Various Bundesliga kits for 2015-16
July 29, 2015 (6:12 AM) by Matt Benson

I haven’t done one of these posts in a while, but here is a bunch of 2015-16 kits for Bundesliga teams featuring Americans this season.

There has been some talk that Julian Green could be headed out on loan this season, but he will have plenty of options of jerseys if he sticks around Bayern Munich (order – home/road/third).

While David Yelldell hasn’t played a league game for Bayer Leverkusen’s senior team since joining the team in 2011-12, he is still on their roster.  And Bayer Leverkusen have three options of kits for 2014-15 (order – home/road/third).

Borussia Dortmund has a few Americans throughout their system in Joe Gyau, Junior Flores and Christian Pulisic.  They also have three different jerseys for 2015-16 (order – home/road/third).

Borussia Mönchengladbach and Kappa always have “interesting” kits and this year will be no different for Fabian Johnson and Mario Rodriguez (order – home/road).

Timothy Chandler is in his second season with Eintracht Frankfurt and they will have a pinstripe shirt much like the Frankfurt team from 1972-73 (order – home/road).

John Brooks and Hertha Berlin will have pretty standard Hertha-like jerseys for this season (order – home/road/third).

Alfredo Morales’ Ingolstadt will be playing in the Bundesliga for the first time in club history and they only have a home jersey out right now.

While Hoffenheim no longer have Fabian Johnson or Danny Williams, Russell Canouse is still with the club and Lotto went a little crazy with their three kits (order -home/road/third).

While Bobby Wood never made it to Stuttgart, Jerome Kiesewetter is still with the club and Puma has three options for them in 2015-16 (order – home/road/third).

Terrence Boyd is slowly working his way back from ACL surgery and RB Leipzig have some pretty basic jerseys waiting for him upon his return this season (order – home/road).

Bobby Wood’s new home for 2015-16 is with Union Berlin.  Union Berlin switched things up this year going with Macron over kit supplier Uhlsport (order – home/road).

And finally, Freiburg boast Caleb Stanko, Eric Lickert, Ethan Sonis and now Zack Steffen among their various teams.  And they have three Nike kits for this season (order – home/road/third).

Have a favorite of the bunch?  Think one is really, really ugly?  As for my own taste, I like Bayern Munich Road, Dortmund Third, Eintracht Frankfurt Home and Freiburg Home.  I dislike basically all the Hoffenheim ones and Borussia Mönchengladbach Road.

A bunch of links for Thursday
May 21, 2015 (1:38 AM) by Matt Benson

This has been a busy week for me, but here are a bunch of links from the last week or so.

In case you have been away this week, Jozy Altidore is going to be out 4-5 weeks with a hamstring injury.

One player who could see some more playing time with the US without Jozy in the upcoming friendlies is Aron Johannsson.  He was named Eredivisie Player of the Week after his two goal/one assist performance over the weekend.  Here is also a little video on ArJo.

Alfredo Morales helped Ingolstadt win promotion to the Bundesliga this past season.  Kyle McCarthy wrote some words on Morales and his move to Ingolstadt.  And according to Greg Seltzer, the club is currently working on a contract extension for Morales.

This is from last week, but Jonathan Spector is going to stay at Birmingham City.

While Spector is staying at Birmingham City, Will Packwood is no longer with the club and was last seen training with the New England Revolution.  But it doesn’t look like the Revs will be signing Packwood.

Grant Wahl is hearing that Rubio Rubin is drawing interest from other teams in Europe but he is staying at Utrecht.

The US U-20 team finished up its training in Australia with a 2-1 win over Australia’s U-20 team (highlights).  They then flew to New Zealand yesterday after the last few guys made their arrival down south where the U-20 World Cup will begin a week from Saturday.

While Gedion Zelalem made his US debut in that 2-1 win over Australia, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger told NBC’s ProSoccerTalk that Zelalem might be sent out on loan next season to get playing time.

J.R. Eskilson talked to US U-20 goalkeeper Zack Steffen about being one of the more experienced players on the U-20 team.

Here is a Bundesliga video on Timothy Chandler.

According to a report out of Germany, Alfred Koroma is currently training with Eintracht Frankfurt.

Christian Eissele scored one of the more interesting goals you will see on Monday.

Take this quiz on Premier League Americans.  I was able to get 14 out of 15 correct.

It looks like Benji Joya and Juan Ocegueda will be participating in the next US U-23 camp.

Sebastien Ibeagha is no longer with Horsens in Denmark and is already with Fram Reykjavik in Iceland.

Will has updated his US Soccer highlight video bank thingie.

Tim Howard and Everton have some new and pretty blah blue jerseys for next year.  At least Howard’s goalkeeper kit is kind of fun.  While Terrence Boyd and RB Leipzig have a new white home kit for next season.

And finally, enjoy this pawn shop commercial featuring Joe Corona.

