March madness links
March 20, 2015 (6:26 AM) by Matt Benson

Work is busy with this little hoopyball tournament going on so these will be quick and to the point.

Roderick has your rundown of the midweek games.

Tim Howard and Everton were knocked out of Europa League and here are some highlights.

Some sites credited Eric Lichaj with an assist earlier this week, but as you can see from these highlights, he just headed the ball out to the guy who ended running the full field and scoring.  So a little tough to call it an assist.

William Yarbrough confirmed his USMNT call-up in a Leon press conference yesterday.

Brian Sciaretta also has some news on call-ups for Gedion Zelalem (no longer listed on Germany’s site for their U-18 team), Desevio Payne and Adam Henley.

And it looks like NYCFC forward Khiry Shelton might be called into the US U-23 camp.

Brian Sciaretta also talked to Jerome Kiesewetter about his US U-23 call-up.

Brian Quarstad has a piece up on Mukwelle Akale over at the Northern Pitch.

Goalkeeper Zac Lubin has left Sweden and IFK Lulea for the Tulsa Roughnecks.

Former New England Revolution defender Jossimar Sanchez has signed with Nyköpings BIS in Sweden.

And finally, someone at Nike who creates the jerseys for the national teams apparently learned how to use gradient on photoshop.  And Norway (new to Nike) is getting the US’ third jersey leftovers from 2011.

Hump day links
February 11, 2015 (1:32 AM) by Matt Benson

A bunch of random stuff so let’s get into it.

Tim Howard has been out injured since December with a calf injury but he is expected to start for Everton today in their game against Chelsea.

Jermaine Jones’ hernia surgery was a success and he is expected to be out 4-6 weeks.

Julian Green has been demoted to Hamburg’s U-23 team in the Regionalliga.  Green has appeared in only five games since being sent out on loan in August.

A.J. Soares is in Norway training with the Stabæk, but this is not a trial.  Sounds like Bob Bradley is just helping him out before he heads out on other trials in Europe.

US U-17 international Christian Pulisic is now a member of Borussia Dortmund and he got to train with the first team yesterday.  And here is a photo of Pulisic talking to Jurgen Klopp.

The US U-20 team found out its group for the U-20 World Cup earlier this week (SPOILER ALERT – It is a favorable one).  Brian Sciaretta talked to Russell Canouse and Dembakwi Yomba to get their reaction.  Tab Ramos also talked to Soccer by Ives to give his thoughts.  Sounds like the U-20 team might have a friendly against England in March and friendlies against Greece and Qatar in April.

Danny Williams scored a goal this past weekend and now he wants to score a goal at home for Reading’s fans.

Will Packwood looks to be playing again with Birmingham City’s U-21 team for the first time since injuring his groin.

Joe Gyau talked to Vice Sports about his crazy last year of signing with Dortmund and battling injuries.

Cody Cropper is slowly working his way back into training after suffering a head injury during a collision during a game last month.  This is what his eye looked like three weeks ago.

Michael Farfan is returning to MLS and has signed with D.C. United.  Farfan left the Philadelphia Union for Cruz Azul after the 2013 season but only appeared in one league game for La Maquina in 2014 (although he did score).

Andrija Novakovich scored a late game-tying goal in Reading U-18’s 1-1 draw to Southampton last week.  You can check out the goal at the 2:42 mark of this video.

Matt Horth is returning to the US and has signed with NASL’s Atlanta Silverbacks.  Horth played the 2014 season in Iceland with Leiknir Reykjavík, scoring six goals in 17 games.

Brian Span looks to be in Finland on trial with IFK Mariehamn after being waived by FC Dallas last week.  Span has European experience with Swedish side Djurgården in 2012 and 2013.  He returned to the US with FC Dallas in 2014, but spent most of his time in USL Pro with Orlando City on loan or with FC Dallas’ reserve team.

Sebastian Troupe has signed a new contract with Bærum in Norway.

Will John was last seen with MAS Fez in Morocco and now he is Croatia trying to find a new home after a near deal with Shamrock Rovers in Ireland hit a snag.

I posted last week with a link about how Kevin Garcia was making the move to Ireland with Galway FC.  Someone in Ireland e-mailed me that it is not true (“was news to the press officer”).  Also, Jake Keegan isn’t with the club either at the moment as he is still waiting for a work permit.  And former Yale and Portland Timbers U-23 defender Andy Hackbarth is on trial with the club.

Goalkeeper Zac Lubin was Kevin Garcia’s teammate at IFK Luleå last season and now he is on trial with Cork City in Ireland.

And completing the IFK Luleå news roundup, goalkeeper Alex Wimmer is on trial with IFK Luleå.  If you are looking for a Swedish third division to cheer for, IFK Luleå has to be winner, right?

Catching up on life and links
February 19, 2014 (12:01 AM) by Matt Benson

A few links from the last few days.

Despite all the craziness going on in Ukraine, the US-Ukraine friendly is still on schedule for March 5 according to US Soccer, but they are monitoring the situation.

In the random USMNT stat department, Leander Schaerlaeckens crunched some numbers to see how much playing time MLS players have been getting for the US in each of the last four World Cups.  That number has dropped from 62.8% in France (1998) to 18.5% in South Africa (2010).  But that number should shoot up this summer with the return of about everyone over the past couple of months.

Jurgen Klinsmann did an interview with FIFA.com last week.

Inside World Foorball has an article about USMNT assistant coach Andi Herzog and his job of scouting/recruiting in Europe.

Here is the first ever The Brad Evans Show with guests (and fellow USMNT teammates) Matt Besler and Mike Magee.  It is not great, but it is not awful.  A lot of awkwardness.  But I am mainly linking it because it is really funny with how much Magee gets legitimately annoyed at Evans for comparing his hair to Landon Donovan.

After missing some time with a stomach virus, Brek Shea came off the bench and played 45 minutes for Barnsley in their 2-0 loss to Wigan Athletic on Tuesday.

Oguchi Onyewu is out of the training room and is running again.  He is not expected to return this weekend for Sheffield Wednesday, but he is getting closer to a full return after picking up a calf injury.

Jonathan Spector played with Birmingham City’s U-21 team on Monday.  Spector has been sidelined since October with a thigh injury.

After we were told that Eric Lichaj was about 7-10 days away from returning with Nottingham Forest, their website now has a story up saying that he is about 10-14 days away from returning after suffering a groin injury.

Kim Tate has a good interview up with Herculez Gomez and Paul Arriola.  We learn that Gomez used to coach a seven-year-old Arriola in San Diego once upon a time.

So the LA Galaxy sent Jose Villarreal on loan to Cruz Azul to likely get some playing time and now Cruz Azul is sending Villarreal to their second-division affiliate Cruz Azul Hidalgo.  Villarreal had appeared in two games with Cruz Azul’s U-20 team so far this season, scoring one goal.

Bob Bradley is working his MLS connections again as goalkeeper Matt Pickens is currently in Norway training with Stabæk.

US U-20 forward Lynden Gooch scored his 10th goal of the season for Sunderland’s U-18 team on Tuesday.

Goalkeeper Zac Lubin has signed with Swedish Division I (third tier) side IFK Luleå.  The Montana native last played with the Seattle Sounders’ U-23 team.
