Tab Ramos announces U-20 World Cup roster
May 7, 2015 (7:31 AM) by Howie Michaels

Let’s all overreact!

GOALKEEPERS (3): Jeff Caldwell (University of Virginia), Ethan Horvath (Molde FK), Zack Steffen (Freiburg)
DEFENDERS (6): Cameron Carter-Vickers (Tottenham Hotspur), Matthew Miazga (New York Red Bulls), Shaquell Moore (Unattached), Erik Palmer-Brown (Sporting Kansas City), Desevio Payne (FC Groningen), John Requejo (Club Tijuana)
MIDFIELDERS (6): Kellyn Acosta (FC Dallas), Paul Arriola (Club Tijuana), Russell Canouse (Hoffenheim), Marco Delgado (Toronto FC), Emerson Hyndman (Fulham), Joel Soñora (Boca Juniors)
FORWARDS (5): Jordan Allen (Real Salt Lake), Bradford Jamieson IV (LA Galaxy), Rubio Rubin (Utrecht), Maki Tall (Red Star), Tommy Thompson (San Jose Earthquakes)

Ramos can add one more name by May 15. You’d assume Junior Flores, Geldion Zelaem, and Romain Gall might be considered for that. The U.S. kicks off the tournament May 30 against Myanmar, or Burma as some of our old school readers might think of them.

One notable absence explained:

Some links before the weekend
January 23, 2015 (12:36 AM) by Matt Benson

Some reading material as you countdown until the weekend.

Coming off a 1-0 win over Trinidad & Tobago on Wednesday (highlights), the US U-20 team found out that it will be playing El Salvador on Saturday in the win-or-go-home playoff match to determine who will go to this summer’s U-20 World Cup in New Zealand.  The game will be on Fox Sports 2 at 5:00 PM Eastern.  The US will have a chance to get some revenge on El Salvador as they knocked out the 2012 U-23 team from qualifying for the 2012 Olympics. (UPDATE – Looks like the game is now on Fox Soccer Plus).

US Soccer also put up a video on Tommy Thompson yesterday.

Speaking of the U-23 team, Ives Galarcep decided to guess at a possible Olympic qualifying team of MLS players since some of the European-based played might not get released for qualification.

Joe Corona returned from his broken foot to score in Tijuana’s Copa MX match on Wednesday (highlights).  Jon Arnold (who has been everywhere this week) was at Estadio Caliente on Wednesday and got some post-game quotes from Corona.  Tijuana’s website also got some words from Corona following the game.

Jon Arnold also spoke to Mix Diskerud this week at the USMNT camp.

In case you missed it on Wednesday, Sacha Kljestan scored two nearly identical goals in Anderlecht’s Belgian Cup win (highlights).  And Eric Lichaj was subbed off after only 32 minutes in Nottingham Forest’s 3-2 loss to Fulham.

Still unemployed, but apparently Juan Agudelo is mulling over some offers.

For those of you with a Darlington Nagbe-to-USMNT countdown clock, you can probably move the time up a bit.  Most people thought he would become a US citizen at the end of 2015 but it now looks like it could be September according to Portland Timbers owner Merritt Paulson.

Brad Guzan did a little Q&A action with ESPN FC this week.

With the Bundesliga on winter break, Greg Seltzer decided to do a midseason report card on John Brooks, Timothy Chandler, Julian Green, Joe Gyau, Fabian Johnson and Caleb Stanko.

Mukwelle Akale turned 18 recently so he officially joined Villarreal this week.

Giuseppe Gentile, who bounced around USL Pro/NASL last season, has signed with Swiss Challenge League club FC Chiasso.

And finally, Kevin Dzierzawski is headed on loan to Scottish League One side Peterhead.  Dzierzawski has been with Queen of the South in Scotland since 2013-14.

Enjoy the weekend.

December 12, 2014 (12:04 PM) by Howie Michaels

With the CONCACAF U-20 Championship less than a month away, Tab Ramos and the U-20s are off the Honduras next week for a final camp and pair of friendlies against the Honduran U-20s. Nineteen players comprise the camp:

Goalkeepers (2) : Santiago Castaño (New York Red Bulls; Union City, N.J.), Zack Steffen (SC Freiburg; Downingtown, Pa.)
Defenders (6): Michael Amick (UCLA; Sunnyvale, Calif.), Conor Donovan (North Carolina State; Fuquay-Varina, N.C.), Matthew Miazga (New York Red Bulls; Clifton, N.J.), Shaquell Moore (Unattached; Powder Springs, Ga.), John Requejo (Club Tijuana; Carpinteria, Calif.),Tyler Turner (Orlando City SC; West Haven, Conn.)
Midfielders (7): Kellyn Acosta (FC Dallas; Plano, Texas), Fernando Arce (Club Tijuana; Chula Vista, Calif.), Russell Canouse (TSG 1899 Hoffenheim; Lancaster, Pa.), Marco Delgado (Toronto FC; Glendora, Calif.), Romain Gall (Columbus Crew; Herndon, Va.), Lynden Gooch (Sunderland AFC; Santa Cruz, Calif.), Joel Soñora (CA Boca Juniors; Buenos Aires, Argentina)
Forwards (4): Paul Arriola (Club Tijuana; Chula Vista, Calif.), Bradford Jamieson IV (LA Galaxy; Los Angeles, Calif.), Amando Moreno (Club Tijuana; Morganville, N.J.), Tommy Thompson (San Jose Earthquakes; Loomis, Calif.)

