A bunch of youthful links for Thursday
August 27, 2015 (12:03 AM) by Matt Benson

It has been a good week for US youth players.

Lynden Gooch scored in his third straight U21 game over the weekend (highlights), which led to him making his Sunderland senior team debut in their Capital One Cup win over Exeter City (photo).  And he spoke to Sunderland’s website following his debut.

Gedion Zelalem officially went on loan to Rangers this week.  Rangers’ website has a photo gallery of his first training session and an interview with him.  Then he went out to make his debut in yesterday’s Scottish Cup match against Airdrieonians and end up with two assists (and a hockey assist on a third goal) in the 5-0 win (highlights).

Andrija Novakovich scored a goal over the weekend in Reading U21s’ 2-1 win over Liverpool (highlights).

Andrija Novakovich’s former teammate at Reading, Aleks Gogic, spoke to Will about his time at Reading and his current stint with the Nike Academy.

Julian Green scored a goal in Bayern Munich II’s 2-1 win against Bayreuth on Tuesday.  Still no highlights available just yet, but here is a photo of Green in action.

Amando Moreno scored another goal with Tijuana’s U20 team over the weekend.  That gives him three goals on the season at the U20 level.

Cody Cropper got the start and made a couple saves in MK Dons’ 2-1 win over Cardiff City in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday (highlights).

A slight break from the youth train.  Geoff Cameron scored the clinching penalty kick (and it was nicely taken) in Stoke City’s 1-1 (8-7 on PKs) victory over Luton Town in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday (highlights).  And Matt Taylor has been on fire for Saarbrücken, scoring over the weekend against Pirmasens (highlights) and this week against Spielberg (highlights).

But you don’t care about these vets, you want more information on youth players.

The last time we heard about the US U-17 team, they lost their first game of the Vaclav Jezek Tournament.  They followed that up with draws against Slovenia and Slovakia.  Then finished the tournament with a win over Ukraine.

While he plays with Fulham’s U21 team, Emerson Hyndman has been called in to the US U-23s’ September camp.

US U-17 forward (and dual national) Kai Koreniuk has accepted a call-up with Netherlands’ U-18 team.

Josh Deaver has three different tweets about Ben Lederman’s current situation with Barcelona.

O When The Yanks gives us an update on Djair Parfitt-Williams’ citizenship.  He has become a regular with West Ham United’s U21 team.

Bayern Munich just spent €500,000 on 16-year-old midfielder Timothy Tillman.  He is a dual national of Germany and the United States.  He has featured for Germany’s U15 team, but he has told O When The Yanks that he would be interested in the US.

French-American forward Dylan Alexis Romney is now on loan with Savona from Inter Milan.

Former US international and youth coach Hugo Perez is now going to be an assistant coach for El Salvador.

Robbie Kristo spurned MLS for Italian Serie B side Spezia back in February and now he is headed out on loan to Fidelis Andria in Lega Pro (third tier).

Devann Yao finished last season with Neustrelitz and now he is still in Germany but with Kickers Offenbach.

Probably won’t know the USMNT roster for September’s friendlies until after this weekend, but here is Peru’s roster.

Copa America Centenario is taking place next summer.  We just don’t know whether CONCACAF will be involved or not.

DeAndre Yedlin is getting some loan interest from teams in England and Spain.

Tijuana’s website has a little story up on Paul Arriola.

San Diego State product Ata Ozbay has signed with Finn Harps in Ireland.

And finally, Kenya Brown caught up with Alex DeJohn about his season in Norway.

Tijuana vs. Zacatepec Highlights
July 28, 2015 (10:29 PM) by Matt Benson

Paul Arriola (90′), Alejandro Guido (90′) and Amando Moreno (60′) all started with Arriola scoring a goal (assisted by Moreno) in Tijuana’s 2-1 win over Zacatepec in Copa MX action tonight.  Here is Arriola’s goal.

Seis de Mayo links
May 6, 2015 (12:19 AM) by Matt Benson

Had one too many margaritas last night?  Nothing a few links can’t help.