I am headed out of town this weekend on Friday for some fun so the site might be a little light on updates on my end.  Enjoy your Memorial Day weekend.

Tab Ramos announces U-20 World Cup roster
May 7, 2015 (7:31 AM) by Howie Michaels

Let’s all overreact!

GOALKEEPERS (3): Jeff Caldwell (University of Virginia), Ethan Horvath (Molde FK), Zack Steffen (Freiburg)
DEFENDERS (6): Cameron Carter-Vickers (Tottenham Hotspur), Matthew Miazga (New York Red Bulls), Shaquell Moore (Unattached), Erik Palmer-Brown (Sporting Kansas City), Desevio Payne (FC Groningen), John Requejo (Club Tijuana)
MIDFIELDERS (6): Kellyn Acosta (FC Dallas), Paul Arriola (Club Tijuana), Russell Canouse (Hoffenheim), Marco Delgado (Toronto FC), Emerson Hyndman (Fulham), Joel Soñora (Boca Juniors)
FORWARDS (5): Jordan Allen (Real Salt Lake), Bradford Jamieson IV (LA Galaxy), Rubio Rubin (Utrecht), Maki Tall (Red Star), Tommy Thompson (San Jose Earthquakes)

Ramos can add one more name by May 15. You’d assume Junior Flores, Geldion Zelaem, and Romain Gall might be considered for that. The U.S. kicks off the tournament May 30 against Myanmar, or Burma as some of our old school readers might think of them.

One notable absence explained:

A bunch of links for Thursday
January 29, 2015 (12:59 AM) by Matt Benson

A few more USMNT things before moving on from yesterday’s loss.

In case you missed the game, here are the goals.  And Matthew Doyle took a quick look at the US’s attempt to play the 3-5-2.

As for some “fun” stats/facts courtesy of Paul Carr and Paul Kennedy:

* The US is now winless in five straight games for the first time since 2007.
* The US has now allowed nine goals over a three-game span for the first time since 1993.
* The US has allowed eight goals in the first 10 minutes of games since 2013 after allowing only seven such goals between 2007 and 2012.
* The US has been outscored 9-0 in the second half of its last five games.
* The US is winless in its last four games when leading at the half after going 19-0-2 in Klinsmann’s first 21 games when leading at the half.
* And finally, the US still only has one win in its last 18 games against South American teams.

One of the big non-USMNT news stories from yesterday was Sacha Kljestan signing with the New York Red Bulls.

It looks like Alejandro Bedoya is working on a new contract with Nantes.  Marc Stein’s sources say that Bedoya also has been drawing some interest from Germany, England and MLS.

The New York Times wrote some words on DeAndre Yedlin earlier this week.  And new Tottenham teammate and fellow American Brad Friedel talked about Yedlin to some UK press.

We posted yesterday in the US-Chile pre-game primer about how Gedion Zelalem is currently ineligible to play for the US, but Grant Wahl/Sunil Gulati are making it sound like the FIFA exception will go through and he will be eligible later this spring.

Also in the link above, Wahl is hearing that US U-20 center back Cameron Carter-Vickers could be training with Tottenham’s first team in the coming weeks.

Getting back to Zelalem for a second, he went the full 90 in Arsenal’s 1-0 loss to Atletico Madrid in UEFA Youth League action earlier this week.  Dembakwi Yomba did not dress for Atletico Madrid as it looks like he picked up some kind of knee injury.

Sticking with the youth theme, Jeff Carlisle put together his list of Top 10 US players currently under the age of 21.  His #1 is Emerson Hyndman.

Another player on that list, Julian Green, is healthy again and thinks he can learn from his loan away Bayern Munich.

Speaking of health issues, Tim Howard appears to be ahead of schedule with the rehabbing of his calf injury and could return to the field sooner than first believed.

As for another goalie, Zack Steffen talked to Brian Sciaretta about the U-20 World Cup and Freiburg.

Steffen’s U-20 teammate, Matt Miazga, is in Qatar with RB Leipzig on a training stint/trial.  He had to be subbed out of a scrimmage the other day with an injury, but New York Red Bulls manager Jesse Marsch claims it is just a knock.

Steven Goff has your monthly Freddy Adu update.

Alejandro Guido scored his first goal with Tijuana last week in Copa MX action and he followed that up with another goal in Copa MX action on Tuesday.

It looks like Tim Ream had a nice game earlier this week against Rotherham.

Remember Mike Grella?  He is currently with the New York Red Bulls as a trialist.

Ryan Adeleye was last seen in Israel with Hapoel Ashkelon and now he has signed with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers.

And finally, some might remember the US-Mexico rivalry movie that was being made a few years ago called Gringos at the Gate.  Well, it is finally on the internet for your viewing pleasure.

