A few links for Tuesday
June 30, 2015 (12:33 AM) by Matt Benson

Want some links?  Well, here you go.

According to Steven Goff, the USMNT will be taking on Peru in a friendly at RFK Stadium in Washinton D.C. in September.  The US hasn’t faced Peru since a 1-0 win at the 2000 Gold Cup.

Want to impress your friends with knowledge of the US U-23 goalkeeper pool?  Thankfully we have Will to set us straight.

Brian Span went the full 90 minutes and scored his second league goal of the season in Mariehamn’s 1-1 draw to HIFK on Sunday.  Here are the highlights.  A couple other guys scored if you follow along with our goal tracker.

We also had some goals in friendlies over the last couple days.

Kenny Saief scored for Gent in a 2-2 draw to SK Deinze.  Nermin Crnkic scored a goal for Jablonec in a 2-1 win in something called the Minister Cup.  And Andrew Wooten scored a goal for Sandhausen in a 1-0 win over Würzburger Kickers.

Shaq Moore’s Huracán Valencia CF did not win promotion to Spain’s second division (lost 3-1 on aggregate), but you can learn more about his club here.

Desevio Payne looked pretty good for the US U-20 team earlier this month and he signed a professional deal with Groningen last Friday.

US youth player Brooks Lennon was able to get an Irish passport which is allowing him to sign with Liverpool.

The Seattle Times’ Matt Pentz talked to Jordan Morris about his possible future.

Aron Johannsson might be interested in playing in MLS at some point in the near future.

Steve Cherundolo has been named manager of Hannover’s U-17 team.

Joe Funicello’s career has taken a weird twist and he has been named to the coaching staff at BI/Bolungarvik in Iceland.

To go along with his Serbian/Russian interest, Cesar Romero is also getting looked at by some Mexican clubs according to Greg Seltzer.

And finally, today’s sketchy looking website silly season rumor of the day (so it must be true) has Swansea looking at Matt Miazga.

Tab Ramos announces U-20 World Cup roster
May 7, 2015 (7:31 AM) by Howie Michaels

Let’s all overreact!

GOALKEEPERS (3): Jeff Caldwell (University of Virginia), Ethan Horvath (Molde FK), Zack Steffen (Freiburg)
DEFENDERS (6): Cameron Carter-Vickers (Tottenham Hotspur), Matthew Miazga (New York Red Bulls), Shaquell Moore (Unattached), Erik Palmer-Brown (Sporting Kansas City), Desevio Payne (FC Groningen), John Requejo (Club Tijuana)
MIDFIELDERS (6): Kellyn Acosta (FC Dallas), Paul Arriola (Club Tijuana), Russell Canouse (Hoffenheim), Marco Delgado (Toronto FC), Emerson Hyndman (Fulham), Joel Soñora (Boca Juniors)
FORWARDS (5): Jordan Allen (Real Salt Lake), Bradford Jamieson IV (LA Galaxy), Rubio Rubin (Utrecht), Maki Tall (Red Star), Tommy Thompson (San Jose Earthquakes)

Ramos can add one more name by May 15. You’d assume Junior Flores, Geldion Zelaem, and Romain Gall might be considered for that. The U.S. kicks off the tournament May 30 against Myanmar, or Burma as some of our old school readers might think of them.

One notable absence explained:

A bunch of links for Thursday
January 29, 2015 (12:59 AM) by Matt Benson

A few more USMNT things before moving on from yesterday’s loss.

In case you missed the game, here are the goals.  And Matthew Doyle took a quick look at the US’s attempt to play the 3-5-2.

As for some “fun” stats/facts courtesy of Paul Carr and Paul Kennedy:

* The US is now winless in five straight games for the first time since 2007.
* The US has now allowed nine goals over a three-game span for the first time since 1993.
* The US has allowed eight goals in the first 10 minutes of games since 2013 after allowing only seven such goals between 2007 and 2012.
* The US has been outscored 9-0 in the second half of its last five games.
* The US is winless in its last four games when leading at the half after going 19-0-2 in Klinsmann’s first 21 games when leading at the half.
* And finally, the US still only has one win in its last 18 games against South American teams.

One of the big non-USMNT news stories from yesterday was Sacha Kljestan signing with the New York Red Bulls.

It looks like Alejandro Bedoya is working on a new contract with Nantes.  Marc Stein’s sources say that Bedoya also has been drawing some interest from Germany, England and MLS.

The New York Times wrote some words on DeAndre Yedlin earlier this week.  And new Tottenham teammate and fellow American Brad Friedel talked about Yedlin to some UK press.

We posted yesterday in the US-Chile pre-game primer about how Gedion Zelalem is currently ineligible to play for the US, but Grant Wahl/Sunil Gulati are making it sound like the FIFA exception will go through and he will be eligible later this spring.

Also in the link above, Wahl is hearing that US U-20 center back Cameron Carter-Vickers could be training with Tottenham’s first team in the coming weeks.

Getting back to Zelalem for a second, he went the full 90 in Arsenal’s 1-0 loss to Atletico Madrid in UEFA Youth League action earlier this week.  Dembakwi Yomba did not dress for Atletico Madrid as it looks like he picked up some kind of knee injury.

