Links and whatnot for Tuesday
October 27, 2015 (12:02 AM) by Matt Benson

In case you have been out of the loop the last couple of days, CONCACAF, CONMEBOL and US Soccer all officially announced that the United States will be the host of next summer’s Copa America Centenario.

The US U-17 team was knocked out of the U-17 World Cup.

Julian Green had a hat trick over the weekend.  Ryan Malone scored his first goal in his first start since heading to Germany.  And Kenny Saief had an assist over the weekend.

US Soccer has parted ways with head trainer Sue Falsone.

We might not see another American at AZ Alkmaar as Director of Football Earnie Stewart has left the club to join the Philadelphia Union as their sporting director.

I think Bob Bradley has been “linked” to Aston Villa couple different times but he denied the latest rumors with them firing manager Tim Sherwood recently.

Dom Dwyer will get his US passport in 2017 and he might be interested in playing for the US.

ESPN’s Doug McIntyre has his latest USMNT hot list.

#FreeBenny.

Gedion Zelalem’s loan with Rangers ends in January but the club wants to extend it until the end of the season.

Tim Howard is getting some crap in England about the goals he gave up to Arsenal this past weekend.

Geoff Cameron picked up a thigh injury over the weekend and looks to be out for a week.

Andrija Novakovich scored a goal with Reading’s U-21 team yesterday.

Jordan Morris continues to do Jordan Morris things at Stanford (goal and assist).

And finally, Zarek Valentin wrote some words on five things he has learned as a professional.

A bunch of links for Tuesday morning
August 11, 2015 (12:04 AM) by Matt Benson

A bunch of random stuff for Tuesday.

The US U-23ers held their College ID camp (the college version of Camp Cupcake?) this past week and ended it with a 3-1 win over Tijuana’s Segunda Premier team.  The US goals came from Paul Salcedo (California) Mac Steeves (Providence) and Brandon Vincent (Stanford).  US Soccer has some highlights of the match, while here is a write-up from Tijuana’s website.

A couple people have recently asked me to do a “23 Names” type article on the U-23 team, but ASN’s Josh Deaver just did something similar so go read that.

One U-20 player who could be part of the U-23 team, Lynden Gooch, scored a goal and notched an assist in Sunderland U21s’ 3-1 win over Norwich City over the weekend.  You can check out both right here.

Another youth player, US U-17 midfielder Luca de la Torre, recorded an assist with Fulham’s U21 team over the weekend as well.

The German Cup had some interesting things happen this weekend to teams featuring Americans.  First we had someone shoot a gun at Hertha Berlin’s bus.  Luckily for John Brooks and his teammates, no one was on board when the shooting took place.  And while he is still out, Terrence Boyd’s RB Leipzig match against Osnabruck was abandoned in the 72nd minute after someone injured the ref by throwing a lighter at him.  Come on, Germany, you are better than that.

Geoff Cameron started at center back this past weekend in Stoke City’s loss to Liverpool.  Here is a photo of him in action.  He also spoke to Goal.com about why he missed the Gold Cup.

While his manager might not like it, Timothy Chandler told the press that he plans on accepting future USMNT call-ups.

Jann George scored a goal for Jahn Regensburg this past weekend.  I can’t find highlights of it yet, but here is a photo of him celebrating the goal.

Zarek Valentin had a nice assist this weekend (as well as a nice fist pump).  Greg Seltzer also spoke to him about playing in Norway.

We had a bunch of other goals this past weekend and you can check out all the highlights by looking at our updated goal tracker.

As for some goals we don’t have highlights for just yet, Danish-American defender Jamil Fearrington is now at Brønshøj BK and he scored over the weekend.

Will Daniels scored another two goals this weekend for Ægir in their 4-3 win over Sindri.  His eight league goals are the third most in the Icelandic 2. Deild (third tier).

Kai Koreniuk is a 17-year-old forward who signed with Dutch side Vitesse last August.  He scored a goal this weekend with one of their youth teams (3:55 mark).

Ethan Horvath, Josh Gatt and Molde FK will next face Standard Liège in the playoff round of Europa League.

SC Freiburg midfielder Ethan Sonis is headed out on loan to NASL’s Jacksonville Armada FC.

Defender Shane O’Neill is leaving the Colorado Rapids for Apollon Limassol of Cyprus.  Maybe Juan Agudelo can give him some real estate tips.

