Thursday morning linkage
July 18, 2013 (12:02 AM) by Matt Benson

Jurgen Klinsmann decided to use all four of his post-group stage roster swaps for the Gold Cup.  Looks like he wants to solidify that back with Matt Besler and Omar Gonzalez.  Ticket sales have increased to 43,000 for Sunday’s doubleheader according to Steven Goff.

Jon Arnold wrote another good interview for the site.  It was with Tony Taylor and talks about his move to Cyprus and playing in Europa League.  You should go read it so Jon will do more of these for the site.  Everyone wins!

The German Regionalliga has already started up and Julian Green scored two goals in a 4-2 win on Wednesday.  And someone decided to create a video of his preseason goals with Bayern Munich’s first team.

Diego Chavarri scored in his Iranian debut with Gostaresh Foolad on Wednesday.  And here is an interview that he did with Marca about being an American playing in Iran.

As I posted yesterday, Sebastian Lletget played well in West Ham’s friendly this week.  And here are some video highlights from the game.  He has one shot at the 4:40 mark and shows off some fancy footwork around the 5:50 mark.

I don’t think I posted this last week, but Danny Williams scored a goal in Reading’s friendly against Jon-Paul Pittman and Wycombe Wanderers.  Here is a photo of Williams from the game.

Tim Ream started at left back for Bolton in a preseason friendly against Rotherham United on Tuesday.

Who needs Jozy Altidore when you have Aron Johannsson?  Johannsson scored two goals and recorded an assist in AZ Alkmaar’s 3-0 win in a friendly against MVV.

Timothy Chandler is back from his knee injury and went 90 minutes in Nurnberg’s 3-0 loss to Borussia Monchengladbach in a friendly.

Here is a photo of Brad Friedel sporting Tottenham’s new goalkeeper kit from a recent friendly.

Geoff Cameron wants to impress new manager Mark Hughes.

Tyler Ruthven left the club recently and now goalkeeper Bryan Meredith has left Brage and is currently training with the Seattle Sounders.

Cody Cropper is starting the season with Southampton’s U-21 team.

The Charles Renken and Aubrey Perry traveling summer trial/training party is back at Nyköping.

Former US U-20er Victor Garza is on trial with Turkish club Samsunspor.

And Conor Doyle and Derby County have new away kits for this upcoming season.

Random Tuesday linkage
July 2, 2013 (12:01 AM) by Matt Benson

The USMNT Gold Cup squad started up training yesterday in San Diego.  Josh Gatt left his game at Molde FK this weekend with a knee injury, but still no news to report on how bad (or good?) it is as they wait for the MRI results.  Cory Ashe is also day-to-day with a thigh contusion.

Here is a Google-translated article about Jurgen Klinsmann wanting Bobby Wood for the Gold Cup, but 1860 Munich persuaded that it was in his best interest to stay in Europe for preseason training.

As for another Wood(s), USMNT goalkeeper coach Chris Woods was officially named the goalkeeper coach at Manchester United.  Woods was the goalkeeper coach under David Moyes at Everton, and as for the good news, will get to continue coaching with the USMNT (although he won’t be with the team at the Gold Cup).

Jozy Altidore sat down with Grant Wahl recently for this video interview.  Greg Seltzer has some Jozy transfer goodies here and here.  He also has some more stuff on Alejandro Bedoya and Joe Gyau.  And he lets us know that US youth forward Rubio Rubin will sign a deal with FC Utrecht next spring once he turns 18.

Will Packwood is jogging for the first time since his nasty leg injury (and surgeries).  Good to hear.

Timothy Chandler has returned from his knee injury and started a preseason friendly for Nurnberg over the weekend.

As for some more preseason friendly stuff from the weekend, Alfredo Morales started for FC Ingolstadt in a friendly against Maccabi Tel Aviv.  And Julian Green had a hat trick on Saturday in Pep Guardiola’s first game with Bayern Munich, a 15-1 win over some fan club.  Then followed that up with a hat trick on Sunday in another friendly with Bayern Munich’s senior team against another amateur team.  In my opinion, there is a good chance the 18-year-old could be playing with Bayern’s U-23 team this upcoming season.  He scored 10 goals in 28 league games with their U-19 team last season.

Fabian Hurzeler is training with Hoffenheim’s senior team to start out the preseason.