US U-20 vs. El Salvador Highlights
January 24, 2015 (4:35 PM) by Matt Benson

The US U-20 team is headed to New Zealand for the U-20 World Cup after beating El Salvador 2-0 today.  Goals came from Ben Spencer and Paul Arriola, while Zack Steffen made a huge save on a PK with the score only 1-0 in the second half.  Here are the highlights.

A variety of links for Thursday
December 18, 2014 (1:22 AM) by Matt Benson

A bunch of stuff from this week and other stuff from last week that I meant to post but didn’t, so let’s get after it.

Yesterday was a good day for Americans in Europe.  John Brooks continued his recent strong play by scoring his first goal since THAT goal against Ghana (highlights from yesterday).  Over in Belgium, Sacha Kljestan came off the bench and scored a goal in Anderlecht’s 3-0 win in the Belgian Cup (highlights).  Also in the Belgian Cup, Kenny Saief scored for Gent in their 4-1 win (no highlights found yet).  And back in Germany, Alfredo Morales was credited with an assist in Ingolstadt’s 2-1 win, but his teammate did most of the dirty work (highlights).

Catching up on some other goals from the past few days while I was gone this weekend.  Junior Flores scored in Borussia Dormund’s 1-1 draw to Anderlecht in UEFA Youth League action, but he had to be subbed off after 30 minutes after picking up a concussion and will miss a little time.

Rubio Rubin also scored his second professional goal over the weekend in Utrecht’s 3-1 loss (highlights).

Jon-Paul Pittman scored a goal for Grimsby Town in FA Trophy First Round action.

And while it wasn’t a goal, Alejandro Bedoya had an assist over the weekend in Nantes’ 2-1 win (highlights).

US Soccer confirmed seven friendlies for 2015 at some point last week.  Plus we have reports of a possible friendly against Brazil for September.

And CONCACAF announced the venues and dates of next summer’s Gold Cup.

Catching up on in-house links, Will had a good goalkeeper discussion with four collegiate goalkeepers prior to last weekend’s College Cup.  And RJ caught back up with Jake Keegan to see how the Irish promotion playoffs went (spoiler alert: they went well).

Howie posted some links about Brek Shea heading back to the US and Orlando City, but Greg Seltzer is hearing that some other Championship teams might be still interested in his services.

Herculez Gomez is headed back to Puebla.  This will be his seventh different stint with a Liga MX team in the last five seasons, but he would be returning to his original stint/team where he won his scoring title in 2010.

Ventura Alvarado and Club America won the Apertura title this past fall so here are two interviews for you, one in English and one in Spanish.

The latest Jozy Altidore rumors have Werder Bremen wanting him on loan in January.

Will Packwood is back at Birmingham City and out for a few weeks after injuring his groin on loan with Colchester United.

Vice Sports caught up with Aron Johannsson to talk about finally getting over his various injuries of the past six months.

LA Galaxy forward Jack McBean is doing his annual MLS-offseason-training-stint-in-Europe with Charlton Athletic.

Steven Goff talked to Brad Friedel about a variety of topics right here.  Tim Howard has also retracted some of his comments about Friedel blocking his move to Manchester United.

Dom Dwyer signed a new contract with Sporting Kansas City which will keep him in the US for a while longer.  Since he received his green card in 2012, he would be eligible to apply for citizenship in 2017.

Tab Ramos and the US U-20 team is down in Honduras this week for some friendlies.  The initial roster had Zack Steffen and Santiago Castano as the goalkeepers and they were both in the news this past week.  Steffen signed with Freiburg in Germany, while Castano turned down the US for Colombia’s U-20 team.

Brian Sciaretta introduces us to the next potential German-American on the radar, Hamburg fullback Ashton Götz.  But Götz has a ways to go before playing for the US.

Like I mentioned towards the top of this post, John Brooks has been playing well for Hertha Berlin recently and received some good praise from manager Jos Luhukay.

If you have been around this site from the beginning, you might remember the name Nate Weiss.  Weiss has played a little here and there (Lativa, Sweden and Germany to name a few countries) and now he is working on getting his UEFA coaching licenses.

The Fighting Bob Bradleys will be coming to the US in February to partake in the Portland Timbers’ preseason tournament.

Joe Gyau didn’t travel with Borussia Dortmund’s U-23 team this past weekend due to how his knee has reacted lately.  Probably in his best interest to take it slow and make sure everything is fine.

Bobby Wood doesn’t appear to in 1860 Munich’s plans going forward.

And finally, this photo of DaMarcus Beasley, Kyle Beckerman and Landon Donovan is awesome.