The Vancouver Whitecaps have sent Erik Hurtado on loan to Norwegian side Mjøndalen IF.  He will join fellow American Rhett Bernstein at the club.

After scoring 19 league goals for Landskrona over the last two years, Andrew Stadler has moved on to Östersunds FK.

After being cut by Galway United last week, Kevin Garcia has signed with Vasteras SK in Sweden.

Tristan Bowen is back in Europe and is now with Freddy Adu’s former Finnish team KuPS.  Bowen first experienced Europe in 2011-12 while on loan with Belgium side K.S.V. Roeselare.

Tijuana’s website has another story up on their Americans at the club.

Staying with the Mexican-American theme, the Total Soccer Show had Tom Marshall on this week to talk about El Tri, Liga MX and Mexican-American dual nationals.  No one covering Liga MX has a better British accent than Tom.

And finally, Will likes to rank goalies and has his updated Top 100 list for you as well as some bonus lists.

Post green beer hangover links
March 18, 2015 (1:12 AM) by Matt Benson

Work has been pretty busy for me over the last week so I haven’t done a links post in a while.  That said, a bunch of goodies for you while you wait that green beer hangover out.

Two US female goalkeepers squared off against each other in UEFA Women’s Champions League last October so Will decided to have a chat with both of them to find out more.

Missed out on the weekend’s games?  Roderick has you covered.

US Soccer is about to have a busy next couple of weeks with the USMNT, U-23 and U-20 teams all having camps and friendlies throughout Europe.  It looks like we should expect to see the various rosters over the weekend.

While we wait for the rosters, a bunch of names are kind of leaking out.  Thanks to Birmingham City’s site, we know that Will Packwood is going to be with the U-23 team.   Brian Sciaretta is also hearing that Jerome Kiesewetter will be with the U-23s, while Andrija Novakovich will be with the U-20s.  And while there has been speculation that Jurgen Klinsmann is going to call in Ventura Alvarado with the MNTers, there is at least one report of Leon goalkeeper William Yarbrough being called in as well.

We are still waiting for Gedion Zelalem’s waiver to go through with FIFA, but he has been called in by Germany’s U-18 team.  He has turned them down in the past and hopefully he does again.

Speaking of rosters, here is Denmark’s roster for the USMNT friendly.

If you hate yourself, here is another (and new) story on Jurgen Klinsmann and fitness.

Will Packwood scored his first professional goal yesterday in Cheltenham Town’s 2-2 draw to Portsmouth (highlights).  He had to be subbed out due to some kind of injury, but he tweeted after the game that he is “feeling groggy” but is OK.

DeAndre Yedlin is back on the field and played with Tottenham’s U-21 team on Monday.  Here is a photo of him in action.

Andrija Novakovich made his debut with Reading’s senior team over the weekend in Reading’s 4-1 loss at Watford.  Here is a photo of Novakovich about to come onto the field.

Reading and Danny Williams (went the full 90) won their FA Cup 6th round replay over Bradford City on Monday.  Reading is headed to the FA Cup semis for the first time since 1927.

Klinsi was impressed with Jozy Altidore’s Toronto FC debut.

I see you, Greg Garza.

A.J. Soares is going to be out 6-8 weeks after picking up a knee injury in training.

According to this report out of Philadelphia, Union midfielder Danny Cruz is headed to Norway to go on a season-long loan with Bodø/Glimt.  If true, he will become teammates with Zarek Valentin.

Greg Seltzer caught up with Helsingborgs IF goalkeeper Matt Pyzdrowski.

Galway United forward Jake Keegan was on Goal’s League of Ireland GoalMouth podcast last week.  He also spoke to Brian Sciaretta.

AZ Alkmaar have brought on Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane as an advisor.  I think I read the word “moneyball” in every tweet yesterday mentioning this news.

Here is a story from last week on Marc Pelosi and his return to the field over the last year.

Andrew Sousa and Ryan Maduro were both in Iceland last season with Fylkir and now both are returning to the US with the Rhode Island Oceaneers.

According to Will Parchman, US U-17 winger McKinzie Gaines is headed to Germany to trial with Wolfsburg.

And finally, FIFA announced the stadiums that will be used at the 2016 Olympics and somehow Arena da Amazônia in Manaus made the cut as one of the seven stadiums.  I still remember drinking two full glasses of water while just walking to my seat in the upper deck.  It was such a furnace.  I did snap this nice photo.