It looks like Borussia Mönchengladbach could be interested in signing US U-20er Mario Rodriguez to their youth team.

Here is a video interview with Aubrey Perry and Charles Renken about their trial at Nyköpings BIS in Sweden.

And finally, OT reader/frequent commenter Daniil let us know that 15-year-old Elbert Green of the Pacific Soccer Academy is down in Honduras training with Olimpia.  Green was born in San Jose, California.

We’re talking Gold Cup roster (and other links)
June 26, 2013 (12:02 AM) by Matt Benson

It looks like the final Gold Cup roster will be released on Thursday.  That said, some players are already being leaked out, including Jose Francisco Torres, Landon Donovan and Jack McInerney.  I was also asked to pick my own 23-man roster for another site and that should be up on their site on Thursday (I will link it once it becomes available).

One player that could be on that roster on Thursday is Alejandro Bedoya.  I posted his goal from this weekend earlier this week.  With that goal, he now has five goals and four assists in league play, becoming one of three Allsvenskan players with five or more goals and four or more assists on the season (also Mattias Lindström of Helsingborg and Gunnar Heidar Thorvaldsson of Norrköping).

As for some other goals this past weekend, Charlie Davies scored a goal in a preseason friendly against Vejle.  In the Swedish Division 1 (3rd tier), Ryan Gracia scored for Nyköping while Andrew Stadler scored for Sandviken.  You can keep track of all the goals scored with our goal tracker.

Stadler and Sandviken also won their Round 1 game of the 2013-14 Svenska Cupen yesterday.  As for Ryan Gracia and Nyköping, they will be welcoming Americans Aubrey Perry and Charles Renken on a trial.

Tony Taylor passed his medical, so he is officially now with AC Omonia in Cyprus.  As I posted earlier this week, AC Omonia will be playing in Europa League this upcoming season.

Andrew Wooten is back with Kaiserslautern for the preseason.  In a fun game against fans, The Wooten Clan scored three times in a 12-0 victory.  Then in a friendly against an actual team (FK Pirmasens), Wooten scored once and had an assist in a 7-1 win.

We have some new kits to check out in Germany.  Here is Steve Cherundolo sporting Hannover 96’s new home kit.  You can also see their away jersey here.  And Michael Parkhurst will be wearing these at Augsburg in 2013-14.

Alex Labidou caught up with Brad Friedel recently.  Friedel claims he is going to play until his body says he can’t.

Going from one old goalkeeper to a really young goalkeeper, Steven Goff has a story up on Arie Ammann, who signed with Watford’s youth academy earlier this month.

Goff also talked to Oguchi Onyewu this past weekend.  Gooch is looking at other options as he doesn’t think he will end up back at Malaga.

And finally, Brian Sciaretta talked to Jose Villarreal before tomorrow’s U-20 game against Ghana.  The US likely needs to win to make it out of the group stage.

Players returning to training links
March 12, 2013 (12:01 AM) by Matt Benson

Jurgen Klinsmann took over US Soccer’s twitter account yesterday and while he didn’t answer any of Howie’s questions, he did give us some good news on Clint Dempsey, Fabian Johnson and Steve Cherundolo.

And while it has been mentioned before, Bruce Arena gave an update on Landon Donovan and he should return to the Galaxy the last week in March.

Costa Rica released their roster for the qualifiers.  Good news for USMNT fans, and most Red Bulls fans can confirm this, Roy Miller made their roster.  Also, I just noticed tonight that the US is winless in its last five games (3L, 2D) against Costa Rica and haven’t won a game since a qualifier in 2005.

The US U-20 team will be playing in the Toulon Tournament in late May/early June.

One of those players, Juan Ocegueda, is still going to play for Chivas Guadalajara despite playing for the US.  Chivas have a policy of “Mexican only” players, but they are apparently going to look the other way with Ocegueda.

It looks like Villyan Bijev finally got his work permit and made Liverpool’s U-21 bench this past weekend.

Conor O’Brien got the start and went he full 90 minutes in Nordsjaelland’s 1-1 draw to FC Midtjylland yesterday.

I haven’t heard Charles Renken’s name since he returned to the US last year, but he and fellow American Aubrey Perry are in Sweden on trial at Umeå FC at the moment.

And finally, Etchu Tabe has returned to Finland with KuPS again.