As Howie posted yesterday, Birmingham City is letting Will Packwood go while offering Jonathan Spector a new contract.

I posted a couple tidbits on the USMNT, U-23 and U-17 teams earlier this week but I also forgot to include that the U-23 team will be holding a camp in England in September.  They will play friendlies against England and Qatar during the camp.

Jordan Morris made an appearance on the Men in Blazers podcast last and it was enjoyable.

The biggest smile you have ever seen on Michael Bradley?

Edgar Castillo made ESPN’s Liga MX Team of the Weekend.

The Guardian’s Jack Kerr interviewed Fabian Johnson.

According to Terrence Boyd’s Instagram, he is having minor surgery this week to remove a cyst from his calf and to clean out his knee.

It looks like Fulham (and Emerson Hyndman) will be wearing a 1975 FA Cup Final inspired shirt next year.  I believe this is the first collar on a Fulham shirt since 2007-08.

Amando Moreno really wants to make the U-20 World Cup roster as he scored two goals last Friday and followed that up with another goal yesterday with Tijuana’s U-20 team.

Marc Pelosi did not play with Liverpool’s U-21 team last week because he got to train with the senior team.

And it looks like Liverpool might have their eyes on another American youth player in Adolfo Trujillo.

Fox Sports is expected to land the TV rights to next year’s Copa América Centenario.

Danny Cruz might need to borrow Mike Conley’s mask at the current rate of getting cleats to the face this past week.

J.R. Eskilson spoke to Sam Strong about how an encounter with Jurgen Klinsmann in an airport helped him get his US U-23 call-up last month.

Steven Goff is hearing that Duke product Jeremy Ebobisse and Virginia’s Jake Rozhansky are headed to Europe for some trials.

I recently learned of another former US Soccer Development Academy player in Germany.  Faisal Almubaslat is a 17-year-old winger at Tennis Borussia Berlin playing with their U-17 team in the B-Junioren Bundesliga Nord/Nordost.  He had a few goals and assists in April as you can see in these highlights against RB Leipzig and Concordia Hamburg.

And finally, a little plug for our goal tracker.  There have been a lot of goals, especially in lower leagues, as of late and it will keep you up to date with who is scoring (and links to highlights when available).

Hump day link randomness
April 22, 2015 (12:46 AM) by Matt Benson

A bunch of links that are all over the place.

Roderick is over in Europe on vacation so no The OT Report for this past weekend.  As for some highlights, we had goals by Cole Grossman, Evin Nadaner, Cesar Romero, Björn Maars Johnsen, Jay Denny and a brace by Christian Pulisic.  We also had assists by Joe Corona and Aron JohannssonFreddy Adu made his debut in Finland.  Bobby Wood returned from injury and started for Erzgebirge Aue.

As for the mid week so far, Gedion Zelalem help setup a goal for Arsenal’s U-21 team.  Michael Orozco had an assist as Puebla won the Copa MX final over Chivas (Herculez Gomez watched from the bench).  And Andrija Novakovich scored a goal for Reading’s U-21 team.

The US U-20 team is in Austria this week and here is their roster.  They had a 2-2 draw against Qatar yesterday with the US goals coming from Amando Moreno and Conor Donovan.

The US U-23 team will take on Mexico later tonight at the StubHub Center.  Here is their roster.  Apparently manager Andi Herzog asked Hamburg permission for Julian Green to stay after last week’s friendly against Mexico for this game but they didn’t respond yes to him until Green was already on a plane back to Germany.  Herzog also wants to create a pipeline to the USMNT with the U-23 team.  And  Liviu Bird’s random observation from training earlier this week, Jordan Morris has Type 1 diabetes and tests his blood sugar during training.

For those of you that miss watching grainy Youtube videos of Josh Gatt flying down the wings, we have some good news.  He has been cleared to play again after a couple knee surgeries.

Hannover 96 did some shuffling around of their coaching staff and Steve Cherundolo has been promoted to an assistant.

Greg Seltzer took a look at Danny Williams’ performance in the FA Cup semifinals from the weekend.

