Your Thursday morning link extravaganza
February 5, 2015 (1:03 AM) by Matt Benson

Let’s start off with some USMNT stuff.

I am already over Fitness-gate, but Jurgen Klinsman talked some more to Fox Sports 1 about the lack of fitness of the team.  Alexi Lalas disagrees with him.

The team had a special guest at training yesterday.

In the not a total shock department, Jermaine Jones (a midfielder playing centerback) was a little uncomfortable playing a 3-5-2 (a formation new to this group of players).

Kyle McCarthy takes a look at the behind the scenes stuff that happens in order for the USMNT to fly down to Chile for a friendly.

Hankering for a US-Panama preview already?  The Total Soccer Show podcast just uploaded theirs to the interwebs.

Former USMNT goalkeeper Frank Borghi passed away this week.  He will probably be remembered most for his performance against England in the US’s upset at the 1950 World Cup.  Resident goalkeeper historian Will did a good job of collecting news/links/information on Borghi over the last week.

We have had a couple goals so far this week.  Herculez Gomez scored yet another goal for Puebla in Copa MX action on Tuesday (highlights).  Dating back to his first stint with Puebla, it was his 13th goal in 22 career games across all competitions with Puebla

Nermin Crnkic scored a goal yesterday in Jablonec’s 2-0 win over FC Copenhagen in something called the Atlantic Cup (highlights).  It appears to be a friendly/winter break tournament that no one attends.

Heading back to Mexico last night, 20-year-old Jesus Vazquez scored a goal in Leones Negros’ 2-0 win over Necaxa.  Looking at our goal tracker, that is already the fourth goal scored by an American against Necaxa since January 21.

Sticking with Copa MX, Joe Corona wore the arm band for Tijuana last night in their 3-2 win over Coras de Tepic.  Fellow Americans Alejandro Guido, John Requejo Jr. and Paul Arriola also saw the field for the Xolos.  Jon Arnold got some quotes from Arriola following the match.

Also in action on Wednesday, Rubio Rubin went the full 90 minutes in Utrecht’s 1-0 loss to Willem II.  While Tim Ream went 90 minutes in Bolton’s 2-1 loss to Liverpool in their FA Cup fourth-round replay.

After leaving MLS for Mexico and Santos Laguna, Eric Avila is returning to MLS/Orlando City on loan for the 2015 season.

Because projecting is fun, here is Bayern Munich’s starting lineup for 2025, which includes Julian Green!

Kyle Scott got to train with Chelsea’s first team this week.

It looks like Galway FC will have a second American at the club this season as Kevin Garcia made the move from Swedish side IFK Luleå to Ireland.

Will talked to goalkeeper Matt Pyzdrowski about his move to Helsingborgs IF and how he started his career.

Brian Sciaretta caught up with Tab Ramos this week to talk about the US U-20 team.

And finally, Greg Seltzer updates us on which clubs aborad have featured the most Americans over the years.

Leones Negros vs. Necaxa Highlights
February 4, 2015 (8:56 PM) by Matt Benson

Jesus Vazquez got the start and scored a goal in Leones Negros’ 2-0 win over Necaxa in Copa MX action.  The goal is the 20-year-old’s first since April.  Here are some highlights with his goal coming at the 1:00 mark.

Friday morning links
October 24, 2014 (1:09 AM) by Matt Benson

A few links before the weekend.

The USMNT will have a second friendly next month in Europe as they will take on Colombia at Craven Cottage in London.

The latest FIFA rankings came out earlier this week and the US dropped six places to No. 23.  They are still the third-highest ranked team in CONCACAF as Costa Rica comes in at No. 16 and Mexico at No. 17.

Mix Diskerud had to be subbed out after 36 minutes in last weekend’s game due to an injury, but he just missed a couple practices this week and returned to training yesterday.  Sounds like a good chance he plays on Sunday.

Also in the injury department, Aron Johannsson is expected to dress with AZ Alkmaar this weekend.  Johannsson played with AZ’s reserves earlier this week and will get a chance to play in his first game with the senior team against Groningen on Saturday.

While those guys are coming back from injuries, Timothy Chandler will likely miss Eintracht Frankfurt’s game this weekend due to an abductor muscle issue.

After missing basically the entire season after tearing his achilles tendon, Zarek Valentin returned to full training this week in Norway.

Freddy Adu hasn’t done much at Jagodina in Serbia this season and could be making a move to Sweden come January.

Geoff Cameron is back from injury and is ready to fight for a position at center back or central midfield.

Ives Galarcep talked to Greg Garza earlier this week about the crazy three-year run Garza has been having.  I remember when he was sort of this mythical player stuck in Traffic Sports purgatory.

Franco Panizo caught up with Alfredo Morales to talk about the progress he is making at Ingolstadt and with the USMNT.

Jose Torres scored a pretty bitchin’ goal in Copa MX action earlier this week.

Gedion Zelalem went the full 90 minutes in Arsenal’s 4-3 loss to Anderlecht in the UEFA Youth League on Tuesday.  On Wednesday, Junior Flores got the start and played 77 minutes in Borussia Dortmund’s 3-2 loss to Galatasaray.

Marc Pelosi has been training some with Liverpool’s senior team this past week.

Brian Sciaretta talked to 16-year-old English-American defender Cameron Carter-Vickers about his trip with the US U-23 team down to Brazil and how US Soccer found him.

While we are learning about some new dual-national players, Tom Marshall introduces us to Leones Negros midfielder Jesus Vazquez.

Aleks Gogic signed with Reading last year, but it looks like the 18-year-old goalkeeper must be on loan with Southern League Premier Division (seventh tier!) side Slough Town F.C. as he played in a game with them last Saturday.
