This week has been a crazy one for me and of course 2354356456 guys have scored goals this week. As always, our goal tracker has a bunch of information on who scored and links to those available highlights.
GOALKEEPERS (3): Jeff Caldwell (University of Virginia), Ethan Horvath (Molde FK), Zack Steffen (Freiburg)
DEFENDERS (6): Cameron Carter-Vickers (Tottenham Hotspur), Matthew Miazga (New York Red Bulls), Shaquell Moore (Unattached), Erik Palmer-Brown (Sporting Kansas City), Desevio Payne (FC Groningen), John Requejo (Club Tijuana)
MIDFIELDERS (6): Kellyn Acosta (FC Dallas), Paul Arriola (Club Tijuana), Russell Canouse (Hoffenheim), Marco Delgado (Toronto FC), Emerson Hyndman (Fulham), Joel Soñora (Boca Juniors)
FORWARDS (5): Jordan Allen (Real Salt Lake), Bradford Jamieson IV (LA Galaxy), Rubio Rubin (Utrecht), Maki Tall (Red Star), Tommy Thompson (San Jose Earthquakes)
Ramos can add one more name by May 15. You’d assume Junior Flores, Geldion Zelaem, and Romain Gall might be considered for that. The U.S. kicks off the tournament May 30 against Myanmar, or Burma as some of our old school readers might think of them.
One notable absence explained:
U20 USYNT WC Roster TBA in about 30 minutes. My contact in England tells me that Novakovic will not be on roster. Reading declined release
Cameron Carter-Vickers (full 90) and Tottenham U21 took on Marc Pelosi (came off the bench for 28 minutes) and Liverpool U21 this past weekend with Liverpool winning 3-1. Since this is a game featuring two young Yanks (and there are extended highlights of the match online), here you go.
As for the mid week so far, Gedion Zelalem help setup a goal for Arsenal’s U-21 team. Michael Orozco had an assist as Puebla won the Copa MX final over Chivas (Herculez Gomez watched from the bench). And Andrija Novakovich scored a goal for Reading’s U-21 team.
The US U-20 team is in Austria this week and here is their roster. They had a 2-2 draw against Qatar yesterday with the US goals coming from Amando Moreno and Conor Donovan.
The US U-23 team will take on Mexico later tonight at the StubHub Center. Here is their roster. Apparently manager Andi Herzog asked Hamburg permission for Julian Green to stay after last week’s friendly against Mexico for this game but they didn’t respond yes to him until Green was already on a plane back to Germany. Herzog also wants to create a pipeline to the USMNT with the U-23 team. And Liviu Bird’s random observation from training earlier this week, Jordan Morris has Type 1 diabetes and tests his blood sugar during training.
For those of you that miss watching grainy Youtube videos of Josh Gatt flying down the wings, we have some good news. He has been cleared to play again after a couple knee surgeries.
Hannover 96 did some shuffling around of their coaching staff and Steve Cherundolo has been promoted to an assistant.
There is nothing really new with Gedion Zelalem, but Steven Goff reminds us where we all stand at the moment.
RB Leipzig announced yesterday that Terrence Boyd has resumed to jogging as he rehabs from his ACL surgery. ESPN’s Doug McIntyre also saw Boyd jogging and riding the exercise bike while he was with the USMNT earlier this month.
It looks like Danny Williams picked up an injury while with the USMNT and his doubtful for this weekend’s game against Blackpool.
Cameron Carter-Vickers and DeAndre Yedlin both played with Tottenham’s U-21 yesterday with CCV wearing the captain’s armband. Here is also a photo gallery from the game.
Another week and another goal by Duane Holmes with Huddersfield Town’s U-21 team. I believe that is the third straight week with a goal. Highlights of their U-21 team usually emerge a few days after the game.
Herculez Gomez likes scoring goals for Puebla and he scored another one last night in a 2-1 win in Copa MX action (highlights). I was also able to find some highlights of Devann Yao’s goal from the weekend (highlights).
Also scoring earlier this week was Jake Keegan in Galway United’s win in Irish League Cup action (highlights). Here is the post-game press conference with Keegan and his manager. Around the 2:50 mark, his manager talks about Kevin Garcia joining the team soon. I am guessing he is waiting for a work permit as I believe it took Keegan a while to get a new one for this season.
Staying in Ireland, St Patrick’s Athletic has signed midfielder Morgan Langley. Langley played in one game for the Philadelphia Union in 2011, but has mainly played his professional soccer with the Harrisburg City Islanders.
The US U-17 team won their third straight game of the CONCACAF U-17 Championship over Guatemala yesterday. Here are some highlights while here are some photos. With nine points through three games, the US can clinch the group and a spot at the FIFA U-17 World Cup with a win over Honduras on Sunday even though they have one more group stage game after that.
We didn’t have any injuries this week, but we had a few goals from some not-so-usual suspects during the midweek games. As always, Roderick has you covered on what happened with The OT Report.
As for some highlights from the past week. Adam Henley scored his first professional goal (highlights). Amando Moreno scored another goal in Copa MX action (highlights). And fresh off his USMNT call-up in January, Julio Morales scored in Copa MX action (highlights).
Conor O’Brien was also credited with an assist this week, but the site that I have been able to get Austrian highlights in the past changed their settings and won’t allow the video player to start for people outside Austria. We also had some other goals this week that don’t have highlights yet, but you can always follow along with our goal tracker.
Speaking of Copa MX, the group stage finished up this past week and the quarterfinals have been figured out. The Tijuana contingent earned the #1 seed and will take on Gabriel Farfan and Chiapas. Everyone’s favorite left back Jonathan Bornstein and Queretaro are the #4 seed and will take on Chivas. Herculez Gomez, Michael Orozco and Puebla are the #2 seed and take on Merida. And Alonso Hernandez and Monterrey (#3 seed) will face UAT.
In his second game since going out on loan, Lynden Gooch scored a goal and was named Man of the Match in Gateshead’s 3-1 win over Wrexham earlier this week.
Friend of the site Jon Arnold was in Mexico City this week for Club America’s CONCACAF Champions League win over Saprissa. After seeing Ventura Alvarado in the flesh, he wrote some words on the centerback.
Björn Maars Johnsen had scored 14 goals in 27 games for Atlético CP in Portugal this season, but he appears to be with Lovech in Bulgaria now. For those out of the loop, he was born in North Carolina but grew up in Norway.
We posted yesterday in the US-Chile pre-game primer about how Gedion Zelalem is currently ineligible to play for the US, but Grant Wahl/Sunil Gulati are making it sound like the FIFA exception will go through and he will be eligible later this spring.
Also in the link above, Wahl is hearing that US U-20 center back Cameron Carter-Vickers could be training with Tottenham’s first team in the coming weeks.