The USMNT’s 2-0 victory over Mexico last week did well ratings-wise for Fox Sports 1.

Pele thinks the US should host the 2026 World Cup.

Cameron Carter-Vickers and Gedion Zelalem made The Telegraph’s Top 35 hottest prospects in who play in England list.

Mukwelle Akale and Villarreal won the División de Honor Juvenil de Fútbol Group 7 title.

And finally, Tim Ream is better than Jordan Spieth at golf.

Links and such for Friday
March 6, 2015 (12:46 AM) by Matt Benson

Some links from the last couple of days.

The US U-17 team won their third straight game of the CONCACAF U-17 Championship over Guatemala yesterday.  Here are some highlights while here are some photos.  With nine points through three games, the US can clinch the group and a spot at the FIFA U-17 World Cup with a win over Honduras on Sunday even though they have one more group stage game after that.

We didn’t have any injuries this week, but we had a few goals from some not-so-usual suspects during the midweek games.  As always, Roderick has you covered on what happened with The OT Report.

As for some highlights from the past week.  Adam Henley scored his first professional goal (highlights).  Amando Moreno scored another goal in Copa MX action (highlights).  And fresh off his USMNT call-up in January, Julio Morales scored in Copa MX action (highlights).

Conor O’Brien was also credited with an assist this week, but the site that I have been able to get Austrian highlights in the past changed their settings and won’t allow the video player to start for people outside Austria.  We also had some other goals this week that don’t have highlights yet, but you can always follow along with our goal tracker.

Speaking of Copa MX, the group stage finished up this past week and the quarterfinals have been figured out.  The Tijuana contingent earned the #1 seed and will take on Gabriel Farfan and Chiapas.  Everyone’s favorite left back Jonathan Bornstein and Queretaro are the #4 seed and will take on Chivas.  Herculez Gomez, Michael Orozco and Puebla are the #2 seed and take on Merida.  And Alonso Hernandez and Monterrey (#3 seed) will face UAT.

The first leg of the FA Youth Cup semifinals were this week with Cameron Carter-Vickers’ Tottenham squad winning the first game, 2-0, over Kyle Scott and Chelsea.  By a lot of accounts, CCV was one of the best players on the field.  Carter-Vickers was also on the cover of the match program this week.  And here is a post-game video interview with CCV.

Sticking with Cameron Carter-Vickers for a second, here is an article from The Telegraph on Tottenham’s youth with Carter-Vickers getting some love.

Continuing with the hyphenated centerbacks, it looks like there is a good chance that Erik Palmer-Brown is headed to Juventus.

In his second game since going out on loan, Lynden Gooch scored a goal and was named Man of the Match in Gateshead’s 3-1 win over Wrexham earlier this week.

Friend of the site Jon Arnold was in Mexico City this week for Club America’s CONCACAF Champions League win over Saprissa.  After seeing Ventura Alvarado in the flesh, he wrote some words on the centerback.

Herbert Robinson trained with Santos Laguna’s first team this week.

FC Anyang officially announced the loan deal for Philadelphia Union defender Austin Berry.

There was some chatter this week that Bob Bradley was in the running for Aston Villa’s director of football position, but his agent squashed that thought.

New York Red Bulls second round (Super!) draft pick Stefano Bonomo looks to be in Italy on trial with SPAL.

Björn Maars Johnsen had scored 14 goals in 27 games for Atlético CP in Portugal this season, but he appears to be with Lovech in Bulgaria now.  For those out of the loop, he was born in North Carolina but grew up in Norway.

Brian Sciaretta talked to Desevio Payne this week about making his Eredivisie debut.

Here is an interview with SC Freiburg’s Ethan Sonis.

And finally, to end on a light note, here is a great video of Jermaine Jones struggling to name 1990s MLS logos.

Links and other nonsense for Thursday
February 26, 2015 (2:18 AM) by Matt Benson

A bunch of stuff from the last couple of days.

The US U-17 begins its World Cup qualifying quest on Friday and here is the roster that Richie Williams has called in.  And here are the rosters for all the teams at the tournament.