Tab Ramos names final U-20 training camp roster of 2014
December 12, 2014 (12:04 PM) by Howie Michaels

With the CONCACAF U-20 Championship less than a month away, Tab Ramos and the U-20s are off the Honduras next week for a final camp and pair of friendlies against the Honduran U-20s. Nineteen players comprise the camp:

Goalkeepers (2) : Santiago Castaño (New York Red Bulls; Union City, N.J.), Zack Steffen (SC Freiburg; Downingtown, Pa.)
Defenders (6): Michael Amick (UCLA; Sunnyvale, Calif.), Conor Donovan (North Carolina State; Fuquay-Varina, N.C.), Matthew Miazga (New York Red Bulls; Clifton, N.J.), Shaquell Moore (Unattached; Powder Springs, Ga.), John Requejo (Club Tijuana; Carpinteria, Calif.),Tyler Turner (Orlando City SC; West Haven, Conn.)
Midfielders (7): Kellyn Acosta (FC Dallas; Plano, Texas), Fernando Arce (Club Tijuana; Chula Vista, Calif.), Russell Canouse (TSG 1899 Hoffenheim; Lancaster, Pa.), Marco Delgado (Toronto FC; Glendora, Calif.), Romain Gall (Columbus Crew; Herndon, Va.), Lynden Gooch (Sunderland AFC; Santa Cruz, Calif.), Joel Soñora (CA Boca Juniors; Buenos Aires, Argentina)
Forwards (4): Paul Arriola (Club Tijuana; Chula Vista, Calif.), Bradford Jamieson IV (LA Galaxy; Los Angeles, Calif.), Amando Moreno (Club Tijuana; Morganville, N.J.), Tommy Thompson (San Jose Earthquakes; Loomis, Calif.)

Recently-signed Freiburg keeper Zack Steffen is on the squad, so I assume that he will indeed be in Jamaica next month.

Zack Steffen is officially a member of Freiburg
December 12, 2014 (9:05 AM) by Howie Michaels

The College Cup semifinals are tonight (read a roundtable with some collegiate goalkeepers here!). One of the top goalkeepers in the college game, Zack Steffen, won’t be there after his 4th-seeded Maryland Terrapins were upset by the Cinderellas from UMBC, but he won’t be there next year, either, because as has previously been reported he has signed with Freiburg. The signing is now official.

I would assume he’ll be spending more time with Freiburg II, who currently sit 8th in the 4th-division Regionalliga Südwest. He’ll have to beat out 20 year-old German Konstantin Fuhry with the reserve squad.

He’ll be one of three young Americans at Freiburg, joining the injured defender Caleb Stanko and midfielder Ethan Sonis. It will be interesting to see if this impacts his availability for U-20 qualifying next month; I doubt it given that Freiburg II is off until late February, but you never know.

A bunch of links for Tuesday

A bunch of random stuff for you.

The big news of the weekend was that Terrence Boyd tore his ACL again.  Talk about some crappy luck as he was just getting back into form.

Here is what the first half of 2015 looks like for the USMNT.

In the event you missed this post from last Friday, here are two things on DeAndre Yedlin.

Steven Goff is reporting that US U-20 goalkeeper Zack Steffen is close to signing with Freiburg in Germany.  Freiburg currently have Caleb Stanko on their roster and used to have Eric Lickert until this past season.

Tim Howard was named Fútbol de Primera Player of the Year last week.  The award is given to the top USMNT player each year and voted on by various journalists.  This was Howard’s first year winning the award.

Howard has also been in the news lately due to his new book.  ESPNFC got some exclusive excerpts from the book.  In Part 1, he claims Brad Friedel didn’t help him get his UK work permit (The PFA came out saying Friedel didn’t send in anything with regard to denying Tim Howard a work permit).  In Part 2, he talks about Jurgen Klinsmann micromanaging the USMNT.

Greg Seltzer gives us some teams (or at least some leagues) interested in Mix Diskerud’s services.  Diskerud is also talking to Rosenborg.

The Fighting Bob Bradleys of Stabæk will be without Andrew Jacobson next season as he returned to NYCFC after his loan ended.  And it looks like Michael Stephens is leaving the club to sign with the Chicago Fire according to one report out of Norway.

Shane O’Neill returned to the US after training/trailing with Sheffield Wednesday.  They will keep an eye on him and he picked up a shoulder injury in the last training session.

Omar Salgado was traded from the Vancouver Whitecaps to NYCFC, but he is expected to be transferred out to an unnamed international club.

Josh Gatt has no timetable of an official return to the field, but he is expected to re-join Molde for preseason training and possibly miss the first few games of the season.  Gatt suffered a second ACL-related injury last season.

Fresh off one of the humorous moments of Sunday’s MLS Cup, A.J. Soares wants to test things in Europe and holds an Italian passport.

Soon-to-be-winter-silly-season rumor of the week, Southampton are eyeing Lee Nguyen.

The Liga MX Apertura final will feature Tigres (Jose Torres and Herculez Gomez) against Club America (Ventura Alvarado).

And here are two reminders that Jermaine Jones is awesome: Reason 1 and Reason 2.
