Klinsmann makes four changes to Gold Cup roster
July 17, 2013 (8:03 PM) by Matt Benson

US Soccer just tweeted this out to the masses regarding roster changes to the Gold Cup roster.

I like bringing in Matt Besler and Omar Gonzalez as I still think they need to get as many international reps as possible.  Grant Wahl is hearing that Oguchi Onyewu picked up an injury against Cuba, while Tijuana wanted Herculez Gomez back.

Fourth of July links
July 4, 2013 (12:15 AM) by Matt Benson

Today is always one of the great days of the year.  Here are a few links to read between some beers and fireworks.

Jurgen Klinsmann has selected DaMarcus Beasley as the captain for the US for the Gold Cup.  A nice honor for Beasley.

US Soccer has not made any official announcements, but Ives is hearing that Josh Gatt’s knee injury is significant enough that he will miss the Gold Cup.  As for the other injured player, Corey Ashe, he returned to full training today.

The USMNT will hold a training session open to the public today at 5 PM Pacific at Qualcomm Stadium.  Admission is free.

The official US Soccer youtube page has uploaded some highlights from past games against Guatemala.  So here is a game from 2000 and one from 2005.

I don’t know if I will do a pre-game primer or not, but here are the game notes.  The US is 13-4-6 all-time against Guatemala (11-0-1 on American soil) and the game will be on at 8 PM Pacific on NBC Sports Network.

The latest run of wins by the US has moved them up to #22 in the latest FIFA world rankings, up six spots from last month and now only two spots behind Mexico who dropped from #17 to #20.

Leander Schaerlaeckens writes about US Soccer’s slowly building scouting network.

If you haven’t read this site in a while, Howie has been bringing the thunder this week with a bunch of posts.  He has posted about Jared Jeffrey joining DC United.  Mario Rodriguez’s move to Borussia Mönchengladbach U-23 team.  Derby County want to send Conor Doyle to MLS on a loan.  Mike Grella is not returning to Scunthorpe United.  And I threw up a post about our latest Jann George sighting.  So this site has been pretty busy this week during a normally slow period.

In some fun site news, I got confirmation that our first international order for a Sacha Kljestan mustache shirt successfully crossed the pond and landed in Beglium.  The buyer is hopefully going to get a photo with Sacha and the shirt at one of Anderlecht’s preseason sessions in the next few weeks.  You can buy your own shirt right here.

While things in Egypt seem to be acting up again, it is good to hear that Bob Bradley and his wife are currently safe and back in the US for the moment.

Greg Seltzer has the latest transfer gossip about Jozy Altidore right here and here.  Thoughts on Jozy at Sunderland?

The Wooten Clan, Andrew Wooten, continues to put the ball in the back of the net in preseason friendlies for Kaiserslautern, scoring another two goals in a 7-0 win over Slovenian champs Maribor.

Chukwudi Chijindu scored his fifth goal of the season in Thór’s 2-1 win over ÍA Akranes on Wednesday.  His five goals this season are tied for the second most in the Icelandic Úrvalsdeild.

And here is what Bobby Wood will be wearing next season at 1860 Munich.  1860 Munich always seem to have some shirts that I like.

Enjoy the day.

Random Tuesday linkage
July 2, 2013 (12:01 AM) by Matt Benson

The USMNT Gold Cup squad started up training yesterday in San Diego.  Josh Gatt left his game at Molde FK this weekend with a knee injury, but still no news to report on how bad (or good?) it is as they wait for the MRI results.  Cory Ashe is also day-to-day with a thigh contusion.

Here is a Google-translated article about Jurgen Klinsmann wanting Bobby Wood for the Gold Cup, but 1860 Munich persuaded that it was in his best interest to stay in Europe for preseason training.

As for another Wood(s), USMNT goalkeeper coach Chris Woods was officially named the goalkeeper coach at Manchester United.  Woods was the goalkeeper coach under David Moyes at Everton, and as for the good news, will get to continue coaching with the USMNT (although he won’t be with the team at the Gold Cup).

Jozy Altidore sat down with Grant Wahl recently for this video interview.  Greg Seltzer has some Jozy transfer goodies here and here.  He also has some more stuff on Alejandro Bedoya and Joe Gyau.  And he lets us know that US youth forward Rubio Rubin will sign a deal with FC Utrecht next spring once he turns 18.

Will Packwood is jogging for the first time since his nasty leg injury (and surgeries).  Good to hear.

Timothy Chandler has returned from his knee injury and started a preseason friendly for Nurnberg over the weekend.

As for some more preseason friendly stuff from the weekend, Alfredo Morales started for FC Ingolstadt in a friendly against Maccabi Tel Aviv.  And Julian Green had a hat trick on Saturday in Pep Guardiola’s first game with Bayern Munich, a 15-1 win over some fan club.  Then followed that up with a hat trick on Sunday in another friendly with Bayern Munich’s senior team against another amateur team.  In my opinion, there is a good chance the 18-year-old could be playing with Bayern’s U-23 team this upcoming season.  He scored 10 goals in 28 league games with their U-19 team last season.

Fabian Hurzeler is training with Hoffenheim’s senior team to start out the preseason.

It looks like Borussia Mönchengladbach could be interested in signing US U-20er Mario Rodriguez to their youth team.

Here is a video interview with Aubrey Perry and Charles Renken about their trial at Nyköpings BIS in Sweden.

And finally, OT reader/frequent commenter Daniil let us know that 15-year-old Elbert Green of the Pacific Soccer Academy is down in Honduras training with Olimpia.  Green was born in San Jose, California.