Brian Sciaretta talked to Williams this week about the roster and qualification.

Will Parchman wrote a lot of words on US U-17 starlet Christian Pulisic.

Club Tijuana’s website has a story up on forward Brandon Vazquez, who I was told by Mr. Parchman was sort of a surprise inclusion to the US U-17 roster.

Herculez Gomez likes scoring goals for Puebla and scored two more in Copa MX action earlier this week (highlights).

Edgar Castillo went the full 90 minutes last night in Atlas’ big 1-0 win over Atletico Mineiro in Copa Libertadores.  How rare was the win?  It was Atletico Mineiro’s first loss at home in Copa Libertadores play since 1978, a run of 20 straight games.

Club America president Ricardo Pelaez would like to see Mexico call-up Ventura Alvarado, but El Tri manager Miguel Herrera recently told some press that other players are ahead of Alvarado in his pecking order.  You know what to do next, Klinsi.

The Toronto Sun’s Kurtis Larson had a nice lengthy interview with Jozy Altidore.

“There were a lot of options,” Altidore said. “People were saying I was forced to Toronto or something like that. I just thought at this point in my life it was something that I was ready to do.

“I was ready for the public opinion and backlash. The project they have here excited me the most.”

Even more than the plethora of opportunities he had on Europe’s mainland.

Altidore explained why he chose Toronto FC over four German clubs, two French sides, two Italian teams and a potential loan move within the Premier League.

But there are a lot of goodies in that interview so go read it.

While he is not playing much for Hamburg, Bayern Munich is at least making money off Julian Green.  According to one report out of Germany, Bayern Munich is getting paid each time Green doesn’t make Hamburg’s gameday roster.  And that has happened a lot this season.

As for some injury news, Aron Johannsson returned to training earlier this week after missing a couple games for AZ Alkmaar.

Tim Ream is also expected to return to training this week after being subbed off last weekend with a back injury.

Brian Sciaretta talked to Josh Gatt about coming back from his knee injuries over the last couple years.  And here is a short video of Gatt sprinting on his knee.

Despite some recent un-Tim Howard-like performances, Roberto Martinez still has Tim Howard’s back.

Jurgen Klinsmann is returning Robbie Rogers’ e-mails again.

After scoring some goals with both Tijuana’s senior team and U-20 team, Club Tijuana’s website has a little story up on Amando Moreno.

It looks like Philadelphia Union’s Austin Berry is being sent out on loan to South Korea’s FC Anyang.

Former DC United and Seattle Sounders forward David Estrada is on trial with Stabæk.

Speaking of the Fighting Bob Bradleys, here is a video interview with Stabæk midfielder Cole Grossman.

And finally, Sky Sports in England won the TV rights to MLS for the first time.

A bunch of links for Thursday
February 19, 2015 (12:19 AM) by Matt Benson

A bunch of stuff to get to today.

Camp Cupcake ended a couple weeks ago so John broke down the USMNT depth chart as we look towards this summer’s Gold Cup.

It has been a good week in Copa MX for various Americans, including goals by Amando Moreno, Stevie Rodriguez and Gabriel Farfan.

Remember this random graphic that aired during a US U-20 game last month that showed two unannounced USMNT friendlies for later this year?  US Soccer shot down the rumor of the Australia friendly.

The new USMNT away jersey became a real thing this week.  And this is what the pre-match and training tops look like.  Then while browsing World Soccer Shop, I stumbled across the socks and anthem jackets.

Winter is coming.  Multiple sources have told Grant Wahl that the 2022 World Cup moving to November and December is a done deal.

Fitness.  Fitness.  Fitness.  Matt Besler made some comments then Jurgen Klinsmann tweeted something out and now Besler has to make another comment.  I hate fitness-gate.  Moving on.

Julian Green scored a goal in a friendly yesterday as Hamburg U-23s beat some fifth division team 13-2.

I’m assuming it was because I was in attendance, but Joe Corona was named to ESPN’s Liga MX Team of the Week.