Recently-signed Freiburg keeper Zack Steffen is on the squad, so I assume that he will indeed be in Jamaica next month.

Friday morning links
July 18, 2014 (12:35 AM) by Matt Benson

A bunch of links for this Friday.

As Howie posted last night, Matt Besler is in talks with Sporting Kansas City on getting a new contract, although he hasn’t totally dismissed the possibility of playing overseas.  While Greg Seltzer told us earlier this week that Sunderland was one of the teams expressing interest in Besler, the Evening Chronicle is hearing that the Black Cats have not made a bid and don’t plan on making one either.  All this said, I think Besler will probably end up staying in Kansas City and I really don’t have a problem with that.  Nothing wrong for him to have a Eddie Pope-like career.

If you want more transfer talk, Greg Seltzer was on yesterday’s episode of Soccer Morning with Jason Davis.  He begins talking about the 11-minute mark and goes over some stuff on DeAndre Yedlin, Matt Besler (before last night’s news), Graham Zusi, Mix Diskerud, Brek Shea and a couple others.

Speaking of Brek Shea, he was named to Stoke City’s 23-man roster for the Potters’ preseason tour of Germany.

The latest FIFA world rankings came out yesterday with the US dropping two spots to #15.  Costa Rica was one of the big winners, moving up 12 spots to #16.  And this month is the first time that CONCACAF has had three teams in the Top 18 since March of 2004.

For those few people that missed it earlier this week, the Ecuadorian Football Federation claims that the US and Ecuador will play in a friendly against each other in October.

As I post this, about 40% of you think Jermaine Jones’ goal vs. Portugal was your favorite US goal from the World Cup, which leads the pack.  Go vote here.

Mix Diskerud came off the bench and was first credited with a goal, which was later changed to an own goal, in Rosenborg’s upset 2-1 loss to Sligo Rovers in Europa League action (highlights).  Also in Europa League action yesterday, Sean Reynolds came off the bench for 20 minutes in FH’s 1-1 draw to Neman.  And Pablo Punyed went 90 minutes in Stjarnan’s 2-2 draw to Motherwell.  The second legs will be next Thursday.

According to Earnie Stewart, Aron Johannsson’s ankle injury was actually a long-term injury that has been bugging him prior to the World Cup.

“He’s had this injury for a longer while than at the U.S. national team,” Stewart said in an telephone interview. “It was something that you could play with; it wasn’t a problem to. I’ve played with the same problem myself. Once it’s time to rest, it’s something that can aggravate you every time you step out on the field.”

Jozy Altidore told the Sunderland Echo that his injury in the World Cup was the low point of his career.  He is expected to be almost fully fit once he returns to Sunderland.

If you are reading this before 1 PM Eastern on Friday, turn on beIN Sports as they will be showing Terrence Boyd and RB Leipzig taking on PSG in a friendly (h/t Jon Arnold).

Bayern Munich have updated their website and Julian Green is listed under the first team players.  His online bio also tells us that he is a Gemini.  Bayern Munich have also launched an English version of their site dedicated to the US.

The US U-20 team defeated Bermuda, 4-0, in their second match of the NTC Invitational on Wednesday.  The goals were provided by Andrija Novakovich, Zach Pfeffer, Tommy Thompson and an own goal.  Here are some highlights (I see you, Tommy Thompson) and some post-game reactions.  The US’s final game is tonight against Australia at the StubHub Center at 7 PM and admission/parking are free.  If I didn’t have plans already, I would be headed down there.

Liga MX also starts up tonight and Tom Marshall fills you in on where all the Americans will be playing this fall.

According to Sky Sports, Gboly Ariyibi is on trial with Burnley.  Ariyibi ended last season on loan with Tranmere Rovers then became a free agent this summer once his contract with Leeds expired.

Bobby Wood got the start and played 72 minutes on the wing in a 4-3-3 in 1860 Munich’s 3-2 loss to Borussia Möchengladbach in a friendly earlier this week.  Here is a photo of Wood in action.

Sebastian Lletget actually played with West Ham’s first team on Wednesday in a 0-0 draw to Ipswich Town in a friendly, coming off the bench in the second half.

Southampton’s website has an interview up with goalkeeper Cody Cropper.

Brian Sciaretta caught up with Caleb Stanko as he tries to break into Freiburg’s first team this season.

And finally, I personally think the ESPYs are really stupid, but the USMNT won this year for “Best Moment” for its win over Ghana.  And it looks like the guys who could attend had a good time, so good for them.

Enjoy the weekend.
