beautiful Southern California.  In case you missed it, Jurgen Klinsmann has called in 28 players for this camp, a mixture of vets and a bunch of youth as he looks towards the Olympic/U-23 team.

One player at this month’s camp that you probably don’t know that much about is Julio Morales.  Brian Sciaretta gets you caught up to date on Mr. Morales.  It looks like Morales might not be able to play in the friendlies just yet (although he can still participate in the camp) as he has to file a one-time switch with FIFA since he played with Mexico at the 2013 U-20 World Cup.

Much like Brad Friedel with the U-20 team, another former player, Carlos Bocanegra, is helping out as a coach this month.

Kyle McCarthy takes a look at the mixture of vets and youth as camp begins.

Daryl Grove came up with some humorous one-sentence descriptions for each of the players.  Brek Shea’s is easily the best.

Jurgen Klinsmann did not win FIFA Coach of the Year, but he did receive votes from 12 of the 544 voters, including five first-place votes.

In other USMNT news, CONCACAF has moved up the start of the final round of World Cup qualifying (a.k.a. The Hex) by three months to November of 2016 due to FIFA eliminating some international fixture dates in 2017.  The draw for the first round will take place on Thursday, but the US won’t enter qualification until the fourth round, beginning in November of 2015.  Yes, the whole cycle is about to start up again.

And we might know about two more friendlies for this year as Fox Sports ran this graphic during Friday’s U-20 game, which shows games against Australia and Ghana for later this year.

The US U-20 team is off to a rough start down in Jamaica, drawing to Guatemala (highlights) and losing to Panama (highlights).  Cameron Carter-Vickers has scored the only goal for the US so far and he spoke to Tottenham’s website about it.  Junior Flores had to leave the Panama game after getting his ankle stepped/rolled on and it sounds like he is in a boot and is on crutches.  That makes me think he will be out for a little while.  Want some goalie critique of the first two games?  Will has you covered.  And finally, Tony Meola spoke to Tab Ramos and Ramos claims Gedion Zelalem is “untouchable until March” when it comes to the U-20 team.

Speaking of Mr. Zelalem, the guys over at The Short Fuse have a little write- up on the savoir of American soccer Arsenal prospect.

Moving onto some club news.

All signs are pointing towards Mix Diskerud signing with NYCFC later today (or this week).

There was some more Jozy Altidore-to-MLS chatter over the weekend and Toronto FC appears to have the edge at the moment.  If this were to go down, I am just going to pretend that this was some mastermind of Klinsi to get Michael Bradley and Jozy practicing together everyday.

And both Steven Goff and Jeff Carlisle are hearing that a couple MLS teams are interested in signing Sacha Kljestan as well as an English League Championship side.

DeAndre Yedlin got the start and played 60 minutes with Tottenham’s U-21 team on Friday.  To go along with the video in the last link, here are some photos from the game.

Cody Cropper had to be taken to the hospital with a head injury on Monday after a collision in Southampton’s U-21 game.  Hopefully this doesn’t become anything serious.

Jonathan Spector is finally healthy again.  Although he didn’t play, he did make Birmingham City’s bench this past weekend in their 3-1 win over Wigan Athletic.

Heath Pearce didn’t come to terms with Orlando City after being taken in the expansion draft, so he might be looking to take his talents to Europe.  Pearce began his professional career in Denmark with FC Nordsjælland and also played with Hansa Rostock in Germany so he does have experience abroad.

Ventura Alvarado told Brian Sciaretta last week that he would be interested in a US call-up if Klinsmann called.

Since I get e-mailed one every other month by someone wanting to know Freddy Adu’s status, Steven Goff tells us that he is back training in the D.C. area since being let go from Serbia.

Justin Moose will no longer being playing in Finland with SJK as he signed with the Wilmington Hammerheads of USL Pro last week.

I can’t find much more on this, but Frank Simek’s wikipedia page has been updated that he is now with Sông Lam Nghệ An in Vietnam.  As one would expect, it is not easy to find solid information on this team or league.

Goalkeeper Alex Horwath (not to be confused with U-20 goalkeeper Ethan Horvath) is leaving Sweden and Ljungskile SK and signed with Norwegian second division side SK Brann.  Now Horwath and Horvath will both be in Norway.

Remember when David Yelldell had a hot minute with the USMNT?  He talked about it to Bayer Leverkusen’s website.

Former US U-20 player Fabrice Picault has signed with Sparta Prague in the Czech Republic.

And finally, American-born Ghanaian Koby Osei-Wusu is playing with Ghana’s U-20 team.  And this website doesn’t think highly of US Soccer.

He is one of the young talents recruited and being groomed for the various US national soccer teams through their United States Soccer Development Association (USSDA).

The inclusion of Koby will be a major boost for US soccer which is regarded as a low competitive standard.

Hey Ghana, remember thisOr this?  I do.