Robbie Kristo has signed with Serie B side Spezia Calcio.

Alfred Koroma has signed with SV Lafnitz in the Austrian Regionalliga (third division).

A.J. Soares played 45 minutes for Viking FK while on trial in a preseason friendly against Vålerenga yesterday.

In the FA Youth Cup quarterfinals this week, Kyle Scott (started and played 97 minutes) and Chelsea defeated Newcastle United 3-0.  And Cameron Carter-Vickers (started and played 90 minutes) and Tottenham defeated Nottingham Forest 2-1.

Ariel Lassiter has been called up by Costa Rica’s U-23 team for the IMG Suncoast Pro Classic in Bradenton, Florida.

Greg Seltzer caught up with Rhett Bernstein as Mjøndalen begin play in the Tippeligaen in a couple of months after earning promotion last year.

Ryan Adeleye is now with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, but he spoke to NASL.com about his time in Israel.

George Mason product Chase Miller has signed with Swedish club Bodens BK.  Here is a video of Miller talking while he was on trial a couple weeks ago.

And finally, it looks like the 2015 CONCACAF U-17 Championship will be on Fox Sports 2, while the US U-20’s games at the U-20 World Cup will be on Fox Sports 1.

Tijuana vs. Deportivo Tepic Highlights
February 17, 2015 (9:54 PM) by Matt Benson

John Requejo Jr., Alejandro Guido and Amando Moreno all started while Paul Arriola came off the bench in Tijuana’s 2-2 draw to Deportivo Tepic in Copa MX action.  Amando Moreno scored the first goal of the game while Alejandro Guido was sent off in the 13th minute with a red card.  I am still looking for better quality highlights, but here is Moreno’s goal for now.

A few things for Thursday
January 8, 2015 (1:26 AM) by Matt Benson

New York appears to be the place to be at the moment.

A day after we had Mix Diskerud-to-NYCFC rumors, Taylor Twellman tells us that Jozy Altidore is talking to a few MLS teams, including New York Red Bulls.  Less than an hour later, Ives Galarcep told the world that the Red Bulls are also closing in on Sacha Kljestan.

Those of you waiting to buy a DeAndre Yedlin/Tottenham jersey can now go ahead with that purchase as he is wearing #12.  Here is also a quick video of him scoring in his first training with Spurs.

Speaking of new jerseys, the American contingent at Club Tijuana will be wearing Adidas this season after wearing Nike the last few seasons.  The previous link has the red jerseys while here is the white jerseys.  And here is Joe Corona in the red jersey.

Tijuana’s website also has an interview up with Tab Ramos since the US U-20 team features Paul Arriola, John Requejo, Amando Moreno and Fernando Arce Jr.

Here is a photo of the US U-20 team training in Jamaica from yesterday.

We know the US group stage games will be broadcasted on FS2, but here is a whole PDF with all the broadcast information of the entire tournament from Fox.

The USMNT friendly against Chile on January 28 will be played at Estadio El Teniente in Rancagua.  The game will start at 5 PM Eastern and will be broadcasted on FS1.

Danny Karbassiyoon talked to ONE World Sports about scouting Gedion Zelalem.  I found this part sort of funny.

“I was all over CONCACAF looking for guys,’’ Karbassiyoon said Monday. “And every single trip I went on was a plane ride, and if it was a drive, it was several hours away in another market. But with Gedion, maybe two or three months after I originally met him, his dad had me over. I knew I was close but that area is confusing, and I’m navigationally challenged, so I looked up the house and it said estimated time three minutes. I said that really is close. It was pretty hilarious.”

Cesar Romero (a.k.a. The Joker) got some love from UEFA.com this week.

Goalkeeper Matt Pyzdrowski has moved from Ängelholms FF to Helsingborgs IF in the Allsvenskan (first division).  Some might remember that Alejandro Bedoya played two seasons with Helsingborgs IF.

Speaking of goalkeepers, resident goalkeeper fanatic Will Reno has your monthly recap in American goalkeepers right here.
