Catching up with some links
November 5, 2015 (12:03 AM) by Matt Benson

Haven’t done one of these in a while.

Aron Johannsson will be out for a while after having hip surgeryAccording to ArJo, the surgery was a success.

Bob Bradley has led Stabæk to a place in next year’s Europa League.  He spoke to Greg Seltzer about the season.  He is one of two American coaches to lead a team to next year’s Europa League.  One Norwegian publication also named him Tippeligaen Manager of the Year.

Sticking with American managers in Europe, it looks like David Wagner is going to be Huddersfield Town’s next manager.

Cameron Carter-Vickers has signed a new deal with Tottenham through 2018.

Brian Sciaretta talked to Danny Williams this week.

US U-20 right back Desevio Payne is starting to get playing time again with FC Groningen.

Eddie Johnson officially announced his retirement from soccer.  He made 63 appearances for the USMNT.

Will Reno made a video on goalkeeper Ethan Horvath.  Will also did an interview this week and shockingly it is not with a goalkeeper (it is with Mexican-American Josue Soto).

Fabian Johnson scored a goal in Champions League action earlier this week.

Jermaine Jones’ contract expires at the end of the season and he is getting some interest from abroad.

Luis Gil is another player who has an expiring contract and is getting some interest from outside the US.

Junior Flores said no to El Salvador and still want to play for the US.

Jurgen Klinsmann did a Q&A session with US Soccer’s website.

Lynden Gooch scored two goals with Sunderland’s U21 team earlier this week.  His U21 coach had some nice things to say about Gooch.  And Sunderland’s website has a little spotlight on Gooch.

The American contingent at Tijuana will now have Miguel Herrera as their manager come 2016.

Paul Arriola and Alejandro Guido both scored with Tijuana’s U20 team this past weekend.

The US U-23 team will play two friendlies in Brazil this month.

And finally, Pablo Punyed is staying in Iceland but will play for IBV next season.

A bunch of youthful links for Thursday
August 27, 2015 (12:03 AM) by Matt Benson

It has been a good week for US youth players.

Lynden Gooch scored in his third straight U21 game over the weekend (highlights), which led to him making his Sunderland senior team debut in their Capital One Cup win over Exeter City (photo).  And he spoke to Sunderland’s website following his debut.

Gedion Zelalem officially went on loan to Rangers this week.  Rangers’ website has a photo gallery of his first training session and an interview with him.  Then he went out to make his debut in yesterday’s Scottish Cup match against Airdrieonians and end up with two assists (and a hockey assist on a third goal) in the 5-0 win (highlights).

Andrija Novakovich scored a goal over the weekend in Reading U21s’ 2-1 win over Liverpool (highlights).

Andrija Novakovich’s former teammate at Reading, Aleks Gogic, spoke to Will about his time at Reading and his current stint with the Nike Academy.

Julian Green scored a goal in Bayern Munich II’s 2-1 win against Bayreuth on Tuesday.  Still no highlights available just yet, but here is a photo of Green in action.

Amando Moreno scored another goal with Tijuana’s U20 team over the weekend.  That gives him three goals on the season at the U20 level.

Cody Cropper got the start and made a couple saves in MK Dons’ 2-1 win over Cardiff City in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday (highlights).

A slight break from the youth train.  Geoff Cameron scored the clinching penalty kick (and it was nicely taken) in Stoke City’s 1-1 (8-7 on PKs) victory over Luton Town in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday (highlights).  And Matt Taylor has been on fire for Saarbrücken, scoring over the weekend against Pirmasens (highlights) and this week against Spielberg (highlights).

But you don’t care about these vets, you want more information on youth players.

The last time we heard about the US U-17 team, they lost their first game of the Vaclav Jezek Tournament.  They followed that up with draws against Slovenia and Slovakia.  Then finished the tournament with a win over Ukraine.

While he plays with Fulham’s U21 team, Emerson Hyndman has been called in to the US U-23s’ September camp.

US U-17 forward (and dual national) Kai Koreniuk has accepted a call-up with Netherlands’ U-18 team.

Josh Deaver has three different tweets about Ben Lederman’s current situation with Barcelona.

O When The Yanks gives us an update on Djair Parfitt-Williams’ citizenship.  He has become a regular with West Ham United’s U21 team.

Bayern Munich just spent €500,000 on 16-year-old midfielder Timothy Tillman.  He is a dual national of Germany and the United States.  He has featured for Germany’s U15 team, but he has told O When The Yanks that he would be interested in the US.

French-American forward Dylan Alexis Romney is now on loan with Savona from Inter Milan.