Sticking with the youth theme, Jeff Carlisle put together his list of Top 10 US players currently under the age of 21.  His #1 is Emerson Hyndman.

Another player on that list, Julian Green, is healthy again and thinks he can learn from his loan away Bayern Munich.

Speaking of health issues, Tim Howard appears to be ahead of schedule with the rehabbing of his calf injury and could return to the field sooner than first believed.

As for another goalie, Zack Steffen talked to Brian Sciaretta about the U-20 World Cup and Freiburg.

Steffen’s U-20 teammate, Matt Miazga, is in Qatar with RB Leipzig on a training stint/trial.  He had to be subbed out of a scrimmage the other day with an injury, but New York Red Bulls manager Jesse Marsch claims it is just a knock.

Steven Goff has your monthly Freddy Adu update.

Alejandro Guido scored his first goal with Tijuana last week in Copa MX action and he followed that up with another goal in Copa MX action on Tuesday.

It looks like Tim Ream had a nice game earlier this week against Rotherham.

Remember Mike Grella?  He is currently with the New York Red Bulls as a trialist.

Ryan Adeleye was last seen in Israel with Hapoel Ashkelon and now he has signed with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers.

And finally, some might remember the US-Mexico rivalry movie that was being made a few years ago called Gringos at the Gate.  Well, it is finally on the internet for your viewing pleasure.

Quick link action for Tuesday
January 27, 2015 (12:45 AM) by Matt Benson

Let’s get right to the point with these.

The USMNT are in Chile ahead of their friendly on Wednesday.  Here is a photo gallery from Chile.

US Soccer talked to Jurgen Klinsmann and DeAndre Yedlin about calling Yedlin into camp.

Looking for Chile’s roster?  You can find it at the bottom of this link.

USMNT assistant coach Andreas Herzog was named head coach of the US U-23/Olympic team.

Scott French talked to Marc Pelosi about coming back from his broken leg to making his first USMNT camp.

The latest Juan Agudelo rumor has him talking to the New England Revolution.  If the deal is true, that already fun team just got another fun piece.

It looks like Jurgen Klinsmann is trying to help Bobby Wood find a new club.

Fresh off qualifying for the U-20 World Cup, Matt Miazga flew to Qatar and could be trialing/transferring to RB Leipzig.

Speaking of the US U-20 team, in case you missed it, here are highlights of their 2-0 win over El Salvador to qualify for New Zealand.  Romain Gall shared the Golden Boot with Mexico’s Hirving Lozano with each scoring five goals throughout the tournament.

Greg Garza was named to Medio Tiempo’s Liga MX Team of the Week.

We had a few goals this weekend.  Kenny Saief scored for Gent while Jon-Paul Pittman scored for Grimsby Town.  Alfredo Morales scored a goal for Ingolstadt in a friendly.  And Sebastian Lletget scored a goal for West Ham’s U-21 team.

After injuring his groin while out on loan in December, Will Packwood is back in training with Birmingham City.

And finally, Tab Ramos’ son, Alex, has signed a professional contract with Pachuca.  Also of note, he was born in Mexico while Tab was playing with Tigres.

Thursday morning linkage
October 9, 2014 (12:01 AM) by Matt Benson

Let’s get into it.

Here are a bunch of tidbits from the first couple days of the USMNT camp in Boston.  The big news from yesterday was that Jozy Altidore said he is open to a move away from Sunderland if his situation doesn’t improve.  And Greg Seltzer breaks out the speculation-mobile on possible Altidore destinations.

In case you missed it, US Soccer made a great Landon Donovan tribute video.  Even without video of the actual goal, the goal against Algeria never gets old.  ESPN’s Jeff Carlisle takes a look at the early Landon Donovan days.

Ives Galarcep is at the camp and talked to Joe Gyau.

As for some injury news, Terrence Boyd was officially cleared to return to training with RB Leipzig earlier this week and here are a few photos of him back in action from yesterday.

Also, a Mr. Geoffrey Cameron is back to full fitness.

Tim Ream will have a new manager at Bolton as Dougie Freedman stepped down last week.  That is probably too bad for Stuart Holden, as even though he was wasn’t the manager who brought Holden over, Freedman seemed to like him.  Hopefully the new manager will give Holden a chance once he returns from injury.

Tim Howard wants to see more American goalkeepers in the Premier League.

Speaking of the Premier League, some clubs are now open to talking about possibly playing some league games outside of England.  If this were to happen, you would have to think a couple would be played in the US.

I posted a link to one earlier this week, but it looks like Rubio Rubin made multiple Eredivisie Teams of the Week.

According to a report out of Poland, NY Red Bulls’ Matt Miazga turned down a call-up with Poland’s U-20 team to play with the US U-23 team down in Brazil.

Jose Montes de Oca, a 19-year-old forward from Santa Ana, California, made his debut this past weekend with the Liga MX club Leon.

Jann George has been scoring a bunch for Greuther Fürth’s U-23 team this year in the Regionalliga and he scored with the senior team in a friendly on Wednesday.

Want your League of Ireland First Division fix?  Here are some things on Pat McCann and Jake Keegan.

And finally, US Soccer Development Academy goalkeeper Bryce Billington made the newspaper in Aberdeen.