Former US international and youth coach Hugo Perez is now going to be an assistant coach for El Salvador.

Robbie Kristo spurned MLS for Italian Serie B side Spezia back in February and now he is headed out on loan to Fidelis Andria in Lega Pro (third tier).

Devann Yao finished last season with Neustrelitz and now he is still in Germany but with Kickers Offenbach.

Probably won’t know the USMNT roster for September’s friendlies until after this weekend, but here is Peru’s roster.

Copa America Centenario is taking place next summer.  We just don’t know whether CONCACAF will be involved or not.

DeAndre Yedlin is getting some loan interest from teams in England and Spain.

Tijuana’s website has a little story up on Paul Arriola.

San Diego State product Ata Ozbay has signed with Finn Harps in Ireland.

And finally, Kenya Brown caught up with Alex DeJohn about his season in Norway.

Links from the last couple weeks
July 21, 2015 (12:02 AM) by Matt Benson

I haven’t done a links post in a while but the last few weeks have been crazy on my end so some of this might be outdated a bit.  But some of this might still be new to you.  Anyways, here is what I have bookmarked over the last couple weeks.

I did a numbers/stats thing on the USMNT and Clint Dempsey this past weekend since it is easy to do one of those things when you win 6-0.

ESPN’s Doug McIntyre sat down with Clint Dempsey to talk about a couple things, including losing the captain’s armband.  It doesn’t seem like he minds that much.

Jozy Altidore told ESPN that he understands the Gold Cup roster swap that sent him home, but he thinks he could have still helped.

While we know Brek Shea did not get called into the Gold Cup due to injury, he ended up having hernia surgery last week.

Brad Guzan lost his starting job at Aston Villa for the last few games of the 2014-15 season, but his chances to re-claim it look a lot better as Shay Given has moved on to Stoke City.  And Villa manager Tim Sherwood recently told the press that Guzan will start this season as the team’s No. 1 goalkeeper.

I enjoyed the latest Total Soccer Show podcast, which featured Matthew Doyle as he continues his #FreeBenny campaign.

Julian Green wants to stay at Bayern Munich this season rather than going out on loan, but he does have some loan options.  Green is with the team over in Asia and you can see him scoring a goal in some 2v2 thing in Beijing in this video.

Slowly coming back from his ACL surgery, Terrence Boyd is working with a ball again for the first time since December.

Huddersfield Town manager Chris Powell thinks Duane Holmes will likely be loaned out again this upcoming season.

Free agent Conor O’Brien is getting some looks from teams in Denmark, Belgium and Austria according to his agent.

Jon-Paul Pittman scored a goal for Grimsby Town in a friendly last week.

Paul Arriola also scored a goal in a friendly in the last week.  He also recently talked to Tijuana’s website.

A report out of France says Quentin Westberg might be on the move to Tours FC in Ligue 2.  Westberg has started only four of Sarpsborg’s 16 league games in Norway this year, but he has been the starting keeper in three of the last four league games.

As for another goalkeeper, Leeds United’s site has a little story up on Charlie Horton.

Who wants some new kits for the upcoming season?  Here is what Tim Howard will be wearing this season, while Everton’s away kits are white.  Alejandro Bedoya and Nantes have pretty similar kits to what they wore last year.  Eric Lichaj and Nottingham Forest are going yellow for their 150th anniversary away kits.  And Jonathan Spector and Birmingham City have this nasty Belgium-looking away kit.

A few more player movement links for guys in lower leagues.

Royal-Dominique Fennell is staying within the German 3. Liga but switching up his Kickers, going from Stuttgarter Kickers to Würzburger Kickers.

After scoring 38 goals over the last two seasons with Greuther Fürth II in the German Regionalliga, Jann George has moved on to fellow Regionalliga side Jahn Regensburg.

After leaving Freiburg for Unterhaching last season, Eric Lickert has returned to Freiburg for this season.  He will likely play with Freiburg II in the Regionalliga.

Might have to bug Terrence Boyd for the lowdown, but dual national Ken Gipson is now with RB Leipzig.  Gipson is a 19-year-old German-American right back who had been with Stuttgart’s youth system.

Chukwudi Chijindu has made a move within Iceland, going from Thór to Keflavík ÍF.

And finally, Springfield College defender Ryan Malone has signed with Magdeburg in Germany.

Tab Ramos announces U-20 World Cup roster
May 7, 2015 (7:31 AM) by Howie Michaels

Let’s all overreact!

GOALKEEPERS (3): Jeff Caldwell (University of Virginia), Ethan Horvath (Molde FK), Zack Steffen (Freiburg)
DEFENDERS (6): Cameron Carter-Vickers (Tottenham Hotspur), Matthew Miazga (New York Red Bulls), Shaquell Moore (Unattached), Erik Palmer-Brown (Sporting Kansas City), Desevio Payne (FC Groningen), John Requejo (Club Tijuana)
MIDFIELDERS (6): Kellyn Acosta (FC Dallas), Paul Arriola (Club Tijuana), Russell Canouse (Hoffenheim), Marco Delgado (Toronto FC), Emerson Hyndman (Fulham), Joel Soñora (Boca Juniors)
FORWARDS (5): Jordan Allen (Real Salt Lake), Bradford Jamieson IV (LA Galaxy), Rubio Rubin (Utrecht), Maki Tall (Red Star), Tommy Thompson (San Jose Earthquakes)

Ramos can add one more name by May 15. You’d assume Junior Flores, Geldion Zelaem, and Romain Gall might be considered for that. The U.S. kicks off the tournament May 30 against Myanmar, or Burma as some of our old school readers might think of them.

One notable absence explained:

Everyone’s favorite Friday morning link drop
April 3, 2015 (12:01 AM) by Matt Benson

If not your favorite, we are in your Top 27.

As for some in-house linkage, our Will looked at another Will(iam)’s last two games at goalkeeper.

With the Norwegian Tippeligaen starting up next week, RJ caught up with Alex DeJohn to talk about his career and his move to IK Start.

While it might have been an international break, some lower level leagues kept chugging along and Roderick has you covered with what you missed over the week.

We did have one goal this week and it came from Duane Holmes (highlights).

US Soccer finally put up the US U-20 highlights from their 2-1 loss to England’s U-21 team from the weekend.

The goal scorer in that game was Maki Tall and he talked to Brian Sciaretta this week.

One thing that has been overlooked by many, myself included, until the guys over at Total Soccer Show (I’m guessing Daryl?) pointed out that Jozy Altidore will have to miss the Mexico friendly due to his red card against Switzerland.  I’m guessing most forgot about this since we haven’t had a red card in a friendly since January of 2012.  While I thought it was stupid on Jozy’s part and also pretty harsh by the ref, Alejandro Bedoya told Doug McIntyre after the game that the ref had warned Jozy at halftime about the language.

Who wants some Freddy Adu hot links?  He was introduced to the press yesterday and you can watch it here.  One of the interesting tidbits to come from it (and not that shocking with some of the lower leagues), he hasn’t been paid his salary by FK Jagodina in Serbia.  And I am doing my best from buying his jersey, but think about all the soccer hipster points you would get for it.

Roderick covered these in The OT Report, but a couple injury updates.  Zak Whitbread is one of a few injured Derby County players the team is hoping to get back on the field following the international break.  He has been out for a while with back and hamstring issues.

And Bobby Wood may be available to return this weekend in Erzgebirge Aue’s game against 1860 Munich.

Club Tijuana’s website has a story up with Paul Arriola and John Requejo Jr. following their trip to England with the US U-20 team.

Bobby Warshaw wrote some words on trying to figure out the mindset of Jurgen Klinsmann.

And let’s end this with some lower league transfer news.

Goalkeeper Keith Cardona is returning to the US after signing with NASL’s Indy Eleven.  Cardona spent 2014 in Austria with FC Leifering.

And while one player is returning, Creighton product David Abidor is headed to Sweden after signing with Division 1 (third tier) side Dalkurd FF.

Tijuana vs. Deportivo Tepic Highlights
February 17, 2015 (9:54 PM) by Matt Benson

John Requejo Jr., Alejandro Guido and Amando Moreno all started while Paul Arriola came off the bench in Tijuana’s 2-2 draw to Deportivo Tepic in Copa MX action.  Amando Moreno scored the first goal of the game while Alejandro Guido was sent off in the 13th minute with a red card.  I am still looking for better quality highlights, but here is Moreno’s goal for now.

My Xolos Adventure
February 17, 2015 (12:02 AM) by Matt Benson

Like many American soccer fans over the last couple seasons, Club Tijuana has slowly become my favorite Liga MX side, especially living in Southern California and having games on TV at reasonable times (Friday at 7:30 PM) instead of setting an alarm for 4 AM in order to watch an English Premier League match.

It also doesn’t hurt when the team boasts Americans Joe Corona, Greg Garza, Paul Arriola, a treasure trove of US U-20 players and have featured other Americans in the past (Edgar Castillo and Herculez Gomez).

With the weekend free, I decided to finally make the three hour trek south to Tijuana to check out the Xolos experience in person in their Friday game against Pumas.
